My favorite of yours is the Green Gummy Bear. I saw the video of you shooting that. Great! The only real value in restaurant shoots is if you are starting out is that you’ll learn how to deal with people on a face to face basis. Friend of mine did one last year. He was anxiously awaiting a callback for when they did their spring menu. Ha! They just used the same basic styling (dinnerware, placemats) and had a server snap the stuff with her cell phone. They put her cell phone pics up amongst his meticulously crafted shots. They didn’t care. The place is packed every nite and as long as this sector of clientele has some idea of what they’re getting, they don’t care either.

Hey Scott, How's it going? Now I'm finishing my photography degree here in Bogotá, Colombia, and maybe it's one of the great deceptions of my life if I compare it to other ways to learn photography. But in December of last year, I started to watch your videos, and it's helped me a lot to understand which mistakes I made. Thank you so much. Now I don't feel afraid to start working as a professional because your videos made it possible. Thanks for complimenting what a terrible university and degree made it; I really appreciate your videos. Keep doing it.

This really brought back some memories. As a young commercial photographer my associates and I did a lot of product photography for major paper manufacturers. When they came out with a new wrap for paper towels or toilet paper a semi truck would arrive at the studio and unload a couple of pallets of product. Then the product manager would arrive with a roll of the new wrap film fresh from the printer. They would spend the next couple of days going though cases of product looking for perfect rolls of product. They would then hand wrap them with the new film. While that was going on, we would set up the aisle end displays and get the stages ready for the individual product shots. Of course a case of film had been ordered to ensure all the same batch number for the emulsion. Test shots made and sent to the lab to ensure consistent processing. I imagine there is probably the same insane attention to detail today for even the most mundane products. Nothing is more mundane than toilet paper. Right? Thinking back. It was easily 3 or more days for the shoot since they wanted multiple options for the product as well as the displays. Not the most creative shoots but they paid really well.

What you say is correct. As an ad agency art director on leading and not so leading brands we always go with a real Commercial Photographer that is trusted to deliver a guaranteed style that fits the brand and investment because the financial stakes are enormous. For that service the client can pay up to 10s of thousands. Why? Because the art director/client trust the photographer's experience and knowledge to deliver the goods. Get that wrong and people start losing their jobs ... that's why we pay for consistent lighting style and sharp near-to-far depth of field (Scheimpflug Principle right) to get the hero shot.

The best commercial images I've shot are for my company's website. The target audience are dairy farmers. A simple selection of reasonable images have helped secure far more business than all my headshot sessions put together. Your vid has reaffirmed something for me. Shoot a new portfolio set of images for the website. They'll make more money in six months than I'll make in five years with headshots! Thanks Scott!👍

Scott - partly agree with you but style isn’t just about photography. I earned an ok crust by understanding that you forge key relationships with certain people and then making sure that you deliver consistently and never let them down. My photography was never that great but my service was and whilst I did not have the household names i was happier with a fairly low average spend - but who delivered me a good income stream with a low acquisition cost . One of my clients was a graphics company who offloaded a national burger client as the returns were small compared to the potential liability . The company concerned also knew the value of having their brand as a client and used that to reduce the fee that they paid.

I am a photography student. Love your videos. Thank you. There is a store here around the corner (I'm Dutch) that sell these authentic old-fashioned candy's. I'll try to photograph them in your style :-)

Would you say that it would do away with real estate photography? Of course, no one knows 100%, but I'm really curious to hear your outlook (and because I don't want to do wedding photography).

Many photographers keep copying others style forever and don't undestand that making your own style is very simple, it's very subconscious, you just need to do what feels your way and sometimes then you just need to adapt a little to make it more commercial. Or there is the other extreme of photographers who think their style is perfect and everyone is too dumb to understand them and one day they will be discovered... And it never happens Probably that is the difference from someone who is able to be a great photographer and the others who never will

Thank you Scott, brilliant as always! I’m gonna follow your advice but for different kind of objects (just as a hobby, for now 🤞). At this moment I’m torn between adapting Broncolor light modifiers to Elinchrom or Godox strobes or just reach for some used Pulso with the related generators… I have seen you have been hands-on daily with Broncolor modifiers (and strobes) but also with the recent Godox heads. Do you think adapting Broncolor modifiers can be more convenient, or is just better to go with the good old Pulso stuff?

Scott, can I ask where you get prints done? if it's an online service of course and if you do any adjustments to the photo to suit printing better.

Super useful as always, so thank you for putting this video together! A bit of a paradox that the most common objects are also the ones with the biggest budgets, or - now that I think of it - quite logic, but certainly not where my intuition would have taken me. I think there is also big money in shooting exclusive products like top-of-the-line watches and cars, but for food it clearly has to be with the big (volume) accounts the big money is. Btw - I just uploaded an image of some brown coffee beans to shutterstock. Then I searched for the same (on shutterstock) and got 12 thousand hits - where each hit was a page with 20 images! So clearly the competition is fierce and you need to have a style to be noticed.

I can't remember who said this - I have a feeling it was Ricky Gervais - "When you start getting hate mail, you know you're doing something right" It doesn't mean be offensive - it means that to succeed you have to do something out of the ordinary and as a result, you will almost certainly upset some people. If you don't upset anyone you are being the same, ordinary, middle of the road, unremarkable - even if your work is brilliant. Good isn't good enough. We need to be unique too.
