Using our EziDry Dehydrator, we make fruit rollups out of our plum harvest. Fruit rollups are a fruit leather that can be made with your selection of fruits and flavourings. In this video we use plums, but you can adapt this method to suit the fruits you have available, with sweeteners and even spices to your taste.
This is a great dehydrating recipe to do with the kids, as they love fruit rollups for the lunch box. Making your own fruit rollups is so simple, even the kids can get involved!

Thanks Kat. We have 3 plum trees, but only got plums off the 1 tree we netted this year. Not even a single plum off the other two trees. The birds are voracious up here.

As I shared on my video last week, homemade leathers are what started my dehydrator journey over 30 years ago. I didn’t add sugar though. The dehydrator is still going strong too. It’s a great way to deal with plum tree gluts. Certainly a lot less volume to store too. The kids love them.

That is a great dehydrator. It has really lasted the distance over the years and still works as well as when we got it. Hopefully you get some great success with rollups too with your one. Those solid trays make it a lot easier, but you can do a thicker fruit and spread on baking paper if you get stuck without them and want to give it a go. I appreciate the feedback on music. I tend to pop it in when editing and there is a bit when I haven't been chatting away but see the step is important to truly help understand what to do. But it feels kinda awkward when it just goes on with no sound going on. Love to hear how you go with your first rollups. I'm actually in the process of editing a tropical flavour to show a raw fruit rollup too. Just banana, passionfruit and banana and blended. Kids rated this one of the best I have done over the years, so looking forward to being able to share that too 😀

They were getting gobbled pretty quick here too. Thankfully the boys did a 2nd batch on the weekend, with the full 9 trays. The power usage is definitely something to consider, especially for those of you off-grid. The unit is 500w (running closer to 400w when on med), but it is a continuous draw.

Most definitely. Peach is incredible 😋 Peaches also go quite well as a raw fruit leather, sweetened with honey. The texture is a bit different though when uncooked but the honey I find helps with flexibility.

@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus
@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus 5 ай бұрын
I do this with our blackberries too. I usually leave the seeds in but they can be hard if you don't like that texture. They are very tart when dehydrated alone, so they do need sugar or honey. The amount will differ depending on the berries though. They also benefit from the sugar or honey to increase the flexibility (apple puree helps too), as they can dry crisp rather than flexible. Hope this helps 😀

Those round stackable dehydrators are not the best when using the fruit leather trays/sheets. Most of the heat goes up through the centre holes like a chimney and into your room. (OK in winter to warm the house) A proper dehydrator like the Excalibur and similar designed units with the fan at the rear will dry those roll-ups in next to no time. Even an oven with the door slightly ajar and a computer fan inside would be much better than the round tower units. The round ones are great for drying rolls of 3D printer filament and very small batches of foodstuffs. Just my 2c worth. Hooroo.

I have an Excalibur (you will see it in some of my other vids), the Ezidry I use in this vid and do solar dehydrating also (in the breadcrumband herbs vids). I tend to use either the Ezidry or Excalibur for fruit rollups. Both work pretty much the same for me, but I do like the square shape I get with the Excalibur. But I prefer the Ezidry fruit rollup trays. I don't use the solar though due to unevenness of drying across the rollup and it running into night.

@Mark1gig564 the plums we have are super tart, so doing the plum flavour just isn't really edible without sweetening to taste. But that isn't the case with all fruits we do rollups with. This Friday's upcoming video is a tropical flavour that doesn't need any extra sweetening and is great with just raw fruit too.

In the weather conditions we had at that time and with the moisture in that batch, that was the reality of what it took. A batch I did last weekend took 22hrs. And I have had less. This is why I say when dehydrating, never go exact times people say or books, because it varies with conditions and produce. This lot demonstrated that very well and I like to share things that we really experience and not always just the perfect scenario. My saying for dehydrating is always 'it is ready when it is ready'. 😀
