Having a clean kitchen when I go downstairs to sit at my kitchen table to drink my coffee and start my day is the BEST feeling! No matter how tired I am, I make sure my kitchen is clean before I head upstairs to bed. That is a good habit to have.

A while ago, seriously like 2-3 years ago, you said something about surface clutter, and it was a lightbulb moment. I've got 2 toddlers now and just moved, and some days I don't have much left to give to a full clean, but I always get the surfaces. It helps so much! And most of the time, just cleaning off one small surface will be the forward motion I need to get more done.

Thanks for the video. I am a grandma. I used to wash clothes like you showed in your video when our kids were young. I have changed the way I wash clothes. Wash Likes with Likes works best. The fabric type is important. The color is important. Your whites should look white, not gray. Clothes look better and last longer washing Likes with Likes. Also, wash microfiber anything with other microfiber. Wash cotton sheets with cotton sheets.

Thanks so much for reminding me about the law of motion! I have been ill for several weeks and the combined effects of being exhausted after a long viral illness, a new onset of a heart condition, effects of chronic illnesses, and side effects of a new medication have had me on the couch for weeks now. But you reminded me that once I make the big effort of dragging myself upright, I can stay that way, even if only for 15 minutes. In that time I took down the old laundry and started a new load, put the dishes in to soak so I can wash them easily later, then tidied the living room before I had to hit the couch again. If I do this once an hour I am confident that I can get my home back to some semblance of pre-illness normalcy. This really cheered me up too!

I can empathize, I’m not a spring chicken anymore and trying to downsize is overwhelming, with some knee limitations due to aging and ongoing viral load from covid vaccinations. Dealing with the hand I was dealt. 😉 The good news is my cat doesn’t expect perfection as long as her crunchies, Sheba and water are replenished and the litter box is attended to 😹. Just don’t want to leave a mess for my kid when I go, like my mom did to us, and that propels me to keep at it… even a couple of hours a day keeps the entropy away…

You know I was just thinking about you. I don't usually follow KZfaqrs but you are one of the few I always love listening to. I've always been easily tired even before I had kids. Now with kids I'm running on empty. But everything you've said has helped. The 10 min rule when I can only muster up very little energy. A body in motion stays in motion. That's a big one. If I just get started, I end up having more energy than if I'm just sitting around. End up accomplishing so much more. There are so many other examples but all I can say is you've really helped me figure out how to survive with kids. I'm slowly but surely decluttering and organizing my home. Wishing you all the best with your the new baby!

I have Autism and ADHD and I have to say these hacks are really helpful for people like me. For example, keeping cleaning supplies in bathrooms. If I leave the room to go get my cleaning supplies I WILL GET DISTRACTED and forget what I was doing in the first place! I personally solved my clutter issue with bookshelves. I have book shelves everywhere, mainly to display books, figurines exc so that they aren't on counters or on the floor. Another nice hack was the laundry separation, but I go a step further and give everyone but the kids two baskets. One for tops and one for bottoms and put them where I tend to get undressed. I absolutely hate having to sort and it's the hardest part of laundry(at least for me) I also have a shower cleaner with an attachable hose. After my shower I simply spray down my tub, let it sit while I dry my hair, come back and use the hottest setting with my shower head on high pressure to remove any debris. No more scrubbing for me! Two minutes and BAM! I'm done.

Making sure there are no dirty dishes in the sink really does work! Another idea along the same lines is the idea of "closing the kitchen" or "putting the kitchen to bed" so to speak. I've heard many speak of this idea/strategy, and I'm almost positive Kallie has, too. It kinda makes sense if you're going to take care of the sink that you may as well finish the job and clean the rest of the kitchen as well. As one who has worked multiple restaurant jobs (ah, the college days!), there's nothing like a clean kitchen with everything put back into place at the end of the night. This would also be when you would run the dishwasher, too, BTW. The advantage of doing this is that you wake up to a clean kitchen and clean dishes! I like to leave the dishwasher door open overnight so they can fully dry, too; the "towel in the door trick" never worked for me, and I prefer not to pay for a heated dry cycle--especially in the summer...in the South. We have enough heat to deal with, and I don't need another reason to run the A/C more, LOL! That said, another idea Kallie has suggested over the years is habit-stacking. In this situation, if I take care of dishes/kitchen at night that means I can start laundry first thing in the morning. So, I'll start a load while I am making breakfast.(Often, I already have the laundry in the washer the night before and only need to add the detergent/oxi-clean/ect.--no decisions to be made that early, LOL!) My clothes washer hooks up to my kitchen sink, so staggering in this way actually works better and is necessary as both machines can't run at the same time. Making a hobit for one at night and one in the morning takes the guess work out of it, you know? I'm not saying others need to do this, but find where you can make things easier for yourself. It might be because of a conflict of using two appliances like mine...a "problem becomes a solution." You may be surprised! 💜

Another awesome and helpful video! One of my absolute favorite tips from you, (from one of your past videos) is starting a new habit by attaching it to an existing habit! For me it's emptying my dishwasher while making my coffee every morning. Since I combine one pod into one large cup setting and one small cup setting into my big mug, I can usually get the dishwasher empty before my mug is full. I find myself starting this task on automatic and it gets my most disliked task done quickly. I've since attached other new habits to existing ones and it has changed my daily routines, Thank you so much for your great advice. Keep it coming!

All good practical advice, especially breaking down of tasks so they aren't overwhelming, and setting a timer so you're just thinking about the time. Not only do these tips help you feel better mentally, but they help as you get older. We've been in our house for 25 years. Doing a little at a time is easier on your body, especially as you age, and if you're not a fan of cleaning, the timer makes it bearable, but it also keeps it "doable" as you age. Just some points from an old timer. 👵

I agree definitely taking the extra 10 minutes to do the dishes and wipe the kitchen makes a great difference. Having cleaning items in the bathroom is a game changer. I have also a separate shelf or drawer for each person in the bathroom for the individual products toothbrushes and such that eliminates cleaning as well as everyone responsible for their own laundry. So much less stressful for Mom.

I also believe in folding and if needed iron all clothes to take care of them and not look like we slept in our clothes. It's important to teach children to care for their things including clothing.

I do the timer mind game for the kitchen too, it works well. Your dishwasher and washing machine have a filter that needs to be cleaned. I pull my dishwasher one the first of the month and use a bit of Dawn Powerwash and a toothbrush to clean it. Then I run a dishwasher cleaner tablet (from Amazon) without any dishes in it. We pull our washing machine filter about 2x a year.

We were told by a GE repairman to put the pod in the bottom of the dishwasher because the little soap dispenser is made for liquid or powder soap, not pods. So he actually said putting it at the bottom of the basin lets the soap give your dishes a better clean. Maybe it depends on the dishwasher but it solved our problem of pods not dissolving completely and leaving a lot of residue on our dishes

We just catch the not-hot-enough water in another container and use it as needed. Between the water filter pitcher, teapot, sports bottles, and watering can for plants, there's always something handy. That way, the hot water is available for the dishwasher and the plant water has time to sit to let the chlorine off-gas on out.

I have a lot of whites for the summer. I’ve taken your advice about the timer. Works great. Sometimes I go back and reset it so I can finish my task. Also use wipes to hit the sink with a swipe or 2. Long ago I started using the disposable toilet bowl cleaner. Take the wand, stick it onto the little nob on top of the cleaner pad and go for it. I don’t have to touch the wand to remove the cleaner pad. Still Struggling a bit with the shower. I have a pretty bad back so it’s tough for me. I’m getting there. Biggest problem is that I’m living with my kids. When my husband died my son told me I could stay with them. Unfortunately the room has no closet and no window. But I’m working on it! LOVE MY BISSELL CROSSWAVE! But I am opposite on cleaning supplies and cleaning gadgets. I love new cleaning gadgets! Anything to make cleaning easier! I also like different cleaner for different areas, I couldn't do the vinegar at all 🤢 I have tried it and I don't like the smell, even though it does go away. But mostly I hate the smell on my hands! I am like that even with good smelling cleaners, I wear disposable rubber gloves as I clean! This was a game changer for me! I hated that my hands felt dirty after I clean, even after washing them. (Neurodivergent) 🤣 But they are especially helpful in the bathrooms, and kitchen, where we use the more harsh chemicals. But I'll put them on to load my dishwasher, and lightly clean my kitchen, then go into the living room/computer room, touch up bedrooms, and lastly I will clean the bathrooms. That way there I am not getting my hands dirty or wasting gloves, since I need to have them due to my aversions. Once I figured that out, I was cleaning everything that I previously ignored. Like the stove in the air fryer, because I don't like the feel of grease on my hands either. And no matter what I cannot stand the feel microfiber cloths!!!! 🤢 (Sensory issues) So that brings me to my next point... So if there are any 'Neurodivergent' people coming to check out this video, which chances are there are many! If you suffer from sensory issues as well, buy gloves!!! ❤️ We struggle more then others mostly due to executive dysfunction. So we come here to help us manage it, and gain skills to be more organized and "get that get up and go" attitude! And hopefully learn some mind tricks as well as cleaning tricks, while we are most likely staring at a task that seems impossible, so we sit in our messy homes while watching this video and others like it. 😂 Being Neurodivergent can manifest as difficulty planning, starting or completing tasks, keeping organized among many other issues that have to do with maintaining a clean, clutter free home. There are so many of us that are also struggling 😢 I am in no way trying to be rude or offend anybody, like I said I am neurodivergent as well. I just wanted to give tip for those of us with sensory issues, and make a light-hearted joke, and to let others know, you're not alone in this daily cycle ❤ PLEASE SHARE IN THE REPLIES IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER TIPS THAT MAY HELP OTHERS! I wish I had more, but wearing gloves for sensory issues is all I have 😅 Oh and get yourself a Crosswave! The second generation vacuum works great! I have both the first and the second, I much prefer the 2nd. My only gripe with it is, the charging. Sometimes it takes me a little longer because I fixate on my floor, so I will have to recharge it. It's not a charging issue, it's more of a me issue 😁

I have followed you for a couple of years now, and you are simply the BEST in so many ways. Watching your videos not only gives me inspiration and motivation for whatever topic you choose to discuss, but also jump-starts me on all kinds of other, totally unrelated, activities. I started my day with you extra early today because I have a research paper I am writing, and the organization required to be productive at that task is- for me- identical to the organizational tools you use in your everyday life (which I love, by the way- what a terrific Mom, friend and family member you must be to everyone fortunate enough to know you personally). Thank you!

pretty great accommodations to help with keeping a clean environment when you have adhd. using pomadoro timers to get started. keeping items at point of performance. not eating the frog first and instead starting with easier, visibly noticeable tasks so you get a dopamine hit which helps give you momentum from being in motion and satisfaction from a visibly noticeable task completion. habits/routines to help not have to remember to do things or try to decide where to start. streamlining tasks by using tools optimally and starting tasks while keeping in mind making the entire process easier on you. i also don’t let my clothes sit in the dryer long enough to cool down so i can shake out any wrinkles and fold while still warm so i don’t have to iron things. working on my routine is my current thingy. fingers crossed 🤞

@@ceballard1215 he's one of my favorite KZfaqrs. Both for his practical advice and for the deep dives into the tech that makes up today. His looks into midcentury RCA and Sony's beta systems are so good. I completely changed how I wash my dishes after watching his first video on dishwashers. It also made me feel less bad about only buying powder. I feel like we save so much money on just getting powder.

Like Kallie, I live in CT. When we get these humid weeks (maybe 4-6/year), lots of us say "I could NEVER live in the south..." Then again, zero degree wind chill days are the other end of the spectrum. Two entirely different wardrobes - shorts, sandals, snow boots, mittens - multiple that by 4 kids! 😲

I love your videos! But I especially loved this one. So much collective wisdom we women have to share with one another! I particularly appreciated your comments about overcoming inertia, tackling clutter as an easy way to ‘clean’ and have a sense of accomplishment, and setting the mood-really to do any task whether it is cleaning, making a meal, doing an organizing task: it helps to set aside the time, gather the needed tools/supplies, prepare the space.

I noticed on my washer since it's an energy efficient model sometimes not all the items got wet or sufficiently washed if it was a bigger load like a ruggable or towels. So I noticed there was a deep wash setting so basically I could fill the machine with more water and get a better clean.

I have noticed this too, especially since my machine is a top load style. I don't think it would be as much of an issue if my machine was a front loader

I have a top loader washer. I have to add water to it to cover the clothes. Have to do the same for the rinses. Energy efficient??? Luckily I have a tub in the garage, but it still takes time and I have to keep up on the timing. Everything is digital now and you can't change anything!

I just put a paper towel standing upright under my bathroom sinks. And a spray bathroom cleaner is so much better in cleaning than those bathroom wipes. They are way too small.

here is what I do in reference to the wipes not being eco. I keep paper towels, the trifold kind in the bathroom for drying hands. Mostly for guests as I do also have a clean hand towel daily. I also keep cheap dollar store box of tissues. Add in foaming hand soap for washing hands ! Add it all together and you have wipes to use. Tissue can be for very small not too wet things and Paper for slightly bigger jobs. This way you don’t need the pre-bought buckets of wipes and the stuff you have is playing double duty.. Eco from the sense that these are paper products and also not just one use. because again they can be used in different ways.
