Hey guys, in today's episode I wanted to show you a great trick on how to turn PortKeys Leye Sdi viewfinder into a super professional tool by combining it with Z-finder from Zacuto.

Wow thank you so much for this - my port keys EVF has been sitting on the shelf for a year - I actually have an old Zacuto eye piece somewhere so am excited to try this

Hello thanks so much for the great video. Besides converting the EVF I'm also wondering about the SmallRig monitor mount that you have in 0:48 - 0:53 in the video. It looks like the Hawklock mount but it also has large twisting knobs on the side to adjust tension. Did you modify that mount yourself with small knobs or is there a version that comes like this with the knobs? The "normal" hawklock mount does not seem to come with knobs. Any info would be appreciated!

Hi Adam. For some users who used Zacuto 3X on Canon cameras, due to the high magnification, the pixels of the monitor screen are visible in the frame. Please tell me what the magnification of the eyepiece is on your Zacuto Z-Finder model and what the situation is with the pixels on the Portkeys Leye SDI.

I use the Z-cam EVF. Didn't consider the Portkeys one because of it's low quality. But this mod is great.

@@mseFilmit's not really square, because I have the waveform enabled in the bottom half of the image. So the video image really is 16:9.

Hey there, great modification. Thanks a lot for suggesting it. Does it (the 3D blueprint etc.) work with the standard LEYE version as well. To be honest I don't even know whether the standard LEYE version has all of the issues of the SDI version ... Best wishes

Hey, I didn't have the standard version, but from the photos it looks like it's exactly the same but without the SDI port, so I'm 99% sure that this modification will also work in this version.

I didn't bother pulling the tape. I just used an exacto blade to cut it.

Do you happen to know a way around the issue of using a view finder with glasses?

I honestly didn't try it because I don't actually wear it, but I believe the diopter is helpful in this case. I know a lot of operators who wear glasses, and I think most of them just take them off while looking at the viewfinder.

I use glasses and most diopters resolve any issue on this.

I did this modification and am i the only one that noticed the LEYE display being laggy for a lake of a better term? Maybe i mean refresh rate? Im hoping there is some setting issue? I will say i was pulling from my teradek bolt 500 xt's sdi port, but it transmitted to my smallhd monitor with no issue.

Hi friend, could you tell me your camera model and whether LEYE SDI has lag display if your camera is connected to LEYE SDI directly?

I did this mod back in July and it works great but working in the sun is very risky if you are not careful. I was shooting a short film on a blistering day in August and it was very hectic which meant I was not thinking about the sun's position... on several occasions, the sun entered the viewfinder, the Zacuto is very powerful and this resulted in the LED screen getting burnt several times! Still just about usable but very annoying and distracting, I have been looking into replacing the LED but cannot find any options.

For the record, this behavior isn't limited to this mod. Every evf and viewfinder loupe I've ever used has always warned against direct sun exposure into the eyepiece. It's a common concern across all viewfinders/evfs. You need to cover the viewfinder when not in use.
