Make your patches disappear! In this video I show you some very simple techniques to prep out patching easily and quickly.

Some of the gear I use and recommend below:
For really good results when patching, I use hyde joint knives; These are super flexible and perfect for patching.

Always use lambs wool roller sleeves. Holds paint and very little splatter:

Hands down the best painting instruction videos I've found on KZfaq. I rarely like or comment, but I wish KZfaq had recommended these earlier, so.. I think I've watched most of these videos and I use several of the tips regularly (how to load and "flick" brush, how to patch, how to roll, how to clean roller by centrifugal force and garden hose, how to cut in properly with sash brush and without tape, etc etc etc). Some tips are common sense (you'd think..), some are less so, all are good--always short and to the point! Thanks!

greeeaat tip on the stippling. I had white specs showing through where the roll didn't fully cover since I'm not that great at rolling lol. But yea, took a small amount of paint, covered the spots, feathered it, then stippled it to break the brush lines. Worked great!

The Benchman you are a million percent right. trusting the primer in paint/primer is hit or miss depending on the color.

Hi There thanks for the great video and i have a darker patch when i have painted my wall (framing) and i have painted over it and it is still remaining dark do you know how i can solve this without repainting the whole wall as the other 3 walls are perfect if i was to nearly dab and dry brush the paint on would that help and make it look lighter and its the same tin of paint and mixed thoroughly thanks in advance 👍🏻

at 2:10 it looks the video jumps it feels missing an important part this part I do not understand (up just before I 02:12 and look this is just this is the 02:13 highest bit of patch very quick to sand ) Can you please explain in details what do you de after painted the patch with undercoat and what filler you use. It depends on some varibles, but general rule of thumb, paint entire wall to natural breaks. Some flat paints touch-up beautifully, not many tho.

just for something I worked out, I've always done it this way as you do however when I brush on the paint over the patched section I then get a small roller and dry roll the paint, blends it nicely. Just a light touch with the roller.

Good stuff, for me tho, it's just one more thing to carry around if it's a big job, not practical in my case, and it works a charm without it.Plus, it's one more thing to wash up. But if it works for you, nothing wrong with that, it's the end result that matters. Thanks for posting :)

I do something very similar. My walls have small orange peel, which most homes do. That's the main reason why smooth, sanded patches become visible in the first place. - I am also working on patches that have been sanded; some are gouges in the wall. - A general contractor taught me to use PVA primer on them first so that the spackle can absorb the primer. - So, I use the PVA primer and a 1-inch artist brush that has been used so much that the bristles form a circle instead of a rectangle. I play with it... if the primer is very thin, then I let it get some air to thicken up. I dab the tips of the brush in the paint, then dab onto the wall. - Once I am happy, I use the latex primer... then paint the wall. The idea is to make the dots you are making look like the surrounding texture. It might take more than one try to really blend. The results may not be PERFECT, but they'll be way better than "completely flat surface".

I get a really good match the way I do it, and it's much faster than what you described but if your way works for you, nothing wrong with that. :) Good job

Do you have to roll afterward? would it not be enough to just cover the patches with paint. If it is the same paint as the one on the wall it should just blend right?

Yes, that is correct. But It really depends on the paint that is being used. Good quality flat paints will work in that way. Afraid that's it tho. In the video, and what is used throughout Australia, it's low sheen and will show. In which case, the entire wall needs a repaint after patching. Any paint with a sheen (and cheap flats) won't work

If you have the same paint as long as it isn't dirty around the patch you can feather it out with a roller instead of painting the whole wall I do this at work all the time saves time

That's true Tyler and I do it too, but it depends on the type of paint used. It doesn't work with paints with a sheen. Or at least not good enough for me.

I agree. Even using the same can of paint as the original paint, the sheen never quite matches. Touch-up paint always dries slightly shinier. It is obvious when viewed from a side angle.

What is the paint referring to as 'under coat' before sanding - just a regular paint?

Yes, in this case, it's just the wall paint I'm using. It'll work just fine as a first coat, which is considered the undercoat. Happy painting :)

Hi I have a small area I wanted to touch up but the paint I got was a little to dark so I bought a lighter colour paint but what I apply the lighter one it’s still dark how can I lighten the darker area up so it all matches

There is a way but unfortunately, it's very tricky and time consuming to get it just right. Not really for the diy, but here goes. :) First off, what base is the paint you purchased? If it's from a white base, it's a case of adding white paint (very little at a time) to the paint you want to lighten, mix it up super well. Apply a little spot on the wall, using a hair dryer, dry the paint (it has to be completely dry for you see the real colour). If it looks good, no need to repeat. If not, you need to repeat over and over again until you get it matching the colour you want.The trick is adding white paint a little at a time, once you go to far, it all over red rover. The simple way is to repaint the intire surface, and for you, most likey faster. Good luck and thanks for posting your question, :)

The 'Undercoat' in this instance is simply general all purpose undercoat (oil base) but really, you could get away with the wall paint as your undercoat.

So I am a brand new painter... never painted anything in my life and I took on the job of painting my baseboards and walls on my lower level. The part that I thought would be super hard was the cutting in process but that actually went fairly well. However I seem to really suck at rolling. I watched the videos, primed the roller, bought the right equipment and yet I still have some spots where i didn't get enough coverage or can see some minor lines. How do I fix these? Is there any easy way to correct what I have done without re painting the entire wall? Even when I put on a second coat I made mistakes. Maybe too much pressure or not enough paint... I have no idea but now I am just trying to fix what I screwed up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi O'dorable, I'm not sure if I can give you a simple solution at all or even a solution. I'm pretty sure tho, that it's simply because you are so new to it. If I can make an assumption, it sounds like your are either not using enough paint, or not going over the wall enough times with the roller, (eg: up and down with the roller on the entire wall from top to bottom) and you haven't got that bit of pressure on the paint extension handle to keep out the lines. Also, with the lines, it could be a cheap and nasty roller. Maybe re-watch the video on rolling more closely. Don't be too hard on yourself, painting isn't all that easy in the beginning, it does take time to master it, (several years in fact). If all else fails, you may be able to just touch up with a brush but this works best with the right kind of paint, flat paint if that's what you're using. If it has any sheen at all, it won't blend in too well. Good luck

The side of the roller that's open has less pressure naturally than the other side with the metal bar. So overlapping slightly over the side using the open-end roller part also helps

I’ve painted a wall with good grade satin water base Pittsburgh paint and it shows ‘streaking’, not consistent. I tried rerolling, then a paint brush, but it keeps getting worse. It’s on a stairway so it’s a bit hard. Ideas?

Sorry Ron, without actually being there, it's impossible to say why. It can be a variety of reasons, what are you painting over, paint too thick or too thin, rolling way too slow on a hot day and it can be the paint itself, i'm not familiar with Pittsburgh paints.

John Spencer It’s been a long time since I made this video but I think I used an oil base all purpose undercoat in this. But seriously, you could simply use the wall paint for your undercoat, it would work just as well. Just make sure you give it time to completely dry. Easy as mate, and happy painting 👍

No, it's not necessary. Just go over it with your wall paint.

Rick we just had nail pops patched at our 1 yr walkthrough. The original wall paint was sprayed on vs rolled. We will need to sand down the patches a bit but will a mini roller work fine to go over them? (will the new paint look different or be noticeable, as it won’t be sprayed on?)

the wet paint can reactivate the plaster and brush marks will stay on the plaster even after rolling. use the roller or mini roller

You have presented a good alternative in spot priming with brush but however, it won’t work with an eggshell. Eggshell sheen has a little bit more shine then satin so looking at it from the front isn’t the issue, it’s when you look from the sides is when you get screwed by master painters or home owners or by contractors who do inspection. What happens is that you get a sheen build up so at the end it looks flashy. It’s even worse when you are using clover dale paint products(which are organic). Sherwins A-100, pro mar 400, pro mar 200 have these same problem when spot priming. What I do as an alternative is with my roller I roll a full from top to bottom vertical strip sections where I have patches. Then I do a full roll and spot primes won’t flash or telegraph through. But you idea is good as well.

Daniel Rocha Sorry, I have to disagree mate. I know exactly what your saying but the trick is in the amount of drying time. Eggshell, low sheen, anything with a sheen needs enough drying time or you will get that sheen you're talking about. There are other factors, the type of paint you're painting over, humidity in the air, etc but it can be done. I should know, I've done it 1000s of times and it works for me.

Your channel has been a big help to me Rick, your directions are simple and clear. I have a question though, what do you mean by "undercoat"? Is that primer?

Big smiles here! Thanks for the nice comment Mike. Ok, undercoat. Generally speaking, undercoat, from the old days was an oil base paint called, All purpose undercoat (or general purpose) This allowed subsequent coats of enamel to sit on top of the surface and 'flow'. With out undercoat (of some kind) this would not be possible. In this video I used just that, all purpose undercoat (oil base). You could get away with using just the wall paint in this case. It's simple used to prevent the previous paint edge from curling up. What ever you use, let it dry and then give a light sand before patching. Primer in the old days was sort of like an undercoat but primer on wood was different, thinner and not sure what it was made from but still cleaned up using thinner or turps. Undercoat was applied after primer. Both primers and undercoats with the water base technologies now adays, aren't really needed anymore. And yes, some think primer and undercoats are one and the same, they are not. Happy painting mate. :)

I have filled some small areas and filled with with Polyfilla and sanded them all. If I understand correctly I do not need to apply a mist coat or primer - I can just paint over them with a brush, using the wall paint, stipple it out, leave it to dry and then roll the wall as normal?

You have too patch over the poorly sanded patches that have been painted over then sand smooth it's all about tricking the eye

This would of been a water base 'low sheen' acrylic by Dulux. Brand is not so important as the quality of paint. Most brands make good paint. All the best

hi. i have a similar issue to the wall decal except they ripped off overhead cupboards side panels that took adjoining paint off. the bare set plaster is smooth underneath so should i just oil based sealer binder undercoat it (as its plaster based) then begin with the patching and smoothing? the only issue is given the patch is now flat with existing paint once you liberally apply paint the area is one layer higher when i have done this elsewhere? so once rolling over the whole wall wouldnt the patched area still stand out alot as it still has an extra paint layer over it before you rolled?? in my case with my overhead cupboards can i get away with fixing the patched and pulled away paint without rolling and redoing the rest of the wall? i had only just painted the wall so it's not like id planned to paint the rest of the wall around the patch anyway. some pictures. would appreciate feedback : 20170725_084804.jpg drive.google.com/file/d/0B-g...w?usp=drivesdk 20170724_005115.jpg drive.google.com/file/d/0B-g...w?usp=drivesdk 20170724_005132.jpg drive.google.com/file/d/0B-g...w?usp=drivesdk

Hi Veneros. The sealer binder certainly can't hurt. Don't know exactly without being there looking at it, and your jpeg urls aren't coming through. It's pretty tough to make patches disappear. If you follow the video above you should get some fairly good results.I always do. And most of the time, you're not going to get away with just spot painting over the patches. You can, but it depends on the type and brand of paint you are using. Better to figure on painting the whole wall after you patch. Make sure you go over your patches too with a coat of paint, after you sand them and before you paint entire wall. Good luck mate

Howdy Ensan, the undercoat used in this video was simply an oil base general purpose undercoat. I had it in my van and the time to allow for it to dry. However, you can simply get away with the wall paint. Almost anything will work in this case. It's so the edges of the old paint don't curl up too bad.

Hi Nick, it sounds like the patches didn't receive a coat of wall paint before painting the entire walls. I can't see the wall but you may get away with just painting the wall again. It's too late to prime the patches, but the coat of paint you've already used on the walls will have to suffice as your primer coat on your patches! Sorry, but it pays to do it right from the start. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by 'flashing'. Again I have to assume some things here. If you did prime over the patches with whatever, the subsequent coat of wall paint may just be appearing differently because of it. It's why I just use wall paint for primer/undercoat. So I guess Nick, just apply another coat of paint and it may very well resolve your little problem. Good luck

You may have a lot of sanding to do (and patching) or you may be able to re-patch over them? Hard to say without actually seeing it.

Sounds like the surface is in need of dire prep work before any paint is applied. Without being there, I can't ascertain what needs to be done but you may have a bit of scraping to do with a first coat of a sealer binder (oil base) good luck.

Are you trying to put acrylic paint over an oil-based paint - that'll make the under layers peel off.

You could always just go without the rolling. It all depends on what kind of paint you're using and what amount of quality you want to put into it. With flat paints in particular, you most likely will get away without rolling if you use the same paint that is on your wall.

Brandon Martinez I don’t have luck when I do it that way. That’s why I was looking for a different way on here because last time I patched, primed the whole wall and then painted.. you could see the texture difference at certain angles where the patching was. The wall that I’m doing now is going to have a light shining on it. 🤦🏼‍♀️ LOL. So I want to see what else I can do to avoid the texture difference. I don’t want to skim the whole wall.. 😂

Unfortunately, you have extra scraping/sanding to do before painting I'm afraid. You may even have to undercoat and lightly patch (and sand again) before proceeding with your painting. Good luck

Sand the hell out of it patch right over them a little bit bigger this time and take all of the mud off it's called skim coating do it twice then sand. Take all of the mud back off the knife is flat and will fill the low areas in

I decided to renovate my front door that was, in places cracked. I filled, waited to dry and sanded back. Using an electric sandpapered and took it back to almost the bear wood which was smooth. I gave it two coats of undercoat, lightly sanding between coats. Two top coats with the final coat third coat watered down. All my hard work and it has dried patchy. Where did I go wrong please and, can it be rectified? Many thanks

Helen Mclean well first, sorry bout all your hard efforts failing. Sole destroying to some degree I’m sure. There are so many things that could be wrong here but I’m not going to go over those. Would be even more confusing than beneficial. Rather, let me provide what I think may be a solution? You’ll never need 2 coats of under coat and in most cases, 2 coats is also all you should ever need to paint almost anything from start to finish. Try this, let the paint already on your door cure. Say, about a week. Give it a light sand (not the electric sander!) and apply 1 coat of your finish paint. I think this will solve your issue. All the best 🙂

Ouch! It's why I always say, "Do it right the first time!" Unfortunately for you, (I feel for you) you have more work to do to bring it right. You literally have to scrape sand gauge or whatever it takes to knock back the proud ugly patch and re-patch and paint. I 've seen this sort of thing a thousand times over. Lots of cowboys and people who either don't know or don't care how they get the job done.

This is my first time painting, where I live my house is build out of concrete blocks and the walls are painted with oil based paint. When we moved in the painters did not do a good job of painting and I would like to fix the imperfections correctly and then paint over with water based paint. How should I proceed in fixing it?

Ok, we have a starting point. 👌To change the system from oil to water base paint, sand the surfaces to be painted, apply one coat (one coat is all you need) of oil base ‘all purpose’ undercoat, sand lightly and apply your coats of water base over that. Best of luck

Whether you use a brush or a roller to blend ends up being a matter of preference. I always had small roller covers on hand. The nap on them ranged from very thin to heavy and thick. So while a brush can work, it's not a one size fits all remedy. Some repaired surfaces have a few coats of paint to blend, other surfaces might have 15. The best repairs are invisible.

No, not technically. But for the stippling (texture) it works much better. In cases such as this, I simply use the wall paint. Works a treat

I like satin paint because it's washable, and my sister told me that satin shows every little imperfection and to use a 'flat latex paint', what is your opinion & what paint did you use? I think maybe I'll hang a large mirror there & just leave it when I sell my house.

That's a tricky one and an issue that can have so many different variables. Cheap paint, not enough drying time between coats, no first coat etc.

Not being there makes it a lot harder to come up with the correct solution but lets give it a stab. Please bare in mind, I don't know what kind of paint is on the wall, whats material is behind the paint etc. Scrape off all loose paint. You may need to sand the entire area, mainly to knock off any loose paint and smooth edges. Use an oil base sealer/binder. Do your patching and continue as in the video. You may get away with just using your wall paint as your first coat, but like I mentioned, not being there and seeing it first hand makes it difficult. Good luck :)

The plaster on the ceiling is not hiding so well, because it seems to slightly expand after I apply primer or paint but not before.....also

I've painted the interior of our home a few times, and do a pretty good job using the same methods you do, and I even taught myself how to cut in without taping off...I'm horrible at that, so just take my time and use a piece of cardboard to slide down the edge where I'm painting. What I haven't seen you address yet, and maybe I missed it in another video, is how you cut in around baseboard and crown moulding. I see you using the roller in this video, and it is obviously touching both top and bottom. Is this because you know you're going to go back and paint the trims later? The way I've done it is to roll the paint no closer than 2 inches from trim, but it looks like you're not stopping at all. So how do you do it??? Thanks in advance for your reply. This is an old video, so I hope you're still answering questions!

Hi Mary, yes I still do comment. :) Where it appears I'm touching both top and bottom, I'm not. I guess it's because I've done it for so long, I just miss the top and bottom. If you look at the video a tad closer (where I'm rolling the walls) you'll just make out the slight difference in the paint and you will see that is in fact already cut in. Without being there and having a look it's almost impossible to tell you how to fix it. Having painted over your patches has most likely made it a tad more difficult to fix also. I can only guess that maybe you didn't sand well enough, no first coat as primer, no stipple effect with brush etc. It all plays a part in making them disappear. Also, I don't know what kind of surface you painted over.
