I've never heard him play with anyone before. I must say, I prefer just listening to his voice and picking; the rest is just distraction. However, playing with others he has so much energy and sounds so... youthful! Thanks so much for sharing this rare recording.

For those of you thinking this was a 1970 event...sadly John died in 1966.

For information, as Jerry told me, he also played the second guitar behind John Hurt various recordings studio (album Today etc.) Unfortunately, his name was not mentioned on the LP jacket (you can check this info in the Mississippi John Hurt Bio by Philip Ratcliffe) John Hurt often played also with a fiddle player in Avalon.

I took lessons from Jerry in the 1960s. I don't believe he ever played on a John Hurt record. But he was willed John's Guild guitar which I took my lessons on.

@@laurenbroido9 - he certainly told me about playing on Hurt's records, and Stefan Wirz includes these on his discography page: www.wirz.de/music/ricks.htm

Is this from the Philly Folk Festival, early 70s? Great take--such energy!

John had passed by the early seventies. He died in 1966. I last saw him in 1964 in Toronto.
