Knife making - Forging a Long Yakutian knife

Күн бұрынI'm not as happy as I could be with the hammered in groove on the knife as it could have been wider. I'll probably make another smaller one soon since I do like this style of knife.

Okay, a foot long Yakut knife is just too cool. I've been looking at a good many videos on making Yakut knives and this is, far and away, the biggest one I've seen. A job well done, sir.👍

이치고 the Siberian is implied since it is after all Yakutian. And the Yakutia don't live anywhere else other than in Siberia I've never heard of a yakut in Germany or China🤔 but who knows there's Lakota in Germany and Russia

Это нож хозяйственного назначения, длинной лезвия чуть шире ладони, он делается из доступной низкоуглеродистой стали, практически из железа, с минимальной закалкой, оттого мягкий. Именно по этому изготавливается с большим долом (вмятиной). Мягкость нужна что бы заточить о любой подножный камень, и на нем же его и выправить, если погнул при разделке оленя. Ручка делается костяной или деревянной, приплюснутой бочкообразной формы. Рукоять сделал правильно, но перестарался с закалкой и длинной.

рукоять делается всегда из капа березы и форма сечения всегда яйцевидная именно такая, никакой кости и бочкообразности!!! И не обязательно мягкой стали в большинстве случаев якуты предпочитают твердую сталь и остроту бритвы

Have you heard of Baotou Steel? Just like hamburgers, the three knives are combined into one. The outside two are soft and the middle one is hard. Then the clay is attached to the knife. The knife has higher strength, better toughness and is not easy to break.

Aka san mai, aka laminated steel. This generally does not actually result in any special properties unless special steels are used (given more modern heat treating methods, anyway), it was just a way to stretch good steel further.

the Yakutian knife is not only a form (shape), it is a one-sided hardening in a carbon donar (coal) from the convex side, which allows the knife to almost self-sharpen, like a beaver’s tooth

@@stephenpaez9038 the convex side is carbonized, and where there is a flat grinding, it is softer and it grinds during operation, so the knife remains sharp "beaver tooth effect". watch the video by the link, there it is in detail about it, only in Russian, try subtitles

Back to topic. I guess they temper back the hollow part a bit more to get it softer then. I read once that the traditional Yakut knife is not hardened to a particularly high HRC to make it easier to sharpen on the field.

Автор уверен , что клинок надо закаливать полностью , а не только режущую кромку ? Насколько помню форма клинка обусловлена в том числе и условиями эксплуатации при низких температурах и полная закалка только добавит ему хрупкости .

Закаливать надо полностью. Но смотрю и боюсь, что нож слишком тонкий, в ширину, для своей длины.

Да зоновая закалка используется, но также закаливают полностью, смотря от целей использования и пожелания заказчика

Really nice. When i saw the thumbnail i really thought it was a blade i made. Ive never had that before. I can always tell my blades from other smiths. Really eerie feeling lol.

What would be some injuries a blacksmith could get? Not the obvious ones, like burning bodyparts on hot steel, dropping /hitting hammer on body etc?

If the anvil is not at the proper height you can blow out your elbow and hurt your shoulder. The most common injury I’ve noticed is burning when taking hot material out of the forge, make sure you wear a good Kevlar glove on your tong hand and don’t leave it in front of the forge for too long.

I see you too use up that minwax trick. I just put a handle on the sword I've been making all summer. Honestly I'm so happy to have discovered this. Makes fitting the handle perfect 1000 times easier. As always wonderful video my fellow craftsmen love the way you chose to texture the knife! Quick question what kind of wood is on the Ends of the handle?

Why did you fit the tang to the handle before epoxying it? And why did you shape it before attaching it to the knife? Great video like always

Why stamp the maker mark when you are forging and risk grinding/hammering it out? I find that the best time to stamp it is while heat treating.

Есть разные гипотизы того как должен выглядеть якут. Услышав все, я склоняюсь к той где дол создаёт ребро жесткости, а обратная сторона не шлефуется и не обрабатывается вообще, тогда при каждой заточка оголяется закаленный край. Тут закаленный слой снят.

As far as i know its regular coal but in bigger size than regular blacksmithing coal

@@muledeerdude it is coal and it burns to coke (you can see it in some other videos when there is a lot of smoke from fresh coal) and since the pieces are so big, the burned coke lasts long

Ivan Kotora I disagree. It’s either a very low quality coal or it’s coke, and it looks more like coke to me. I’ve used both coal and coke quite a bit and I’d bet a fair amount that that is coke. I’ve seen basically all of his videos and I’ve never once seen his forge produce as much smoke as my coal forge. But, neither of us will actually know unless he answers, until then it’s all guessing, educated or not.

I like the Yakut design as well. I made a shorter stubby one and want try a narrower more ancient style. What is the weight of your hammer? Edit... Have you considered make a spring fuller to hammer in the groove?

Can't remember watch the video where I made it, I probably mention it there. I do have a spring fuller but I didn't wanna use it since the ball peen hammer is a bit more common.

That handle looks nice. Like it would be comfortable in your hand. What's it made of? Also, why did you put masking tape on the tang and then glue the handle on but then rip it off? Can you please explain?

I can't know for certain, but I assume he was using the epoxy to fill space in that drill holes in the wood. This would make for a better fit up.

It's a new technique that makes fitting handles like he said. I forgot the name of its origin but it was shared sometime this year by another youtuber. I just used it on my sword handle. To be truthful there is no better way to perfectly fit a handle.
