In the 60’s, my parents bought a 300 year old shell of a house in the center of France. One room( 27 sq meters or about 300 sq feet), one lean-to and one detached workshop on 3,500m sq of land. We had 3 months to move in. Being teenagers, Dad « hired » us while Mom took care of food, laundry, garden, etc. Dad loved his old workshop and it came very handy. We tore down the old chimney out of the rock wall and rebuilt a safe one and installed a fuel oil stove immediately. The rock wall had two walls of rocks with straw inside. We were hoping to find gold coins but we only found …more work! We changed the windows. We had the salpêtre in the walls like you have. We installed a partition that did not touch the walls to let the air circulate behind it. That was fast. At the same time we tore down the lean-to and built a cement block building divided into a kitchen and bathroom. We dug the ground for the pipes, built the walls and roof, installed the electricity, laid the tile floor, installed a shower, etc. By the first frost we were in. We ate in the kitchen and it was so small that once we sat at the table, we could reach everything: Mom had the stove side; Dad had the pantry; my brother had the silverware and dishes and I had the fridge. We had 3 beds in the big room, a buffet and a dining room table/desk. We lived that way for years as we were poor as church mice, but my Mom had the best attitude and would say: we are warm; we have nice food and we have each other. What else do we need? I loved falling asleep listening to my Dad’s soft snoring while watching the flame in the stove. I was loved and safe. My parents died in 2014 and then my brother. I admire them more now that I’m older myself. They taught us solid values and love. I no longer live there. So you see, your project resounds with me. I’ve learned a lot from you two and I wish I had known some of your skills when I was 15. So I will continue to admire you from afar. Lise.

I have worked my entire life and not quite sure what to do with my new found hours at rest. Your videos enable me to join your journey, laughs, and frustrations. I get to be there as you both work and hope to share your joy when completed. I guess this is my poor attempt at explaining why I watch, and just how glad I am that you chose to chronicle you progress. You both are so special, funny, and hard workers. Any way, thanks and I will be watching

Seventeen years ago we bought a plot of land in Spain with no idea what we would do. For 6 years we lived in a little wooden chalet, no water, no electricity, no mod cons. Six of the best years ever. We finally built a beautiful, modern house . One year ago at the ripe old age of 73 we took on another huge project. We bought an old house that hadn't been lived in for over 20 years. We are slowly & lovingly bringing the house & land back to life. It keeps us going & each day is a joy. So, we relate to everything you two are doing, and you are an inspiration to anyone doing a renovation. Your attention to detail reminds us of our build, but this time we can work with what we've got & maintain the beauty of this little Spanish house. Love to you both, and rest now & then ❤️❤️

Every time I watch your videos I relate so strongly with what you are saying. Keeping busy; having challenging projects; accepting that there will be good days and not so good days; these are all things my husband and I really understand. We retired and traveled a bit and then realized that what we missed was having goals. Traveling is nice, but it isn't a goal. You are working towards a goal and part of that journey involves the really fun parts of dreaming what it will turn out to look like and problem solving how to move in that direction. It's what will keep you healthy and strong. Learning, problem solving and goals...the stuff of life. Thank you for these wonderful videos and for sharing this journey.

Six years ago, for my retirement project, I put my mare, Molly in foal. She had a beautiful filly that I named Grace who is a mini version of her mum. Same colour, same markings but a bit smaller. Little Grace is now 5 years old. My two mares, take up all my time and all my money but I wouldn’t have it any other way. There is no more joy in life than being passionate about what you’re doing. For me it’s horses and for you it’s renovations. I think the two of you are amazing. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when in the recap video during the first house tour Kylie said the upstairs wouldn't need much work. But that's the thing with old building, you never know what you'll find by just looking at the surface and if it's a house you really love it's worth doing it right. My parents were both architects and they bought a large farmhouse which was build in 1765. It was in such a bad shape that when you stood in the ground floor kitchen you could see the sky through the upper floor and the roof. It took year to renovate but the end result was absolutely stunning.

We viewers may sometimes think that progress is slow, but you are doing almost all the work yourselves, you have your gardens and their produce to deal with daily, and you have online enterprises that make this whole project financially possible. And because this is your "forever house", you are doing all the tasks the right way, not the quick way. I especially appreciate your ability to smile at the successes and laugh at the things that didn't go so well, perhaps over a glass or three of your homemade wine.

Hi Both. Your house is looking amazing even if to you it seems like a bombshell and is a bit overwhelming right now. Re the temporary shower inside upstairs. That's a bad idea in my view. Water is high risk on a second floor and you'll have a lot to consider to keep what's underneath safe So do not rush it. You may even need to "tank" the floor and part of the walls to keep water contained. To that end I would simply progress the demolition and rebuild on your mid term project plan and not do anything temporary up there. To get out of the outside shower (which at the time you built it, I was thinking would be a short term folly), I'd go with a prebuilt purpose built building you can bring on site. think caravan you only use as a bathroom/shower, or ex toilet block from a building site in a 10-foot container etc. Park it on site, wrap it with insolation and have hot running water (off gas bottles if needed). Then progress with your plan to sleep in the house in the partly finished living room. This approach should simplify your inside workflow somewhat with the trade off of extra tasks to find and bring to site the toilet structure not having the same dependency cross overs you expressed on this video. Something to mull over. I am sure you'll find a solution that is right for you both. Take care D

Great idea. If the Donga is purchased rather than hired you can repurpose it later on for say wwoofers or holiday makers (or family) to stay in. You can always disguise the Donga with wood pergolas (grapes, wisteria etc), stone patios and concrete planters ie pig troughs...
@MAKEDOGROW

The shower won’t be temporary, it’ll be the final one including all tanking etc. Because of the way we’ll be laying out the bathroom it can go in before the other components Regarding your other suggestions… there’s no access into the property for anything like that. We’ve considered all the alternatives multiple times 😀

Just had another thought for your shower. Turn your half bath into a wetbath. Since the toilet needs to be plumbed, anyway, e plumber can also put a drain in the floor for showering. You can either run lines to provide water through a conventional fixture or, as with the kitchen, get a handheld and attach it to the bathroom sink when needed...😊

At the end of 2019 we took on a fully functioning house (albeit fugly) and 10 overgrown acres here in NZ, the elderly people before us no longer had the means or strength to upkeep it and the task ahead was daunting, it had been in the market for 10 years because I feel people took one look and thought, nope, too much work. We have done nothing inside our house but instead concentrated on the foundations of a great outside, painting the exterior, the roof alone was 3 different colours,a complete overhaul of the granny flat both inside and out, a new pool, a new huge shed for our business and a major tidy up of tree canopies, fencing, rubbish removal, garden revamp. We’re in our 60’s and fortunate to have been able to buy machinery as we’ve progressed to help, plus have fugly comfort at least to live in. I have only just found and subscribed to your channel after seeing your time lapse , but watching you hand dig the French drain, I was in awe of your work ethic, I know how much a garden alone takes to maintain, but to be doing this living in a tent through all seasons and get to where you have got without the big guns, my hat goes off to you. I love how everything we complete reduces a major job to a maintenance programme, and in some cases, a maintenance free area. Your home will be beautiful once completed, and you have the time to create something wonderful, so go at your own pace, keep it a blessing not a burden. I disliked our home when we purchased it, we bought it because of position and amenities for the business, but the more we do, the more I fall in love.

Soooo...if you want to get in the house by winter, I'm thinking you have to focus your time on two rooms: utility with bathroom and kitchen. Not everything in either needs to be completed in order to start living there. The big things are plumbing and electric. You can set up a bed in either room, temporarily. You can insulate doors you're not using for daily entrances/exits to keep those spaces warm. Put in the sub floor over the kitchen so you can work upstairs if needed without things dropping through the kitchen ceiling. Shower: not really an issue. When you install a kitchen sink, pick up a hand held shower head that you can connect to the hot/cold water. Then, buy a plastic kid's pool (or something like that), put hooks in the ceiling to hang a shower curtain, and you can use a shower there. When finished, pool can be emptied (I'd recommend a drain tube and small pump to empty it out the door or window), and accessories can go into the empty pool and everything can be stowed in the living room. So, I'm thinking you should hire a plumber and an electrician to take care of those needs first. Without those projects, I foresee outdoor showers through the winter and continuing to live in the tent.

You have an amazing property and you're doing things properly. I've been working on putting a 100 old building back together for 20 years. Every year it gets more beautifuil, more comfortable. But it takes time. We can see that you're enjoying the process and the building is much better for your efforts. I think there's always a point in the middle of a building project where you think it's never going to get finished. But it does. And yes, hind sight is 20/20, but foresight is well ... close to 20/200. In case misery loves company ... I am on my 3rd year of restoring 14 windows. Not a big job, I said to myself. Then in August I vowed, the upstairs WILL get done this winter. Then I realized that this involves stripping and painting woodwork on a window in one bedroom. But the radiator (removed, stripped, and painted 5 years ago) is in front of the windows in that room (why didn't I do the trim when the radiators were out ... don't recall now, but there surely was a good reason). So after a bout of COVID, I have the heating system drained and the radiator disconnected and moved in late September. Surely a month is enough time to strip and paint woodwork on 2 windows. But as fate (and old buildings) would have it, what I thought would be just a few small plaster repairs around the windows led to the realization that yet again 100 year old plaster parged onto a brick wall does eventually deteriorate. Let's just say that it's nearly November, the wall is stripped down to the brick, there is a good deal of pointing to be done, then 2 inches of plaster to build back up, plus stripping and painting the wood work. Oh, and there's the angst of "do I try to do lime plaster and wait months for it to cure or use gypsum since the wall was coated with bitumin anyway when the building was constructed" so the original builder already messed up the moisture permeability and I'll end up using latex paint anyway, so why go to the bother and expense". And the amateur learning time ... are there alternatives to white glue to use to get any type of plaster to bind to the old bitumin. And oops, some of the bitumin is not really adhering well any more, so the entire wall needs to be scraped (and cleaned) before anything can really proceed. ... but eventually, it will be done and it will be done well. I know this because I've already done this in several other rooms. So you'd think I would have known that the entire wall would end up having to be redone. But even with hind sight, hope springs eternal and foresight ends up being 20/150 at best. You guys are doing brillantly and it will be done and done properly and you're making bad wine and really good beer and growing grand vegetables and laughing. What can be better than this?

Guy and Kylie, hate to break it to you, but its not your house, its the make do grow house :p As your viewers, watching you work hard and harder every week, it kind of feels like we are doing some of the work through you. Sometimes I sigh after watching a video, almost as if my body is releasing all the tension and tiredness after plastering LOL. I honestly feel so involved and invested despite not lifting a finger. Sometimes I pat myself on the back, eg when the outside moat was being dug or when the sanding of the beams was finished, almost to say to myself 'well done, that was a lot of hard work there!' haha. Thanks for taking us on your journey, we live vicariously through your hard work.

The renovation process is challenging at a minimum. I am presently working on my Mother’s home. So I truly do appreciate the plight of “can’t do this until that is done”. But like you humor and patience is key to keeping the project going. 😊

Good on you! THis was another great video, feauring possibilities but espe ially, your wonderful humor and wit and dynamic. What about making the stone wall feature (in the cave/lounge) arch-chaped instead of rectangular? Might add some extra interest and beauty to have a curve, especially in a smallish space without any windows ... which reminds me, will you have any windows anywhere downstairs? (Perhaps in your doors?) Gratitude for your journey!

Replace the pole with a chestnut beam, or boxed with chestnut, it is beautiful. For old age (which I don't recommend) better plan on a down stairs shower. %-]

I completely understand your situation in not being able to find workers that are not only free to do the work, but are willing to do it in our quirky way. So yes, we are doing it all just the two of us and no, it is not done yet and we are now in our 70s... But you'll be done (-ish) by that age and enjoying your beautiful home. Like you, we have just installed a second toilet so that we can take out the existing toilet and put in the floor in the other bathroom. Your new toilet will be quite a bit more private, as ours only has framing for walls and no walls as such... but, as I said, it's just the two of us! 😂

The one wall that is finished looks really nice and smooth. It’s going to look really nice. You both have this ideas and plan what you want and how it’s going to be done. If these local builders won’t work with these traditional materials then I can see why you are doing this all on your own.

You guys! What a great video. Seriously. Thank you for showing the lay out of your place and your work vision so to speak. It’s a many layered thing to say the least! Thank god you both have a good sense of humour as that so often can propels you forward in your daily act of “doings”. Defiantly challenging & rewarding work you’ve set yourself up for and I’m glad I’m along for the ride. A video on your outdoor ideas would be be spot on. You both have great vision.

You guys are doing it right. You are saving a gem and doing it right. That place will live-on another hundred years easy when you're done. Happy to see it's not breaking your spirit and that you're still enjoying the work and keeping the vision. I couldn't do three-years in a tent, so more power to you both. Looking forward to many years of progress vlogs. Thanx.

Nothing wrong with having a good cry. It seemed to me at those times, that it was the lowest I could go/felt yet immediately after, just continued to slog on. Acceptance of a low point, means there is only 'up' from it. You two are fabulous, hard working, clever and getting more clever. Glad you believe in the project, because you are right, it will be worth it. Best wishes.

May I suggest that you make a provision for a single person internal lift between two floors. Your budget may stretch to cover the cost although they are not cheap, Reason I suggest that is that I suspect you will likely stay in that house and into old age when walking up and down stairs may become problematic. If nothing else, just reserve an area for this as possible future installation.

Come on guys, you are doing terrific. You’re an incredible inspiration to those who are perfectionists and love high quality workmanship. I said that before here. The kind of thing you’re doing is not for the faint hearted. I, like many and like yourselves, can’t wait to see the end product, but then, when it ends, can you please go about to find another house to do up? We’re going to go through terrible withdrawal symptoms. However, knowing you now, I think this project will still give us a lot to see and admire. Keep going, cry when and if you have to, but please get up, look around your surroundings, give yourselves a good pat on your backs, have a sip of your lovely drinks, savour your amazing veggies and we will continue to love it and you. I totally love your work.

What a lovely comment, thank you 😍 To put your future withdrawal symptoms at ease, here’s a list of future build projects (some definite, some still ideas) …. carport/storage building (needs planning permission and a proper builder), total renovation of the outbuildings which has a bigger footprint than the house (will become an outdoor kitchen, brewery/processing kitchen, storage and workshop), greenhouse, new composting system, and lots of other smaller outdoor projects. I don’t think there will be a shortage of videos 😀

We have the endless debate of one room at a time over bigger projects! You'll find a way to move in, and it will be worth it to keep warm this winter... don't worry too much about the finishings and just get in as soon as you can. Finding builders who will use natural products has been impossible here too and I hate the compromises we have had to make on some things to get ahead. Next we are planning on doing it ourselves but with work commitments too it won't be easy. What was the protective opening you put on the room downstairs and the front door? That looks very useful...
