Making your synths pop with the channel strip is the subject of this Cubase secrets with Dom video. The channel strip in Cubase can be used to really make your synths stand out, adding warmth to a track, saturation and harmonics to your synthesizer tracks. Dom’s music production tricks will show you how to achieve this using the channel strip in Cubase without opening any plug-ins. Looking at just the synths in the Cubase mixconsole for a clearer workflow, Dom takes care of the EQ, compression, tape saturation, filtering, envelope and more - all in the channel strip. Producing synths in this way, without needing to reach for plug-ins, will help to add true character to your synthesizer music.
We hope you find this video entertaining and useful. If you like what you see, please leave a comment and tell us what you think. Thank you.

I was just going through mixing my new synthwave track and this video helps a lot! I think I'm gonna create a new snapshot and give the mix a go with 0 plugins, and use only the strip channel.

Hi Dom, For Cubase newbies like myself, it would be helpful if you could make your mouse pointer a little larger and also tell us what you're clicking on as you pop open the different Cubase windows. Your content, knowledge and Cubase educational value are great. However, I have trouble following it sometimes as I watch and try to figure out how you navigated to where you are, then I lose focus of the material bring presented, then I have to rewind and replay to get back into the subject matter again. Thanks so very much for sharing your Cubase DAW, compositional, and production knowledge. Having come from the analog days, I know there's a headlight switch, it's just a matter of finding it on the dash so I can turn the lights on : ) Regards . . .

Great Dom. I never used Channel Strip. What is the difference between using it or inserting plugins in every track ? When to use one or the other ?

Hi Dom, I really like your Cubase channel, as i,m a beginner on Cubase 10 that i got free with my Steinberg UR22 MK2, but i have not got it working properly yet as the ASIO drivers keep dropping out, so if you could give me some pointers about my settings that would be great, also here is a challenge to see if you could replicate the sound of the Tenor sax solo on Hungry Eyes from Dirty Dancing 1987 which i only recently found out that its not a Tenor Sax being played at all, it's a Synth.

Great video thanks Dom. Just a question : Is the channel strip better for CPU vs adding plugins ?
@WilliamMorrisMusic
@WilliamMorrisMusic 3 жыл бұрын
I think this is going to depend on which plugins you are adding, some 3rd party plugins are very CPU efficient, others are real hogs. Why not set-up an experiment?
@mirzaaljic
@mirzaaljic 3 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking that channel strip will most likely be less taxing on the CPU because it's already part of the Cubase processing, whereas a 3rd party plugin is a separate process altogether.

Isn't everything in the channel strip also a plug-in? I think there's a trade-off: ease of use/accessibility and not using insert slots vs being restricted to a small number of plug-ins.

I enjoy these video's as they are very informative. But I rarely hear big differences when settings are adjusted, sadly...Yes I hear the bass slightly more dense, but I don't really hear how it is better or worse than before.

Try listening with headphones (as good as you can get) and your eyes closed. Concentrate your listening on specific instruments and frequencies eg low end only. You have to train your hearing. Good luck!

i hear ya, sometimes it's the youtube algos on the video's or you're getting old, like me, and your hearing, especially on the high end of the spectrum, is diminishing...

That's due to the KZfaq audio compression, that you won't hear any differences. It's with so many other audio channels the same. However, you should always test those settings Dom presented by going to the extreme values to understand, what it changes sonically. Then you realize what to look out for and how to use it in your mixes.

You make quality content, but making important sound decisions in solo though.. yikes. That is setting a wrong example and will actually prevent people from achieving a nice mix.
