Jenny Doan demonstrates how to make a gorgeous new version of the traditional Irish Chain quilt using 10 inch squares of precut fabric. For this project, Jenny chose Rue 1800 Layer Cake
by 3 Sisters for Moda Fabrics. This pattern is perfect for showing off favorite prints because the 10 inch squares are left whole! The chains that criss crosses the quilt are made quick and easy with strip sets.

Angela, I too lost a son, but it was further back in 1993. Quilting has helped me a great deal also. Making something beautiful and then giving it away brings a lot of cheer to someone else and you as well. It's very helpful in the healing process. God bless you many times over.

Well that does it! I've been drooling over the Rue 1800 for a while and now I just *have* to buy it. I sit here watching you, answering all your questions as if you can hear me, agreeing, oohing and ahhing, guessing what you'll do next. You got me so excited to make a quilt that I bought a sewing machine 2 or 3 years ago and now I'm going to *have* to open the darned thing! Threading that thing will be a nightmare and the bobbins OHHH the bobbins!! See what you've done, Jenny? Another beautiful quilt with beautiful fabric and now I have to chant "I think I can, I think I can...."

Instead of using the entire layer cake, use half of it and make two quilts! That way you won’t have a huge king size but two smaller ones and you can enjoy one and spread the joy by giving the other one away.

•💟• Be sure to follow the pattern exactly. In this video, Jenny accidentally misspoke a couple of times. These videos are a great joy & blessing for all of us, but please follow the pattern before you cut your fabrics. It's just s bit of a tongue twister. At 3:06 she says, 2-1/2" but the red squares are from 2" strips & subcut into 2" strips. At 6:20, she says 7" white, but they're 7-1/2" wide (long) x 2" (wide) strips, that finish at 7" x1-1/2". Thank you for your delightful videos & all of your work Jenny. Again, not to be critical or hurt feelings, just asking quilters to follow the directions & think it through as well. •💟•

I think the 7” strips are correct. 7+2+2=11. 11-1 (2qty 1/2” dbl seam allowances) =10” Remember, The finished block is not actually “finished size“, because the outer raw edges have not been sewn into a seam yet and they must also match the unfinished 10”square. Hope that makes sense.

Jenny, I made these quilt blocks using the red and white, but for my 10” squares I used Pioneer Woman’s Sweet Rose fabric. I love the bright colors of her fabric. Anyway, when I put the blocks together it was just too busy. Your layer cakes are so muted, they were just perfect, but The floral on my fabric, just jumped out at you and the red chain didn’t. I decided to put another row of what I call the logs around the chain blocks. Had to add some white logs to the floral also, but it worked great. It’s just so gorgeous. Thank you so much for this video.
