To all the haters posting negative comments, firstly this guy had never made a concrete counter in situ before and was good enough to show every stage warts n all so we could learn from his mistakes. Someone with a bigger ego would have never posted this video because we all know the "experts" will being telling us how it should be done. Maybe post a comment with a link to the video of the perfect job you did so we can all learn, but we all know 99% of people posting negative/what you should have done comments are pathetic individuals who use this channel to try feel better about themselves, let's see if you could carry out all types of construction to his standard. Check out all the videos home renovation have posted and you will realise this guy is a top multi skilled tradesman with an impressive attention to detail.

I have been watching all of your videos back to back. I just bought a house, and plan on finishing the garage + a lot of other projects. I feel like im sitting through the entire project with you. the banter chit chat is amazing. I have worked in design and engineering for 20 years, and watching your videos i get it. you take a lot of the mystifying parts out of the work, and explain the over complicated approaches. I enjoy seeing the products I would never look for randomly. I have quite a lot of work ahead of me, but you've shown its a one man weekend job for a lot of these things. A DIY that will save my family a boat load. Thanks, and keep it up!

If you pull the filter off your sander, you can connect your vacuum to that port and you're working virtually dust-free. I do it that way with my Bosch sander and dust extractor. Leaves the house spotless! Lastly, great vids, I just found you and have been binging all your stuff. You are so easy to watch and a wealth of knowledge.

Here's a guy taking the time to show us how projects can be attempted without a background in the building trade. This one highlighted why construction projects can easily go past a deadline but more importantly - don't start crying about how this or that didn't go as it should have, but roll up your sleeves and get in there and finish it out like a champ. This z form system can turn out to be an easier and nicer looking project than building a counter outside and lugging it in - once you have the process down. This was a first attempt and it was excellently filmed and not edited to look prefect, teaching is how to get the same or hopefully better results for ourselves. Thank you for making this video!

Oh my gosh: I have worked in machine shops and wood shops a lot, and done plenty of my own work on wood furniture and limestone and today, thanks to this guy I now know the true purpose of those holes in the sand paper! Nobody in all those years ever said anything about it, but this guy just mentions it in passing like, "oh by the way..." Keep up the good work, and thanks!

I did a counter about 2-3 yrs ago and they had a mesh net with these little clips that keep it midway in the thickness of the tops. I been a carpenter for 25yrs and had my fair share of concrete work and I tell you honestly if it was a customer and not a buddies that talked me into helping him. I would have been buying them new tops! One and done for me and I usually welcome a challenge lol

Very informative. I had a turquoise cement kitchen island and counters done after searching for someone who would do it in northern Arizona. He had me check samples several times at his shop/adding miracle gro - yes; and acid to get the swirls of copper imitating real turquoise. Its very cheerful in my mountain cabin, rather than typical black, white or gray. I did not know about the Spectrum bee's wax every six months. Its just been one year; but will go out and buy that to protect it. Thank you!

Hi Jeff, Ran into your videos by mistake but I'm glad I did! The way you show things from start to finish and even include your mistakes is perfect for homeowners who want to do it themselves. I wanted to ask if you have ever done concrete stain, the acid spray stain kind and added a clear coat to give you the wet look? I built a 300 sqft Rec/Family room addition and decided to go with no flooring. I went with a dark acid stain and a clear coat that gives you the wet look. The final product came out perfectly....until the a few weeks when it got wet from mopping or even drops of water! Basically it started to gray/cloud up where ever it got wet. Im wondering if I did something wrong in the process of painting/rolling the clear coat on. I did make sure EVERYTHING was dry and to be honest the slab was poured over two years ago. What are you thoughts? Have you done a stain with a clear coat like this? Best, K p.s this kitchen and countertops look great! I am going to attempt this in my next house, just sold my current home and looking for our next one. I'll be reaching out for help! jk jk ha ha ha take care and keep up the great work sir.

Sorry I am not familiar with that stain. I keep to food grade materials and use a penetrating sealer. Cheers! P.S. we are here to help.

Nice work and good information on the process and some of the tools that are out there BTW Fast Cap has a great set of scribes available they are plastic and the nice thing about that is they do not make any marks on Drywall or even finish painted walls i actually have a couple of them i carried in the feild for installing Architectual Woodworking for 20 years and they never had a problem for me i am in no way associated with Fast Cap other than owning a few of their products and being a Subscriber of their You Tube channel just a suggestion on mixing in a 5 gallon bucket with a drill usually if you put water in the bucket first it seems to mix quicker When i was younger i helped Out some freinds that were in the ceramic tile and Marble industry and did some apprenticing with them often i was mixing thinset and grout to keep the job moving as fast as we could at one point for a outdoor tile we were grouting it with a Quickcrete bagged mortar and sealing it with Biled Linseed Oil/ Mineral Spirits mixture That happened to be in South Florida and many of those jobs were for Pool Patios and l the tile was a Mexican Terra-cotta hand formed 12 X12 tile with 1/2 “ grout joints the Lindseed oil sealer was used to seal the grout and tile

I did the flip method by forming using shelf board and added lots of colourful granite stones. I did it 5 times for different pieces and messed up the first attempt completely. I then ground down the surface by maybe an 1/8 and polished thcrapnout of it. Definitely things I did wrong and wish I had watched this first, but it was fun and ended up with a great result.

I've been doing a variety of construction projects for a long time now. I'm very good at what I do. But I will say this, we don't get good at what we do by doing things right the first time. We get good by learning how to fix all the mistakes we make trying to make it look good. It's one thing to have everything in a project go smoothly and come out perfect, but it's a whole different beast when something goes wrong but we still have to make it right. So I can relate to this video. This is more realistic of what the outcome usually is. And why people like myself make money doing it.

Just finished pour of a 15 foot basement bar using exact molds and concrete with the exception of a charcoal coloring added. Bar has two levels. Was a two day pour, about a week apart. We now have a 900lb bar, so pour in place was the only option. We are still in process of polishing (most labor intensive but totally worth it) we absolutely love it for the look and design we were going for...thank you so much for making video!

hey man nice video and very helpful and i like ur honesty. i have seen other videos on utube and they use non aggregate concrete with fiberglass mesh. why did u not use that curiously. can u make one like that but finish with epoxy coating so that it looks like marble. i am not an expert but would like to see and expert do it and give an honest opinion on that.

Very beautiful work 👍 Mr.Thorman but let me ask you why you don't put iron net in mix of concrete that call P.R.C that makes the concrete very strong good job again Mr.Thorman Mr.creativeness

I will consider a different approach next time. Like I said in the video, this was my first time. I do appreciate the strength in the concrete mix however I found it too difficult to work with. I prefer to technique on the melamine. We will have to show that one day soon as well.

Your videos are great! I'm from Ottawa and working on my own whole first floor reno, removing load bearing walls, moving the kitchen.. Picking up lots of helpful tips from your videos. Tip from me, you should look at getting a dust shroud for your grinder, hooks right up the the shop vac, sooo much less dust!!

I like this system. For sure figure out a better way than grind inside like that. Seems like a little more time on the tops with the float would work wonders. The good thing is that if you totally screw up yo can always attach a nice big shop vac to get most of the dust. Doing it like that inside is a little nutty, something I have done but still.

Fantastic video, this shows the errors most of us are going to get and how you'd go about and to fix them. All these "it's so easy just do as I do" videos really do not show the reality of what a viewer is going to experience when trying this themselves. Shows the "pitfalls" and "oh wish I thought of that" parts with a nice dose of humor, fun to watch. What I would do differently is put more effort in the vibrating, it's not only to get the bubbles out but also makes leveling easy as vibrating does that really well. One more tip, vibrating makes concrete stronger is it gets more compact and structural integrity improves. Concrete vibration improves the strength of the concrete by about ~4% per each percent of air removed, as you start with about 20% of the air in your mix you end up improving it a lot, basically if you get half out your 40% stronger. This gets' noticeable on the corners and other bits that you ideally do not want "chipping" off when bumped (google Concrete Vibration Handbook). Anyway, fantastic channel, I love it, a must see before my wife has me starting a new "project".
