I feel like alot of this boils down to perfect application. Spinning the water helps it dissolve the carbon dioxide, bamboo is better at handling interior expansive forces then clay, airtight pressure fitting can be achieved with wet leather, ect. As well, senku cola has the basic flavor profile down but the issue is quantity, which they don't mention. And senku has immense intellect and memory, so he likely has the proportions correct. It would take a fair amount of experimentation to achieve the flavor profile for us normal, nongenius folk. Also, Gen hasn't had coke for over 3000 years (over a few months to his recollection); he likely doesn't remember how coke tastes, precisely, so anything that's cold, carbonated, and similar tasting to coke likely hit the craving just right.

Check it out!! I made senku cola right after watching this! Here's how I did it: I caramelized honey by heating it in a pot until bubbly and hot, then I added dried basil, and lastly, I added lime juice and mixed it all up! I used small quantities of each ingredient of course! Then I let the syrup cool then I strained it into a cup, mixed in the club soda then tried it....It was delicious!! A little bit sweet, but good! Maybe if I added more honey and a little bit more lime juice and kept the basil the same, it would taste more like cola. Anyway, I'd better improve on it!! Love you all!!!

when I tried the Dr Stone recipe I got it close, or at least recognizeable as a Cola drink. I suspect while Senku said all you need is honey, cilantro, and lime, that this is the minimum requirements and that he actually added additional flavoring or spices assuming they could find it in rebooted Japan. When I tried it, I really had to mess with the ratios to get it to work too, it was very easy for the honey or lime to overpower the drink

I think this is more just about the limits of imagination. Like Dr. Stone generally got the theory of how to do these things right but without actually doing it there's many things you wont realize wont actually work. Like there's an element of craftsmanship to all of these things that you can't just replicate with pure book knowledge, it's similar to how The Martian generally has excellent science but I'm sure if you actually tried to do that in real life you'd quickly run into some sort of problem and die. You could probably get all of these things right in a fictional work however it would require like a Ph.Ds worth of research.

You should be able to get carbonation by using a bamboo container with a bung hole cut into it. Bamboo is going to be heaps stronger than that janky pot you made and is suitable for food grade containers. Just take a segment of bamboo, make a smallish hole in one end and use that to fill with your liquid. Add a little sugar to keep the fermentation going (assuming you have a ferment already), and then bung it up for a couple of days. You can either rely on pressure to pop the cork out, or just open it after a typical fermentation period e.g. 2-3 days at room temp. It works great for home made ginger beer. The only issue you have is making a container strong enough to hold 15-30 PSI of pressure.

@jerryborjon

@@guypie5479 - Let’s compare the two. For the wood mold you need: 1- A plank of the right shape. It NEEDS to be good wood. Not all wood can survive this for long enough. It probably needs to be dense wood, so good luck cutting it to shape with primitive tools. 2- Carve out the insides to the desired shape. Doing so in a way that doesn’t affect the integrity of the wood is hard _today._ Remember to take into account the shape and direction of the wood fibers with every cut. One wrong cut could break the entire thing in half very easily. 3- Prep it. Wood warps and expands greatly under heat, so you’re gonna need to account for that. It also needs to be dry so that the escaping gasses don’t affect the cast too much. You’re probably gonna need to put it in the oven to dry it. Good luck, since going too hot will burn it prematurely and too long will dry it too much and affect the integrity of the mold. You’re also probably gonna need to recarve the shape afterwards due to the warping from the heat. And after all of that, you get a one-time use mold that might not even survive once even after all of this work. Now let’s compare it to the rock mold: 1- Go to a river bank and find a concave rock. 2- Using a sharp rock, chip out the rest of the shape. 3- Put some packed dirt/gravel in it to smooth it out. And after that, you got a mold you can reuse. You could probably even smooth it out with another rock just by grinding it against the mold. The carving of the right shape would probably take longer, but the sheer amount of time the other steps save would definitely make up for that. It’s probably still infinitely better/faster/easier to just use clay, but I was just using a rock mold as an example to prove just how bad a wood mold is.
@guypie5479
@guypie5479 3 жыл бұрын
@@jerryborjon I am sorry you hate wood so much but you also don’t seem to know how wood works. I am not saying wood is the best mold in fact it is one of the worst working molds for both reusability and detail, but they are in fact easier and faster to make then most other molds. That is why they were used I guess it is more accurate to say that wood works great as an easy casting box when you just need a rough but usable simple shape. Also as a final remark wood in fact does not thermally expand greatly when heat for two reasons 1. Wood is a great thermal insulator that is why people make houses out of it and they don’t even need expansion joints 2. Wood basically does not expand at all when burning because the small expansion it does experience is counteracted my the loss in material and moisture. I don’t know if you have ever seen wood burn before but it does not really change much. In fact pure clay thermally expands more then wood and that is why you need more insulating filler in your pottery for it to work. Again my argument was never that wood was good it was that it was functional and fast knapping stone is not as easy as you might think and smoothing stone with sand can take hours. As for clay you have to find it processes it shape it and finally fire it before you can use it or you could get a hunk of wood take a couple of minutes to Hack in shape into it and just pour the metal in.

An engineer on youtube (whose name is leaving me) said that the spinning is to increase the pressure by constantly shaking the carbonic acid filled water. I also don't think it was meant to taste like coke but rather a generic "cola," similar to fox millet ramen. More of a "brings some comfort" thing than a "hey here's how you make coke at home" thing. I think that would have been something completely different. Nice video, maybe bamboo can be used in some future projects if you can get your hands on some.

Spinning, sealed container: This requires a greased bearing surface. To do this with bamboo, you would carve grooves for an anchoring site and use greased (w/ animal fat) twine and build it up with reverse half hitches. The outer chamber was probably made with wood discs at the ends and bamboo splits attached around it and sealed with resin or rice flour glue. It's possible with timber bamboo to get that size difference by just selecting your cuts, but the sealed bearing joint becomes more difficult

So glad he finally addressed Dr. Stone. Mortified that he watches Dubs. Various places online I have called out the manga and the show for a number of their stuff. Andy's absolutely correct about being PO'd about vision quality lens without all of the flux and annealing knowledge that goes into it. To be fair, Kaseki (little old bearded man) is depicted as a GOD Level master craftsman, and while you still have to suspend some level of disbelief; When you're an expert in a given medium, you're much better at working in it. e.g. some of the Stone carved jars of pre-dynastic Egypt and the middle east, would put all of Andy's glass, pottery, and masonry to shame. That being said, even with a research team, it's hard to know all the WAYS or potential ways to something and thus the best way to do it or the best available way. As Dr. Stone progresses, more and more of their scientific prowess is based on truisms and canards. I won't give away spoilers for folks that don't read the manga. So about Senku's design: gently shaking or turning the vessel greatly increases the surface area of interaction between water and gas, helping to speed up the process of carbonation. As Andy showed, this is not strictly "necessary" but it will in theory help to get better carbonation. Additionally, the Waterfall is acting to cool vessel which should also allow a greater level of carbonation. In Japanese, the pot is labeled "Sake" which means Andy was right about his method; another hint is Kaseki passed out sleeping happy in the grass. Anyway, with Senku's chemistry knowledge, and Chrome's mineral collection, he could have made more CO2 with sulfuric acid and calcium carbonate. You could say Senku was being lazy, but with a bunch of his inventions he's thinking several steps ahead and has plans for the ethanol. Andy is now doing the same things by reusing as much as his previously gathered materials and creations as possible. In order to help the general understanding, I think a couple of things for Andy's build should be noted as well: 1) Not All leather is equal. Cup Leather seals and gaskets are still used for a number of applications including drinking water ones to this day. 2) Note the direction of the seals and gaskets on the greater/ larger vessel and the liquid level. It's likely the vessel was using its internal weight and pressure to help seal. if that's the case, it's possible only 1 end needed a rotary gasket. 3) You can cast metals into wooden reliefs, doing it with molten iron from a bloomery is something nigh on miraculous. Big Takeaway here: I had no idea the dubs of Dr. Stone were that bad. LOL Okay but for real, remember this show is at least in part trying to encourage amateur scientists and engineers. I truly believe that the reason the cola invention and recipes is show by Gen, is because it's a guess at how it's made vs. a definitive statement by Senku. I really believe it was promoting people trying some of these things by themselves.

@@buckshott00 - What the hell are you talking about? _Subs_ are for when you don’t care about the art. Even as a fast reader, you still have to spend a large amount of time looking at the bottom 16th of the screen. It’s fine for when the characters are just standing there doing nothing (which is a lot of the time), but it’s immediately infinitely worse if the characters are actually doing something. It’s a catch-22. Do you wanna miss part of the action, or the text? Let’s hope they aren’t speaking over each other either. Saying all dubs are bad because SOME are flat is just brain-dead. For the good/decent ones (which most of them are), the amount of character the voices add are indispensable. If you don’t speak Japanese, you’re gonna miss out on most of the performance in subs. There are tons of subtleties you just don’t know because you don’t know the language, that most dubs re-add that for you to understand. Even if you *think* they’re bad, noticing SOME of the subtleties is better than noticing NONE of them. If I had a nickel for every time Americans thought a particular Japanese voiceover was good that Japanese-speakers hated (or vice versa), I’d be living on the moon. At their best, subs are as good as a bad dub. Most dubs are just superior to subs if you don’t know Japanese. If you do, you wouldn’t be watching either the sub or dub anyways.
