In Episode 2 of the Maker Hangar series, Lucas Weakley walks us through the motors used in R/C hobby aircraft, the propellers that go with these motors, and why their sizes matter. We learn about the differences between brushed and brushless motors, and why brushless motors are more prevalent in R/C aircraft. Then we learn about the importance of propeller choice in scratch builds, as Lucas teaches about the types of props, for example large diameter, shallow pitched props vs. small diameter with high pitches.

MAKE and Lucas Weakley have teamed up to bring you Maker Hangar, a 15-episode tutorial series that will teach you everything you need to know to build and fly this custom RC plane, the Maker Trainer.
New installments will air every Tuesday and Thursday through August. Also, be sure to join us on the Maker Hangar Google+ Community page to share your ideas, comments, photos and video and details for your own RC plane project builds: plus.google.co...

Lucas, you made some rather blanket statements about the motors. I understand cause they are a mysterious thing to most of us. The motor in your hairdryer or drill is (probably) a DC motor, AC passes through a bridge rectifier before hitting the motor. AC motors have a commutator and are NOT reversible. The motors used in the RC hobby are a special type of motor that is an AC like design but we run them on simulated AC from a PWM'd DC source.

1 volt = 3000 (on a 3000kv motor) if you put 10v it will spin to 30000 but speed at the end depends on propeller size., size can add or reduce torque and speed..

+Manikandan R It wont work, high kV motors are tiny and your prop wont fit on it and is your quadcopter 5kg? That is really heavy you'll need some big motors to lift that. Probably a 370kV motor with a 12-15 inch prop: www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__67031__Quanum_MT_Series_4108_370KV_Brushless_Multirotor_Motor_Built_by_DYS.html

@baldur3169 8 жыл бұрын
please use a brushless motor they are mush lighter and to answer your main question: if you look at some motors they will often say the thrust with a prop. if there is more thrust than weight then you can use it as a vtol. if you use more than one motor then you just ad the thrust together. hope this was usefull

@yangexue6596
@yangexue6596 6 жыл бұрын
Kuldeep Nikam you won't get much thrust. Use 1000kv motors with 10x4.5 inch props and 2200kv motors for 6x4 inch props. The 1000kv motor setup is more efficient and you will get more thrust.
@yangexue6596

And that's for 3s. For 2s batteries you need props that are bigger and for 4s you need smaller props. I mean a 2 inch difference.

I have to disagree with your early comments. While brushless motors are better in many ways, your statement that they are used the most is RC is not true. Can motors are far mor ubiquitous througout all areas of RC and I find brushless to be the exception. Of course, I am including all areas of RC (cars, boats, radio shack cheepos, etc.). However I do agree that for RC aviation aplications brushless are the best!

There are so so many technical innacuracies in your videos make. brushless motors are NOT AC. They are BLDC motor (brush less DIRECT CURRENT) motors. The input is DC not a square wave as you show. And the output is a 3 phase PWM modulated square wave.

Low kv + big prop = more thrust. For a three foot plane, try a 1800kv motor with an 8x4 prop. If there's not enough power you can try a second motor or get a new one.

This is a great video providing basic generalizations of different configurations. However.... @Tom Wilkinson You are 50% wrong here. Brushless motors are available in several different configurations.... •AC-Alternating Current •DC-Direct Current •ACs-Alt. Current Synchronous Brushless DC motors have similarities to ACs. The difference being ACs motors develop sinusoidal back electromagnetic frequencies. In comparison to rectangular or trapezoidal back electromagnetic frequency for the brushless DC motor variant. The misconception is 3 wires dont necessarily mean 3 PHASES. It is more likely 2 standard phases with 3 POLES. For Example a brushless DC, AC or ACs motor could have 4 or maybe even 6 different wires (wire color N/A), that doesnt mean its 3 phases, 2, 4, or 6 phases (unrealistic) it just means there are 2 phases of power (1, 3, 5, 7 or million wires) and every remaing wire after power (hot & neutral phases) is considered becomes individual poles. No different than a single, double, 3-way or 4-way light switch. There are 5 screws on a 4-way light switch if you count the ground screw. That doesnt mean you hook 3 phases of power to it. In the case of a 4way switch it means it can be controlled from 3 other locations at any given time dependent upon input by the user, or technology utilizing device. Also means it can control multiple devices from multiple locations allowing to activate said multiple devices in any configuration you wish, example: light and fan combo you can control power on or off to either one simultaneously and with the multiple poles several different devices can control the light and fan from any location the conductors (poles) are routed to. In the rc scenario, ac brushless is more commonplace. Due to the fact current from power source (battery) must first conduct electricity to to supplyn an ESC, FC, & RX or whatever setup you have, the power then exits as per command of ESC to what ever location requires power (as per input from user via TX). At the point power leaves esc, switch or whatever configuration you may have it becomes Alternating Current, due to the face power is not in direct path to device. DC motors can be utilized in an AC configuration. AC & ACs can be operated on DC too. Hence the indication on motors plate AC/DC INPUT. just have to be careful with DC power going into either configuration. Over voltage will melt winding coating in DC housing, and burn up stators in brushless AC or DC motors. Reason we use electronics before current to motor to eliminate hazards and damage. Have a great day.

Brushed motors have more torque and less speed? Wow that is totally inaccurate. Brushed motors tend to be more RPMs and less torque while brushless are lower RPM and more torque. That's why RC cars that were geared at 5:1 in the brushed motor days are now geared at 1.8:1 with brushless at about equivalent speeds. It is also an Electronic speed controler...not an Electric speed controller.
