There are hand held pump sprayers available, usually used for gardening or indoor plants. In my experience, you can get them up to a higher nozzle pressure than those larger types like in the video. The extra pressure would likely help disperse the oil into a finer mist. As an added bonus, at least where I live, you can get them at a dollarama for four bucks (Canadian "dollar" store).

Amazing information, thank you. I have been spending about £15 for 5 litre of stain that does not protect the wood. I have seen this diesel and oil mix waterproofing the wood so think the next application will be this. I have the wagner sprayer already and it takes less than an hour to do 60 foot length of my 6 foot tall fence. (previously took 2-3 days with a brush!)

Started using just used oil and a brush, since I don't have a need for diesel, so I tried to avoid it...just bought diesel tonight, so I can spray areas that are hard to get a brush in. Using a garden sprayer, bc it's not a big job for my needs. So far I love how my umbrella stand table I made turned out! After 24 hours, no smell, gorgeous color, and no residue when touched.

I built and stained over a thousand rough sawn pine sheds. Would mix 4.5 gallons of diesel and add anywhere from 1/2 -1 cup of coal tar to make a light/medium/dark brown stain. Applied with a "Good" pump sprayer (Hudson)- kind with an adjustable brass tip that was easy to clean- not the cheap , big box plastic adjust a nozzle type the poster tried- you could see the terrible spray pattern it generated. With a good sprayer, you can really dial it in and get quite detailed with it. Nice work here -looked great!!

It won't light in a container but it is an accelerant if the shed ever catches fire. Used motor oil and diesel is exactly what we use to burn brush piles. Although I imagine most of the diesel evaporates off.

Great Video! I was about to buy stain sealer combo for $45 a gallon which would come out to $2,000 for my fence. I was like....now way a farmer would do that and I started searching for a farmer recipe which is the 50/50 diesel and used motor oil. I added an extra ingredient that you might consider. Borax and Boric Acid. These are the key ingredients in Tim bor and Boracare and also very cheap. These will keep the wood boring insects (termites included) away along with wood rot pathogens and mold. You won't need those carpenter bee traps anymore. I am getting ready to run my first batch today. I can't wait to do a cost analysis at the end. I'm glad you did the match demonstration too. My wife was worried about the flammability aspect. I explained that linseed oil in store bought stains is way more volatile and stain rags will spontaneously combust. Thanks again for the video.

I generate a lot of used synthetic based oils as a millwright, one of which is a 625 with an orange tinge after use. I take 5 gallons of the used 625 and add a quart of common dark walnut stain. It mixes well and cuts the viscosity of the 625 base to a nice, usable degree. This stuff works amazingly well as both a finish and a protectant. Great tips in your video as well! The shed looks fantastic.

Fantastic tip and it looks great! Ok two questions an I will look at comments but how does it smell and why catch bees? As a suggestion you can build little bee nests for them by drilling holes in a piece of wood and nailing to a tree or hanging. They are pollinators. Save the bees. Thank you for your video.

Thanks for watching the smell goes away fast and I agree about bees but they make my wood into Swiss cheese.

Thanks for the detailed video. Curious if you have ever mixed linseed with diesel then added motor oil as needed for color? Looking to stain our fence and have been hearing/reading different opinions on it.

Beautiful! use motor oil as a stain inside and outside without adding anything to it. The best part is the clean up. I keep the brushes/rollers wrapped in plastic and reuse them over and over. They never dry out and all are always ready to go! The smell goes away in less than week, usually a day or two. Recently stained an entire inside staircase (treads and risers) and the smell was unnoticeable in 2 days unless you bend down and take a big whiff. The sprayer works too but it always seems to be windy and overspray becomes a problem so I prefer to just slap it on. It’s slower than spraying but I get a lot less on me and everything else. The color outside seems to only last about a year depending on the type of wood, it’s finish (rough or smooth) and the amount of direct sunlight it receives. But I have used oil by the bucketful as a result of vehicle and equipment maintenance so it literally costs me nothing except the time to apply/reapply. And a little goes a long way! I encourage everyone to stay away from the death in a can stuff from the store and go with something safer, cleaner, far cheaper, and just plain better.

Run your used oil through a sz100 paint strainer. You will be able to run in a pneumatic spayer. Heat the oil first so it goes through the filter quicker.

That looks real nice. Does the smell ever go away?.. I was thinking about treating the underside of a building like this so it doesn't rot out so fast. Im an aircraft mechanic and have an old diesel f250 so I basically have an unlimited supply of old oil and jet fuel but I don't like the smell of jet fuel or diesel for that matter. Do does the smell ever go away? I was thinking about using exon 2380 for a more carmel color or possibly Mobil jet 2 for a more cedar look. They have really low odor but the diesel or jet fuel smell is going to get me some push back from my wife. Maybe mineral spirits would be better?

Jim, can you tell me how long it takes for the smell to dissipate when you spray the oil/diesel? Thanks

Thank you for this video, if you have time - a few questions: Does this actually work well as a sealer, how often have you had to recoat? I just washed off my privacy fence (250' long, 6' high) and am about to apply a brightener before staining/sealing. Was looking up products for the latter and came across this...could this be a viable alternative to using ready seal,TWP, etc? Fence is pine and located in Charleston, SC FYI

I wonder how mixing with lacquer thinner would be? Since that is what most paints or stains base is.

Will this work for deck /railing boards? I have a Wagner sprayer and my deck needs to be stained, I'll have to try this. It would be cheaper than buying stain...right? Your so neat when you fdo projects. God Bless you and thanks for another cool video!
