Hey creative people! Do you have solid art skills or thorough knowledge in art history? Do you want to make online art courses and teach art online? There isn't a better time than today. Due to the lockdown, many kids and adults are looking for online courses and quality content. You can help them grow and make some extra cash.
Today I want to show you 14 different websites and tools in 3 categories - marketplaces, standalone apps and SCORM compliant learning management system. They require different levels of computer literacy, and they cost anything from $0 to $1500 a month. Let's have a look into this list, and find the right tool for your needs!
1 Udemy
Founded in 2010. As of Jan 2020, the platform has more than 50 million students and 57,000 instructors teaching courses in over 65 languages.
2 Skillshare
Also founded in 2010, Skillshare offers courses in creative arts, design, entrepreneurship, lifestyle, technology and more. It’s the most popular platform among visual artists, like boutique store instead of supermarkets.
3 Teachable
Good sales and marketing tools, very mainstream, quite reliable. $39 a month or $29 billed annually, unlimited students but 5% transection fee.
4 Thinkific
Beautiful template, for creative professionals. Free to make 3 courses. $49 a month basic plan, $99 professional.
5 Course Craft
Very simple and easy, minimalist course authoring software. It’s free to integrate into your website. Free plan, no upfront costs, unlimited courses, instant payouts, 9% transection fee. Paid plans from $23 a month. Low budget choice.
6 Edmodo
If you teach art to underage students (K12), you can consider Edmodo. You can invite parents to join and check on the progress of your students. Edmodo is free to use for teachers.
7 Kajabi
If you want a professional tool with strong funnel marketing, Kajabi might be right for you. Starting from $119 a month, designed for enterprises.
8 LearnWorlds
It has strong features such as interactive eBooks, branded digital certificates. It’s SCORM compliant and mobile friendly. Starting from $24 a month.
9 LearnDash
It’s the most trusted WordPress LMS plugin that works with most WP themes. You need a WP website for it to work though. Pricing starts from $159 a year.
10 TalentLMS
You can create 10 free courses for up to 5 users with TalentLMS. The paid plan starts from $59 a month. It’s primarily designed for companies to train their employees via courses and online seminars.
11 Moodle
Released in 2002, Moodle is probably the most popular learning management system. It’s free and open-source, written in PHP.
*Correction: Moodle was released in 2002, but I said in 2012 instead, oops!
12 Adobe Captivate
Captivate is known as a screen recording software but it goes beyond that. You can create mobile-ready courses easily after learning how to use it. If you teach digital art, Captivate could be a good choice for you. Subscription from $33.99 a month.
13 Google Classroom
Google Classroom is an online platform that enhances the learning experience in the physical classroom. It is part of the Google Apps for Education suite which strives to enable paperless learning in the classroom. Like Google docs and google forms, it’s free for all users.
14 Capabiliti
Based in Australia, Capabiliti is a mobile-first training platform. The standard license at $1500 a month. What? I do not recommend it to any freelancers. But it gives us a good idea of how much those software are worth.

I've been procrastinating making a 2D Animation course for years. Now I'm kicking my self because this would have been a good year to have it out, considering the circumstances.

What do you think about releasing videos in a course and on youtube? Thanks for the helpful info! 😁💖

A Johnson 👋 Yes, I think KZfaq is a really good compliment because it’s the second largest search engine and mainly for people who want to learn. I have seen some artists release 1 minute promo video about their Skillshare course on KZfaq. That’s not very effective, because we are not on KZfaq to watch trailers/teasers/ads. We are here to seek value. The most important is to provide good value for your audience!

Mo, this is very helpful. I agree its the time to start thinking about it. The covid 19 crisis is sad/happy that way, but by the time some of your viewers take your advice things might be getting back to normal.... BUT... this doesn't mean we would have wasted our time listening to you and following our hunch this is for us. The idea is to not convince people we are geniuses but that we will constantly make our points in our educating and then back them up by using them. I think of people who offer courses through their websites and I think they must be using the ones you said needed a website to begin with. But either way this is a booming market that will only grow with the internet being more widely and generally accepted as mostly good information. I'm wondering, in your recent video about recording art videos you said a cheap replacement for a camera that shoots pointing down is a detachable webcam. In Canada we're about to get a relief check from the government and I have a bit saved up. I need a new cell phone if I want the point down camera to be a cell phone, but if the webcam is the better short term investment I have a cell phone that does all the internet stuff its just the camera went awol. So a $200 ish cell phone taking about 1/3rd of my money, or a cheaper webcam? What do you suggest? Thanks as always. I'm like A Johnson I think anyways, I do want to make this a part of my business. I hope she (I think its a girl :) ) and others like myself can be inspired thoroughly in this crisis, because if it were to go too long maybe the money for online courses dries up for a bit. But if its as projected its probably more likely we'll be competing with actual classrooms again soon, which doesn't make it pointless to do, but we should be as professional and insightful at the same time. Thank you, i got a lot from this. Dave "Sparrow Mountain" Manicom

Sparrow Mountain 👋 Hi Dave! Things will be tough for a while, hopefully we will get everything back to the “new normal” in a couple of months. As far as I know eBay and Amazon are working even in lockdown. Maybe a Logitech HD webcam that costs around $40-50? It’s not expensive, and can do conference calls if you need that option later. Otherwise a secondhand iPhone would be better than Android if you plan to record mainly videos (iPhone has really good video encoding). I think you can find a secondhand iPhone 7 for $300 or something like that?

Sparrow Mountain I saw some older videos you took, which camera did you use? Are you happy with the results? Do you have some features you wanted but didn’t have with the device you used?

@@VeryPrivateGallery I don't know for sure, but my parents are immuno compromised so we're taking some extra precautions. So no going to the art store (yet) and not going to the post office yet. Yes I am more concerned with homeless people than sales, I have a warm bedroom/studio (my dad and I built a horseshoe desk around my whole room and I have a little nook I sleep in. I like it and I feel blessed.

@@VeryPrivateGallery thank you, I'm happy with their quality and my production value (voice over and small real time moments) can go up. But I do want the directly above the painting ability for sketching videos and watercolor, those two specifically no real other need for a top down angle, but my camcorder simply doesn't have the angle possibility to do it. Its not very important, right now basically I'm 100% doing acrylic, but I have studied some watercolor painters recently and found the element of a great sketch and watercolor go really good together. I kind of already knew it, but it is on my mind that acrylic doesn't lend itself to an under-sketch, so I want to get busy figuring out what I could do with sketch/watercolor. So yeah I'm still interested in your advice between a $200ish phone or a cheaper webcam with a general need for a phone eventually. Should I skip a step and just get the phone? Thanks again, you are a cheerful person, you're teaching me a lot about presentation and how to be prepared for your video. And I love how you went to film making school and your videos are seamless and lighting/set up is fresh. Keep inspired yourself. Thanks -Dave

Sparrow Mountain Look for good sales opportunity for a reconditioned or secondhand iPhone (or a new Xiaomi, Samsung phone), it works for you video for sure. There are some refurbished iPhones from Apple Store website too. You might also need a cable/Chromecast or smart tv to monitor to watch what you are shooting in real time. Because if you suspend the phone upstairs, you can not see the screen from below.
