I'm making a working chute for my sheep out of pallets. This working chute should be fine for any kind of small livestock... like sheep or goats.
Using pallets for this project is a great way to recycle... and save money. Let me take you through the process.
A Pallet Working Chute ... Check it out !

Great job! Pallets are readily available in my area for free. You will even quite often see a pile of those things next to the side of the road with a "free" sign next to them. Also, many industries that I frequent will have loads of pallets in the dumpster just waiting to be loaded into your truck. Some local companies will even buy used pallets if they are the right size.

I am very surprised that your friend just gave you free pallets. They look brand new, and I know for a fact they aren't cheap. Your ideal for a chute is a good one. Take care.

First, you need to tell people what Wolmanized wood is. It's not in the dictionary, and I did find the answer, but I bet most don't know about it. Now, the chute. It's fantastic! You did a really great job too. I like it! Bless, Sheila

Just a thought. You should leave the 2x4s in were you have the upper supports and just remove the rest on the side your going to work the animal's. Awsome job and now I have ANOTHER pallet prodject idea :) :)

Love this idea, Instead of cutting one side down, since my goats are so athletic, I will just add a raised platform to the outside where I will be working from.

Goats may be a little more rambunctious than sheep. Not sure if they would be more tempted to jump out or not.

I probably wouldn't cut down the whole side. I would just cut down a working pocket. That way you could move them into the pocket to work them and the rest of the chute would be more secure.

At first I thought the chute was for loading/unloading your livestock before you mentioned "working them", health maintenance and ID I guess. (a trailer with ramp wouldn't really require a chute but who knows) I think in a previous video from last year you were cleaning their hooves (trimming nail cutting) and used a lawn chair contraption to immobilize them and from that you could do all you'd need to have done (including ear tags). Moving them individually from a holding pen to where they'd be handled, and then to either another pen or exit area when you were done. Not sure but I was thinking that process (hooves) should be done twice a year. I'll be curious to see the chute in action, how it's used.

+Atoyota The chair worked great... but I have to wrestle them into it. I'm going to see if I can do everything that's needed to them in the chute. I know a guy that has 400+ sheep (i got my new ram from him) and he never trims feet. I will check them to see if I need to, but I might be lucky and not have to do it very often. If I do... I'll use the chair ... (by the way, I went ahead and bought the Deck Chair from Premier1 Supply... It's a LOT heavier duty than the one I made).

I would not cut the top off because the sheep will jump over it. Here on the really big sheep farms they put a platform for the workers to stand on and reach over. It works good.
@BIGALTX

+ChileExpatFamily Probably a good idea. Only one of my sheep has ever been in a chute before (the new ram). That's the way the guy I got him from work his sheep (he has around 400 head). I think I'll try it a time or 2 before I decide to chop it off... Once they figure out I'm not going to hurt them in the chute, they might not try to jump out.

+TexasPrepper2 we have a 1,000 acre farm next door that milks their sheep and sell premium cheeses. The have a captured market because so many people have lactose intolerance and you don't have this problem with sheep milk. They have 250 sheep. Me i have 9 and that is 5 too many. I'm going to put one on the grill in two weeks and gift on to the boys high school for December, and then kill the rest in January. They just eat too much grass. But they are perfect replacements for a lawnmower.

used motor oil will seal the wood and make them last for years. water proof and prevents insect damage. I've used in on our goat pens and works great even on particleboard. I haven't had any problems with goats chewing on the wood either.

Yep... I've been meaning to do that. Do you mix with diesel? Been thinking about mixing with diesel half and half so I could spray in a pump up sprayer.
@bigwooly8014
@bigwooly8014 7 жыл бұрын
Haven't tried mixing it. I just mop it on with an old paint brush. I like the idea of spraying it though, might try that next time. Either way, it's held up well so far here in the hillcountry, just north of Kerrville.

I built a shed with these plans from Ryan [ Details Here?> *WoodBlueprints. Com* ] . The instructions were clear and easy to implement. Even a novice can be able to build fast using this plan. I'm happy I bought the plan. It also saved me much cost.

People have been profiting from raising sheep for thousands of years. Yes, I made money from my sheep, but I had so few that the money was not very great. To make a "living" from sheep, you'd need hundreds, I would think. I haven't really stopped to figure it out, but I would think in the U.S. a person could make around $200 to $300 per year from each sheep. Hope that helps,
