Here's a tutuorial on how to make and apply your own guitar headstock logo - and get a factory finish. I'm left handed and wanted a black Fender Telecaster with a rosewood fretboard and a 70's era logo on the headstock. Fender don't make such a guitar so I had to create my own!

Very nice. I'm replacing the lined fretless neck on my Fender Jazz Bass (22 year old Mexican) with a Warmoth unlined fretless and this is excellent guidance on keeping that "Fender look". Much appreciated, brother. I don't do this kind of thing all that often, but I'm subscribed now anyway to support your channel. Thanks.

Im sure youve figured out by now, but you may have intonation issues. I replaced the 21 fret neck on a bass with a 22 fret after it got snapped and it won't intonate correctly now. Still got it close enough to be playable, but had to crank it all the way to get it how it is.

Excellent presentation. Very Interesting. I'm doing a S-style spare parts build and have been curious about how others were doing the head marking decals. To be clear, while I am using a few Fender brand parts, I am not using "Fender" Logo or brand references. This is an observation, not a criticism. After your first wet sanding, I would have dried the head and applied additional coats of matte clear, then continued the wet sanding process. Of course, that would lengthen the build process by perhaps a few days for allowing additional clear coat drying time before final wet sanding and top coating. Obviously, you were careful enough in workmanship not to need my observations. Thanks

Great job mate. Excellent video. I wish we lived closer and you could help me redo my 1969 Fender Srat. The writing and headstock got damaged when I was at a charity function and a woman left her 4 year old in a van that was still running. The boy got out of his seat and put the van in drive and drove into our stage, damaging my Strat and a bass but no one was injured luckily. It just scraped my headstock, but I think I could do what you explained in your video. Thanks again mate! Cheers! 🎸🎶❤️🎸😎

poly will yellow over time....lacquer will eventually crack...with poly you do get layers but lacquer you just get an increase in the thickness of the layer as it melts into the previous layer...if you over do it you might get a wrinkled effect so keep it thin

Awesome good video Just 2 question, i see you use matt lacquer at the beginning, can i go all the way with gloss from start to end? Also if i have sand the headstock and stain it, i should put some lacquer first right? (I’m guessing the headstock before putting the lacquer is already somehow finished or a layer of lacquer)
@jtothepmusic
@jtothepmusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can go all the way with gloss lacquer. If you want to stain the wood do it before you do anything else! I would have thought you would want to sand the headstock down to the bare wood before applying any stain. I'd probably make sure that is fully dry then seal it with a coat of lacquer before applying the decal and carrying on. Thanks for watching

Hi, Sorry, only just seen this comment. No, gloss or matt - it doesn't matter all I'd say is don't mix lacquers - ie don't use acrylic and then cellulose or vice versa. I'm not sure how they'd react with each other.

I really can't remember! I think it had a coat of satin or matt lacquer to seal the wood. I left enough time to make sure the lacquer had fully dried - nothing worse than sanding into slightly tacky lacquer. You then have to start from scratch!

Hi, the headstock on the neck I purchased was already coated so I just lightly sanded it to 'key' it up a bit but it literally was a very light sand - I don't think it would make too much difference if you didn't do it. The we sanding was just done with water. My main advice is just have patience. Thanks for watching
@johnsmythe6134
@johnsmythe6134 2 жыл бұрын
Judith - Shoot whatever the headstock base is (bare wood, acrylic, enamel, lacquer, etc.) with several coats of LACQUER first. Also, at least 2 coats on the freshly printed decal. Then, (as I do) successively apply at least 8 to 10 coats of gloss lacquer with wet sanding in between each coat. Mix a bit of dish soap in the water and don't go any coarser grit than 800, then finish up with 2000, 6000, 8000, and finally brown paper bag rubout, then auto rubbing/cutting/blending compounds. I've been a pro luthier for over 5 decades and never a complaint. WARNING, though...A buddy of mine got thrown in prison and all of his "counterfeit" guitars were destroyed. Fender and all the rest WILL press charges if You duplicate their stuff and pretend it's genuine. There are a billion other ways to tell, though, so no matter how good Your decal jobs are, it's not worth it. Change the wording or use other names, etc. Peace and love, -Smythie
