Make the Ply-Split "Waves" Braid

The Waves braid is one of 28 projects in my book "How to Make Ply-Split Braids & Bands". Instructions for the Waves Braid are also available separately in PDF format. The step-by-step instructions include 4 pages of text and 8 black-and-white photos. Both are available from my website, www.lindahendrickson.com.
The Waves braid is the design that I have been teaching beginners since I started teaching ply-splitting workshops in 1999. It is from Peter Collingwood's 1998 book "The Techniques of Ply-Split Braiding", where two variations are shown in Plate 20. Peter's description of how to make the braid is on pages 77-78. The structure is single-course oblique twining (SCOT).

hi Linda..could you tell me which cord is better? i need to know because I want to make an order..which one do you use in this tutorial? 4-ply or 2-ply? 3/32" or 5/32"? I'm from Romania and I need to know which one is better before ordering...many thanks in advance...

The cords that I used for this braid are 4-ply, 3/32" diameter. I make cords 110" long, and then tape and cut them into the lengths needed for a project. For the Waves braid shown, the cords are about 27" long.

Can you find 4 pli cord already made like macrame cord or do textile companys have one

The only commercially-made cords made for ply-split braiding that I'm aware of are from this website in Japan: ginakoubou.ocnk.net/ Any plied cords that can be split can be used for ply-splitting. Macrame cord would work, but the twist is very low compared to cords made for ply-splitting, so the results would be quite soft. Danish cord works well for ply-split baskets, and is readily available from basketry supply shops and online.

How do you calculate the length of the finished product to the length of cord you need?

That is a huge challenge and generally requires quite a bit of sampling.

i know you don't ship internationally...I've read it on your site; no problem cause somebody I know in the US can send them to me..one more question..how long is the cord? is it only 100 inches?
