This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzfaq.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

It's actually only as strong as those edge welds - agreed. It's strong, but not as strong as it would be if it had been cast and machined.
@pstrap1311
@pstrap1311 7 жыл бұрын
The weakest point is the joint between the channel section and the moving jaw. All the rest is super overkill to match that but the excessively heavy construction gives it enough mass to be an effective anvil. An I beam or channel on its side would have been better but the channel is pretty frickin stiff as is. obviously a solid piece of metal would be more bomb proof, but it would literally take a bomb to damage that thing. So no, it's not an "extremely weak design". It's a good design. Dick.

Are you transferring the full clamping load using this puny bearing at 2:20 ? I doubt this will last long. Just compare the surface area your threads use to spread the load versus the small 20 contact points of the ball bearings. Way out of proportion.
@jamesolivier3192
@jamesolivier3192 7 жыл бұрын
You are correct, clamping load is transferred to those bearings, I bet when that vise is clamped tight, the force put on those bearings will be 10x+ what they are rated for, let alone any amount of flex in that jaw will transfer the load to mainly the top few balls. definite failure point.

Not to be an ass, but this is an extremely weak design, your clamping strength is severely hindered. Look at a vise that an engineer has designed. 2:30 That channel steel should be welded standing on end with another piece adjacent to it (to form a tube). You have no more clamping strength than a medium size harbor freight vise. P.S. I've broken quite a few vises, I'm well aware of where their weakness is, and it's almost always in the guide area.

Same. That channel slide is the weak link. Good fab'ing job though.

Yeah but he gets comments like "amazing" and "awesome" so that's all that matters here on KZfaq right?...this place is all about perception and not reality. lol

I was thinking the same if you go to cranking on that long handle that channel iron will bend then the jaws will never match again he should of made the slide out of 3 +3/4 plate box 3 pieces and i don't think it would bend any it was a good looking vice it gave me an idea for one anyway all the good ones are high as hell and all the cheaper ones are junk

Bad ass vise. You should sell the screw and threaded collar so us without a lathe can make a equally skookum vise.

Lake school....One easy way to get a screw and a nut with a square thread is to buy one where they sell scaffoldings. Such a huge screw is use to level each post of the scaffold. Around 35 $,,,,

Or a screw jack, typically for trailers and usually thrown away with good guts. Working on one now... though not THIS beastly by any stretch.
