This is a great and helpful video. The next time you should steam the fabric before you start painting. That would get rid of the creases along the backdrop at the end. Thanks for sharing!

I make my own backdrops, but I use cotton (from Ikea) rather than canvas for easier storage. Also use colored dyes instead of paint so it docent crack when rolled up for storage. Creases. I often use Calico in stead of cotton, wash it and leave the creased crumpled effect. I have a pole loop sewn across the top and bottom of the material, top one for the support pole and the bottom one for another pole to add some weight if needed. The good thing about making your own is they are unique. Occasionally I will ask an art student to paint a scene with the dyes. Another effect can be had by dyeing your cloth with various colors, have it laid out flat. I do mine outside in the garden and then while it is still wet throw hand fulls of ice on to the backdrop, as it melts its gives a different effect as it reduces the intensity of the colors where the ice has melted. Good luck. Hope this is helpful and be different.

Great suggestions - I've gotten $1 king size sheets from Habitat and used paint as well as Rit dye on them. Not nearly as heavy as canvas and gets the job done.

There are also rolls of pre-primed canvas. They are generally primed with a couple gesso layers. This van save some time (and effort) and allow you focus more on the creative finishing. Also they come rolled, so no creases. They are more expensive than a dropcloth... but for the time they save and the quality of the final product... It is worth it.

Grab yourself a steam iron, hang it up and get all the folds out of your canvas before you primer. You can always put creases in it later if you want that look.

I know it’s been a year but I want to know how well did the backdrop standup. My daughter is getting married and the new tradition is guests having their pictures taken. Her wedding will be outdoors and reception at another indoor venue. I wanted to used stencils. I was thinking of using sheets but a drop cloth canvas is much more sensible. So, how did your drop cloth stand up, what would you do differently (such as use fabric paint and/or textile medium) and how would I go about using a 12x12 stencil?

I have no problem with creases on mine, I just don’t like the square fold pattern you get when you buy it. I stuffed it in a bucket and soaked it, periodically yanking it out and stuffing it back in, which gives you wrinkles, but irregular wrinkling. To my eye it actually improves the look, depending on your lighting, of course. Also, I like the look of mild vignetting, going from lighter to darker from the center to the edges. You can also use a tint-shift from top to bottom or center to edge (more versatile if you are going to use the backdrop in both landscape and portrait) though this is more challenging artistically. Super fun and it’s a project that allows me to obliterate (for a short time) my perfectionism: chaos is actually the goal here!

If you can find a used floor steamer, they do wonders for taking the creases out. I’d use a canvas no heavier than 6oz. Or you’ll be steaming for a while. Also, make sure to check if the canvas is sewn together before you buy. Some have a seam and some don’t. You can look through the plastic and see it amongst the folds.

First off it cost about 300 to buy a ok backdrop. So far doing this ive spent about 300 just trying to make 2, but i dont paint so i had no materials. If you do 2 coats of primer it needs to dry for at least 5 hours no discussion, itll bleed if its wet. I purchased the exact same canvas’s , which come creased because there folded i couldn’t find away around it. After the primer its pretty much just the painting just make sure you tape it down and have fans and you are in an open area. This could be very affective if you wanted something very custom like me and i plan to continue to make, if your patient and dont care about your whole studio smelling like paint but if i didnt have a point to prove or knew how much money i would have invested into this. I would have just let someone make it. Good thing now whatever back drop thats requested in the future all i need is paint and a canvas🤷🏽‍♂️

Good question? Is it the texture?
@russellewis3331
@russellewis3331 5 жыл бұрын
I grew up in clothing factories so spent years in fabric stores. The best things to buy there would be commercial rolls of 2 weights of muslin, and a big roll of cheesecloth. Some satin fabrics in the wedding area can work and laces and sheers are good wardrobe alternatives in boudoir. The muslin can be cut to length and for really cool texture you can hot glue wisps and folds and build up ripples with the cheesecloth. A super handy hint: ask a college theatre geek or art student to help in exchange for photo work. The photo backdrops and theatre scrims are essentially the same craft.

Glad you love watching our videos, thanks for the support! Coloured fabric differs in weight and texture to that of canvas - which is usually used for painted backdrops (muslins).
