Awesome video! The dyson batteries suck and take forever to charge. I thought of this idea a couple weeks ago when I was waiting two hours for the battery to charge. Seems our minds think alike 👍 thanks for blazing the trail!

I stumbled on this video by accident. I had made an adapter for my Milwaukee battery so it could power my Hoover Linx stick vacuum. All kinds of power and battery life now.

Great idea and thanks for that. You really should watch a few soldering vids though as doing it this way burns off the flux before it can do its job and is a recipe for dry joints.

Very nice retrofit job. I did the same last year using a Makita 18v battery. Works fine, but since the Makita (and Milwaukee) batteries are only 5 cell 18650s, and the original Dyson pack has 6 cells, you do lose suction power in Turbo mode. But, it’s much nicer to be able to swap out batteries after 15 minutes, and keep going, rather than having to wait for the Dyson battery to recharge. I’m not sure why Dyson hasn’t made one with a replaceable battery.

They actually made them. V11 outsize and V15 have swappable batteries.

There really isn't a need to swap out the battery in 95% of use cases. We have a 3k ft^2 home, and never swap out the battery in ours. I do rotate them, just so one isn't sitting idle for 5 years while the first one gets used up.

Wired a 12v cigarette lighter socket to power a 12v compressor with Milwaukee m18. Pumps up flat mower tyres and even a tractor tyre on a 4ah. It's a portable air beast in little bucket with a handle and lid.

Yep did the same a few years back but with a kobalt 24 volt battery as it's voltage is closer. Still works fantastic🤣

Oh no, its not finished, you have to paint the motor housing red, and the handle plasti dipped black, and leave the purple, and the garlic looking thing the original colors, other than that, I give that a 9/10 great job 😎👍🏼

My best guess is you shorted something perhaps wrong polarity. As there’s no BMS in the dewalt which would give you short circuit protection I wouldn’t recommend using anything but ryobi and Milwaukee for these jobs.

I would recommend some flux next time. If it ever breaks, use some next time it’s super cheap Your solder joints looked a bit weak The flux would help suck the solder in

I did the exact same thing but I used 24v max Kobalt batteries so my dyson would receive the correct voltage and run more efficiently. Kobalt batteries are also cheaper than Milwaukee and still use top quality Samsung cells inside.

How are you getting around the inbuilt low voltage cutoff ? Dyson 6 cell series = 22.2 v nominal & the milwaukee battery 5 cell series 18.5 nominal so wen a preset voltage is reached the vac cuts out & that won't tap into the batteries full capacity. I have a 6cell lipo pack hardwired into mine but i tryed 5cell series makita batteries before i decided needed 6 cells

Yeah I’m sure the electronics don’t like the shunt of the circuit when opening the circuit. Surge current and voltage spikes in some of those electronics will wipe them out. You could use a non variable switch from just about any of milwaukees cordless lineup to integrate a choke to prevent transient voltage spikes and current surges.

Don’t bin the old battery pack. The cells are still good to use in torches and stuff like that. In many occasions it is one or 2 cells that are bad and makes the whole pack useless. I have a radio that works with these cells. Works a treat.

You can't really get the cells out. Only 3 of them, if I remember, and the rest are epoxied in place with a thermistor.

@@littlejackalo5326 You can but it is not for the faint hearted. You need to cut a slot on the plastic cell holder all along the battery length. As I said above, not for the faint hearted. Do it only at your own risk.

For V6, V7 and V8, you can try to buy an adapter. I have one for DeWalt to V8, but I have seen others as well.

I literally just took a survey from Ridgid/Emerson yesterday and I told them their vacuum cleaner suck (not in a good way). And I asked them why they couldn’t their vacuums be more like Dyson, Hoover and Shark that have no pleated filters. So now I’m going to go out and buy a Dyson vacuum cleaner and do this (i’m looking for a used vacuum with a bad battery). You are a genius, or is it just necessity that made you a genius? Either way thank you!

Just bought a used v10 with none of the extra attachments and im loving it so far. No dead battery yet but the v7's are getting up in age and the attachements work with the newer stuff interchangably. Any red button latch is compatible.

Just FYI the Dysons don’t have a pleated filter either, and the filters are expensive to replace if you’re using this for a shop

@@littlejackalo5326 just be careful with the knock offs. Working in retail people bring in the cheap Chinese junk filters on their vacuums claiming they’re suddenly faulty. Usually worth spending the extra $10-20 and getting one that works, unless it’s Amazon where you can just get a refund quick and easy if it’s faulty

There is one bit of drama in that if you use the vacuum for long enough you will discharge the LI batteries below the point of no return and brick your batteries. The circuit board in the Dyson battery is there to disconnect the motor get discharged too far.

Wow great job you missed telling people they need a voltage discount so that the milwaukee battery doesn't get drained to a point where it won't charge again !

Great idea and build! Quick question though, as Milwaukee batteries don't have any voltage protection built into them. Do you know if the Dyson has any voltage protection in there? The risk is if you run the vacuum for too long you could lower the voltage in the battery to point where it won't charge anymore rendering the battery useless.

@@codyollett3485 yeah it’s an odd quirk of the Milwaukee batteries as ryobi have automatic cut off. My only guess is they didn’t put it in to save space and allow for extra batteries and have to stick to the decision since it will cost them more to put it in both the battery and the tool.

@@pincombe Milwaukee has the voltage protection circuitry in the tool instead of the battery. Ryobo put it in the battery so they would be compatible with older Ryobi tools.

The hand held M18 vacuums are trash, and the bigger ones with the hose aren't as handy as a pistol grip one like the Dyson.

Milwaukee needs to make a vacuum with some pre filter cyclone. Most of thier vacs clog filters quickly.

I love this but i need those brass solder scrubbers. Dont use the kitchen ones they destroy it. Add some extra flux to the brass ball and mix it around when new. Ur soldering will be way more reliable and better for longer years to come. Sponges r dead and old news and lower ur temp

Regarding the lack of a voltage protection circuit, has anyone wired in a voltmeter display? I figure it'd be straightforward like vehicle battery circuits but may as well ask if anyones wired a meter in for those neurotic about killing a battery

If it was the newer v11 vacuum i imagine there would be a loss of power but idk. The v11 is i think 28v max and 25.2 nominal and the v11 has larger cells. I forget the size but they are larger then even 21700. Dont know about the older dyson

Im gonna try it with a V7 dyson. Spewing i didnt notice sooner coz we just bought a brand new v10 for $799… ah well, may as well convert the v7 for $15

I would not use Dyson for a shop vac...thing has a very small opening in the unit so it will always get jammed

A fully charged "18V" lithium-ion battery gets to 21 volts. full charge is 4,2V per cell, and you need a minimum of 5 cells anyway for an 18V battery. 18V and 20V lithium-ion batteries are the same.

@@jamess1787 You don't get it, do you? Practically every modern power tool battery has 3 pins: "+", "-" and a control pin. That third pin is used to control the discharge speed and battery temperature. Without that it's very easy to overheat the battery. Including setting it on fire.

Those drill packs are 18v and the vacuum runs at 24v. No issues?
