I mean, going offscale works pretty well if you know what you are doing, so the notes can end up on the darker places.

Chromatic movements can bring a lot of life and flavour to your mix. That said, definitely learn your basic scales and chords, just don't limit yourself if you find a sharpened 5th or flat 4 expressing more what you want to hear.

I almost left a backhanded comment along the lines of "It's almost like staying in key works better" but then I remember that I started learning FL a week ago after being a trained musician for over a decade (and using MuseScore since it's familiar in terms of layout and being notation based) and still don't know what all them fancy buttons are up top and didn't know i could actually highlight scales/keys and have been doing it all by ear

This is the best video I have ever seen, never knew about this before, and I was litterally amazed at how I thought the darker notes were just dark because the keys were black, and realized that it was on c major by default.

Music theory is damm complicated
@DavM3106 ай бұрын
Music theory trivializes asinine videos like this. Literally everything in this video is a roundabout and overly complicated way to do the same things you can do instinctively after literally an hour of basic reading about scales and chords. Literally all you have to do to do everything done in this video is learn the major scale and basic triad construction, and you don't have to memorize anything else. Not to mention that one of the first things he says is "never use the dark notes" which is idiotic because music is rarely ever strictly diatonic. Music theory is infinitely less complicated than this shit, which does nothing but limit your creativity
@Beatstockpile1276 ай бұрын
@@borborleetunes Basic theory is very simple. Trying to remember all these tips and tricks is harder than learning basic theory.
@gaopinghu733211 ай бұрын
And they say that it's music theory that limits your creativity... Yes, for a beginner adventuring through all 12 keys at the same time is hard, but advising to NEVER do it is straight up bad advice.

Circle of fifths. Sometimes it does sound off and its called "dissonance". U can use it sometimes
@motokeci5 ай бұрын
Bro if you’re in Natural minor chord scale, check other minor scales for same note and then use the dark notes of your main minor scale For example i always write my melodies in D minor and when i do it; A Major chord is not fitting the scale but some how it sounds so good, when i check the arabian minor scale; i see that one dark note fits the scale in arabian notes You can convert this trough other scales, compare 2 different minor scales of same note and find the uncommon notes, they’ll work

Best advice. Learn music theory, Ear train and learn the number system. That's the real sauce. All this other method stuff is for the worms

And then I make a track, show it to people and have them say "wtf is this chord progression? this doesn't work at all" I'm not fully tone deaf (maybe I just need ear training and to learn an instrument) but I don't really have a feel for writing progressions.
