This vid is 11 years old and I have a mallet as I made that one, I have a clamp rack as I followed yours. This channel is the best woodworking channel as Steve shows how to make things, not hey! see what I made? Your channel made woodworking achievable, not out of reach. I'm going back to all your vigs on building. Thank you for all your work

I had planed on buying a heavy beach mallet from woodcraft until i saw this video, i really like the idea of this type of mallet and I wish I had found your video series a long time ago. Your projects are simple but very nice looking and you are not pretentious like a lot of the "fine" woodworkers. You are down to earth and I like that. You have really gotten me excited for some projects. Thank you for doing what you do.

I watched this video years ago. Recently I bought a bunch of new tools (axes, mattocks, chisels, etc) to give to my nephew and spent the day sharpening them all. There was just a ton of metal on the ground so I picked it up with a magnet and I've been sacing a small collection of metal powder wondering what the heck I could possibly use them for. Just now I remembered watching this video and remember that Steve weighted the head of his wooden mallets with metal. I never made a mallet before and so now I'm thinking I finally figured out a good use for all this! Thank you Steve, I'm excited to put your techniques to use.

Want to see dumb? Search "spats bear table saw". I found it while looking up info on craftsman table saws and the poor information and practice by those two donkeys is only outdone by their sheer arrogance. Shockingly, they've disabled comments.

I like how the head is made with the sand or lead shot. That's basically how a plastic dead blow mallet works. It probably has very little bounce when you strike something and imparts almost all its force into the object. Very nice. Thanks for providing the video.

I've busted or wore out 2 mallets made like that. years ago I bought one of those carvers mallets that has the round tapering head with the axis in line with the handle. The whole head is made of a solid rubber-like material that's tough, heavy and it gives a bit when you hit something. I've bashed that thing as hard as the others and it looks nearly new. They cost about $25 and are totally worth it, you'll never need to buy another one.

I work as a mechanic, any place that has tires nearby has lead wheel weights laying around. A lot of guys at work melt them into free fishing weights, and then we scrap the rest when it piles up. It's not the cleanest, they are usually adhesive backed, or have a steel insert, but you can get them for free likely.

The purpose of the BB’s is not only for weight but they give the mallet a “Dead blow” effect. When striking, the lead bb’s continue to move forward and give a bit more power to the strike as well as keeping the mallet from bouncing.

Great plan and how-to, WWMM! I'm a newer subscriber but found this 'classic' video! I couldn't rummage up a sufficient "heft" of lead fishing weights, so I piled in a stack of 1 1/2" washers, with a few daubs of epoxy between and around.. (also considered a stack of our Canadian dollar coin Loonies, but I'll save it for my 2.0 version down the line!). Thanks for these oldies, and all the new videos, too! Stay safe.

I've build several of these mallets in different sizes - I use lead #7 shot used for reloading shotgun shells. If you don't fill the cavity completely, the lead will "shift" when you strike giving the same effect as a dead-blow hammer.... and you're right, they are very, very useful in the wood shop :)

Well, it depends on where you live. Most craft stores (Hobby Lobby, Micheal's, Jo-Anne's, etc.) carry leather crafts. Look for the thickest and toughest stuff, and it should work. You might be able to order some online if you need too.

You can get as much lead as you want at the stop light at the end of any highway exit ramp. I'm talking about tire weights. I guess allot of people go down the ramp faster then they realize and then brake hard at the light, thus dislodging the tire weights.

Also another cheap idea for adding some weight to this hammer is going to a gun range and picking up the spend bullets in the berms. Heck most times they are just laying on the surface. I am a member of a gun club and I go either early in the morning or just before sundown and pick up all the free lead. I checked and I am allowed to. :)

There is another series of vids about making mallets by a user named Askwoodman. It is pretty good, but you need a lathe, and overall it is just more technically complicated. They come out very, very nice though. I like yours too because of the simpler wedging technique and the lead fill. You can get lead shot pretty cheap from midway.com, but not in very small batches.

I was going to try some off cut lead roof flashing curled into a spiral and sand as a packer to stop it rattling too much if it's loose. Though I could maybe get away with just the flashing if I cut it to the right length, just depends on what's in the scraps bin!
