Chatterbaits catch bass - so how do you make the perfect custom chatterbait? In this vid I show you how to build a chatterbait with just a couple tackle components from Tackle Warehouse. The D&M Custom Baits Pirahna is the first bladed swim jig I fished and it has a slightly different movement and vibration than a Z Man Evergreen or Jackhammer. If you're fishing a lake that gets a lot of blade bait pressure, this is a diy build you need to try fishing.
How to fish a chatterbait? I use a 7'2" MH Kryptonite fishing rod bit.ly/2YXZnKs and a 7:2:1 fishing reel. Depending on cover I'll fish it on 40-50lbs braided fishing line or 18lbs flourocarbon bit.ly/2YjSLXd
Want to build your own custom chatterbait? Here are the fishing lure parts we used:

I may have left this comment on another video, but I’ve been using buzzbait wire forms and cutting the wire about 3/8” from the head, attaching a blade, then bending the wire over to create the eye. The wires are stout and a lot of buzzbait wire forms have the longer hook shank you mentioned. IMO there is a better action when the blade is attached directly to the eye instead of attached with a split ring. It’s always nice to be able to pick your own skirt and blade combinations too 👍

Using a small center punch to open up the hook eye doesn't stress it as much. Just tap it on the anvil part of a vise. Learned from This Guy Skimpy. Living rubber skirts gives a different action from silicone skirts too... Thank for sharing, Great Tips & Tricks.

Mikey, if u want to throw a chatter bait in thick wood of heavy cover, this is the best design ever. Take a strike king jointed structure bug head, like the wobble head thing, attach the blade to the eye with a split ring. Next cut the ewg hook off at the eye. Then take a weightless screwlock gammy hook, and put it on the back end of the wobble head with a split ring. Pop the screw out of the hook eye, slide a skirt up onto the front right behind the wobble head, then put the spring back in. Rig up whatever craw or swimbait u have confidence in and wack em with something unique. I've fished ponds people throw chatterbaits alot and I consistently get decent bites on this guy

Dude first of all your channel RULES! second, making chatterbaits is a WAYYY better option than buying off the shelf especially if you pour from scratch like I do.

I take a dremel with a thin cutting disc and cut one single line slot down each side of the blade. It tightens up the wobble a bit but it also adds the sound of thrusting water when you rip it. Tight lines dude.

Depending on the depth of grass I’m fishing and how fast the fish want the bait, I’ll bend the blade. If the grass is high in the water column, I’ll straighten out the blade to make it rise up without having to reel faster. If I’m fishing deeper grass, I’ll put more of a backwards bend in the blade to force it downward so I don’t have to change my reeling cadence. Love the videos Mikey. I’ve learned a lot and there’s never a dull moment in your videos. Keep doing what you’re doing man and I hope to meet you one day.

I have started tweaking my chattterbaits by both painting the blades and I have found that barely bending the contours of the blades can make them both displace more water but more importantly, make the blade start vibrating immediate with reeling, even with lower and more torque orientated reels. Great video though Mike..I will check out your recommendation in this video.

The only thing I would add is to manually wiggle the blade against the head so it loosens up the action, making the vibration even more intense and reactive to your retrieve.

If you're going to change the jig itself, you can put a hardware washer on the snap in front of the blade to add extra sound & vibration.

great video, and really appreciate the time to show us about the D&M attaching the blade. Been wondering on those for a while now, and might try that one out. My waters in W.Pa are typically clearer to slightly stained, and I fish from the bank as well, and vibrating jigs are my fave, so I try taking weighted swimbait hooks with split rings and a vibrating blade to create a "naked" vibrating jig. needs to be worked a bit slower but does work... appreciate the vid man!

Ok, here is my ultimate chatterbait setup. Jackhammer with War Eagle Mouse skirt, Z man Razor Shadz Breaking Bream trailer and my secret weapon, a tiny squirt of Bang Shad every once in a while. I honestly believe the Bang makes a big difference between bumps and eats. I also catch a lot of fish just letting it sink to the bottom and waiting a couple of seconds before retrieving it. They will follow it down and crush it while it sits on the bottom. BTW, the Razor Shadz trailer will typically last 30-50 fish each. Thats it, no more, I won't talk. :-)

The majority of fishermen on my home lake use trailer hooks on spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. Sometimes it can be as simple as running a 4.25 rage swimmer or a reaction innovations skinny dipper trailer instead. They crush that thing and with these fronts coming in I know what I’m doing this afternoon. 👀 Definitely gonna make some of those chatterbaits this winter though, that’s pretty dope.

If you're using it for jigging, try tying a tiny glass or plastic bead onto the nose eyelet underneath the blade using a small length of braid so that the bead swings freely like a pendulum. At the same time, use a trailer that has a huge amount of body roll, or just rig one upside down. That bead will clatter against the head like nobody's business.

Just this. And it's not much. But I do it. I always buy them with it already on it or I add a split ring between the blade and bait. It seems to me that it lets the blade move freely. I sometimes will bend the blade a little. Also, of course now as you know I make my skirt to whatever colors I need them to be if I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. Now to the video within the video. DUDE!! Those monsters attacking right at the boat, GEEEEZZZZ! I'd love to have a day like that for sure. Great video again man. Keep'em coming. Tight Lines.

I tweak the blade with needle nose pliers to give it a slight concave blade imagine a sail full of wind that's the shape I go for makes that puppy vibrate so much you feel it in your chest I also like ribbon tail trailers the extra length of the ribbon tail and has much more action then a curly. I like to toss it out let it sink to the bottom and fish it by hopping it off the bottom you get the vibration when you lift it and that ribbon tail flutters on the fall

Do you have an issue with that bait wanting to come to the surface? I always use a standard chatterbait because Everytime I try another brand they want to come to the surface. Also I run my chatterbug skirtless always. If the bite is tough I paired mine with a small swimbait 3in it gives the bait a crazy erratic action that I feel produces bites when others won't.

I like to drill holes in the blades, experiment with different size holes, an vary locations. Also try mixing size holes, like 2 1/8 on one side and 1 1/4 on the other, it gives a more wounded wobble to the bait. Holes also can produce bubbles in the baits trail or wake.

damn. I honestly never really thought about making my own chatterbaits. it’s really a rad idea. but what I will do... is i’ll buy 2 or 3 of the same chatterbaits, either identical in size or in different sizes and i’ll bend the blades more or less on them while I keep one as “stock.” if you give the blade a little more of a bend, you’ll get a “harder” vibration. the only thing I haven’t figured out is how to get it to start instantly when I do that. if I mess with the blades, it takes a couple of cranks to get vibrating. so if I kill it, it takes a crank or two in order to get it going again. i’ll also trim my skirt up a bit. nothing crazy, i’ll take like a 1/4” off, maybe a bit more depending on my trailer. sometimes rigging swimbait trailers upside down will give you more action & water displacement as well. dope video mikey!

So you have the vibrating blade but sometimes adding an “upgraded” or over sized trailer can make a major impact. Trailer? Think like Rage Tail Lobster instead of Craw. Instead of Gambler EZ Swimmer the full on Big Ez. You get the vibration of the blade and the trailer.

So far I have only used Z man chatter baits and all I did is trim the skirt to match the trailer and then a little bit of the top to fluff it out

Honestly, I have no confidence it chatter baits. Only mod I have done is black out the blade. Good tip on dulling it out. Makes sense.

I get the z man original chatterbait in 1/2 oz or heavier and sand the bottom of the head so it's flat....that gives the bait a nice hunting action and it won't blow out when you speed up the retrieve . DONT TRY IT WITH A 3/8oz you will take too much lead off the head and the bait will not run right at a normal retrieve speed.
