Donald O'Connor was my favorite entertainer, a great dancer, a great comic actor, with a beautiful singing voice.

Apparently Donald O'Connor had to take a few days off after this scene to physically recover from this. Thanks for covering this. This is one of the greatest bits from what's considered the greatest movie musical of all time. I highly recommend seeing the entire thing if you haven't yet -- and seeing it again if you have.

Donald O'Connor is one of the greats. In my opinion he out performed Gene Kelly in this movie. For those who haven't seen the movie "Singing in the rain" yet, they should definitely go see it.

And in "Walking my Baby back home" he and Janet Leigh have some dancing numbers at least as good as in Singin in the Rain, maybe better-

Donald O'Connor was a great entertainer but underrated. At this time of his life... He was four pack a day smoker. Myth was aftering filming this he needed bed rest for a week plus had to redo walking the walls because film developer ruined that footage.

That's dedication for ya. I heard the whole scene had to be redone

Great reaction. Donald O’Connor was hospitalised due to exhaustion after filming this sequence. He smoked 4 packs a day.

I counted only 9 cuts since he sat down at the piano.

Hi Inika Chung! You are such a "Holiday" of Joy to watch! You also have a beautiful singing voice; I just love listening to you and how you put such a unique twist on reviewing old film stars and dancers! I love watching your reviews, but, mostly, I love listening to you. Could you sing a little more in your reviews? Great! Chow Bono!

The music for this song was stolen note for note from Cole Porter's BE A CLOWN. Cole Porter laughed it off and the song writers Brown & Freed later apologized and said it was a simple mistake. But I don't understand how you could steal the entire melody by mistake.

The meter and pattern of the two songs are the same. It would seem to have been intentional and the source of irritation for Cole Porter. The two melodies, however, are different, not note for note identical.

Interestingly, Gene Kelly did “Be A Clown,” Yes, the same song, with The Nicholas Brothers in a period musical with Judy Garland. Can’t remember the title. He had to know it was the same song. But, that’s old Hollywood.

@@DeeVet1 Stanley Donen was the film director. He felt he needed a solo number for Donald O'Conner. He told Brown & Freed to write a "Be a Clown" type song. Donen supposedly said when "Make Em Laugh" was delivered - "Jesus Christ, I said a song like "Be a Clown" not steal it."
