This recipe makes 4 things: whipped soap, whipped body butter, whipped body scrub, or whipped shaving butter! WOW!!! This is a super light & fluffy butter that gives a close shave & leaves skin silky smooth & soft. Say bye-bye to razor burn forever!
RECIPE: 100 grams butter (I used kokum butter & a bit of shea), 50 grams expeller pressed coconut oil, liquid carrier oil or surfactant. *Optional Ingredients*: 10 grams fragrance oil. A preservative isn't necessary as this recipe doesn't contain water, however, you may add 2 grams to be safe (wet hands will be dipping into jar). Germall Plus is recommended. You may also add sodium lauryl sulfoacetate (SLSa) to create a thick, rich lather. Add as much as you see fit. I'd suggest starting off at about 15-30 grams then go from there. I was going to add some, but I challenged myself to make a plain shaving cream. {I have a major problem when it comes to just leaving stuff simple & elegant... I always have to go in & "Dora" it up somehow; adding all sorts of extra stuff that isn't necessary.}
Melt the butter then add coconut oil (the butter will melt oil). Use a stick blender to mix everything. Freeze the butter (about an hour), then let it become room temperature. Mix the butter & break up chunks. Blend the butter once more; get it as smooth as possible so it won't have small chunks once it's whipped. Due to the friction of the blender, the butter will be somewhat melted & limp. Chill it in fridge about 30 minutes to stiffen back up. Now whip it good.
Add a bit of fragrance oil (10 grams) if you’d like (I added way too much in video). Add just a little bit of liquid (10 grams at a time), whipping after each addition. Continue whipping & adding liquid until it's light, fluffy, & has stiff peaks.
ISSUES: If the butter is limp (not stiff) or too soft, leave it uncovered for 12-24 hours. Then try to whip it once more. If it's still limp, you may need to add additional hard butter. Melt, freeze, blend, & chill the hard butter (as before). Then add it to the limp butter, a little bit at a time, whipping after each addition, until it's right. If the butter is too stiff, dense, or hard, add a little bit of liquid at a time, whipping after each addition, until it's right.
You may want to cure the butter uncovered for 3-6 hours before piping During this time it may deflate & dry. If it does, add a little bit of liquid at a time, whipping after each addition, until it's right. You'll only have to do this once. I had to do this for all of my other experiments (except this time in the video). I'm pretty sure coconut oil is the culprit.
To get the beautiful frills, you'll need to use Russian piping tips, specifically the ball nozzles. Keep the tip in the same position & turn it back & forth in small half turns. Slowly pipe the butter so the frills grow & fluff out. As the space is filled, slowly move the tip up & keep piping.
Rub the butter on your skin & shave as you normally would.
