When I first decided to play my boyfriend’s violin (he bought it secondhand but never played it), the sound post was rattling around inside. I took it to our local violin guy and he put it back in place. He said the violin has a pretty good sound (I had no clue myself!)

A string set that I really like that are comparable to the Dominant are the Fiddlerman strings. I too am on a tight budget and these are really good last a long time and have a great sound. Plus the better strings I have found are much easier on the finger tips. Happy playing!

I have just added another violin to my collection... I won an auction on a well known auction site for a Maidstone (well known type of early 20th century student violin) and whilst the case was a Maidstone the violin was a German early 20th century, by Christian Meifer. Drawn on purfling but 2 piece back in flamed maple, and fairly close grained spruce top. Had to cut a new bridge for it which was a little tricky as the neck angle is low. Will try it tomorrow.

Excellent video for me because I play guitar and banjo, and have an interest in getting a violin and one day a friend gave me a violin. A very cheap violin. In the 100 dollar range I’m sure. And I am very greatful but I had some of these issues so I changed the strings, and I purchased good resin. And the strings helped tremendously kings lion strings and d’addario resin btw. And now I need to get new hairs for my bow but do not know the size. Im sure the bow is cheap. But many many hairs are missing. Maybe I’ll just purchase a new bow, already haired. Then I need to get it to a tech to see if the sound post is properly positioned as I do not know the proper placement although there is one in there. And my bridge is awfully high I think my strings are at 9-11 mm nearly double. The strings sound good and everything else is ok for me to practice scales and open string and double stops for now. Thank you for the tips!

I have improved my cheap ($70) violin a lot, I bought new strings, I took it to the luthier, he adjusted the bridge and put the strings in the same distance, I got a new bow and rosin, also remember to re-hair your bow every year or couple of years, it depends of how often you play, also I changed the metal tailpiece for an ebony, where you can install the fine tuners or use it without them, I decided to have the fine tuners, I'm thinking to take my violin again with the luthier to adjust the pegs and the holes, it all has made a great difference in the sound, when my teacher plays my violin I can notice it makes a nice sound. I'm looking to upgrade with a new violin maybe in a couple of years, when my playing has improved, for now I will keep having the best of my violin.

I have a pretty decent sounding old fiddle but I needed a new case, so I ordered a case plus a plywood violin shaped object off eBay for $40.. Right now I'm sanding off the thick ugly red varnish. Im gonna stain it almost black(Minwax expresso) since theres no pretty grain anyway and the painted on surfings ae now gone of course. Then plan is to apply a coat or two of tru oil(linseed oil based gunstock varnish). Then I'll get some better strings and reshape the bridge. Of course the soundest is rolling around inside now. I may reset it or make a better one. It may sound bad or pretty good, who knows, but its a fun little project.

Top tip: The last point is to pour enough olive oil into the violin to fill the wood pores within the violin. This will dampen the sharp edges from the sound, simulating the ageing process caused by the pores being filled with "crud" over a hundred years. It will not damage the violin as olive has been used for 100's of years on violins for cleaning/oiling etc. Guten Rutsch ins neue jahr.

I bought a 70 dollar violin on Amazon. It actually sounds pretty good. The bridge is installed perfectly to spec, the soundpost too. The rosin seems weird, and idk how good the strings are. I'm wondering what are the advantages of paying fifty dollars for the strings you recommend? Will it be more playable? Will it stay in tune better? Will the sound be just that much better? Will they work with the rosin better?

@Violinspiration

The best person to fix the bridge is a violin maker, luthier. And maybe fixing the bridge will help , but also your elbow level when you bow may need adjusting to prevent hitting the two stings. I hope that helps. Good luck!

I've done a research on the names of the companies that produce strings, rosins , violins, bows and stuff like that because all of them were unknown to me and I had no idea even how to find the name of things that I need for upgrading. Earlier I had only one option - to buy what is in the store or to buy a violin that was like worth of 30 dollars from previous guy. And I had no idea about taking it to the violin maker because it just worked. I changed the strings only if they collapsed and I have a violin with all strings working for over 20 years %) but the sound was weak and scratchy a bit. Few years ago i had to move to EU and bought a new violin. I researched everything and found a description how to pick a right size of the violin. I,ve got all signs that mine is too big. It was just too wide in neck, too high in strings and painful to play. I,m normal hight but my fingers are short and thin. So ilI ordered 7/8 violin and I finally can play it longer than 25 minutes. What a relief

I am embarrassed to tell you that I have the cheapest strings and they've been on for years I don't play as much as some people because I don't have time. And maybe they sound awful but I still like them. I don't think my ears are trained well enough yet to notice the difference with expensive strings . I have broken the E string a couple of times while I was learning to tighten the pegs and put Peg dope on them. For the most part my violin stays in perfect tune. If it gets colder or hotter or the humidity changes a lot then I do have to mess with the pegs. The weather is changing now and pretty soon I'll have to turn on the humidifier that I bought last year. I think even I broke one of the other ones: a or d. And maybe I replaced it with diadero maybe I replace it with ones that were $3 for the whole set of four. But I'm STILL happy with it. 🤷‍♀️ I have worked on my bridge though making sure the strings are equidistant. And that is placed properly I do think it sits flat on the violin pretty much though. As for the rosin I have some Holstein from Fiddler man I think it was about $10. I don't remember. And the cheap stuff that came with my violin I like it just as well. 🤷‍♀️ When I look in at my sound post it seems to be positioned where it's supposed to be according to some of the information on your website. So I think the common denominator is I can't HEAR the difference yet🤣

You do have a good point to consider. But on the other hand, just because something costs more does not ensure it will sound better. Listening to others play and review, using Headphones, might help you hear the differences. Things in your face sound different on recordings and to the live listener.

Hello, thank you very much. Sometimes I think that I am the most untalented and the worst person who likes to play the violin. I don't want anyone to hear me practice playing the violin. Two days ago, the seller gave me a cell phone. When I used it, it seemed very dry and bad, and the result was a bad sound. Then I understood how important the phone is, and now I understand the things you said, how important the bridge and wire string are🌸🙏
