No it doesn't come with a special pencil but the graphite from every pencil is usable

You can use any pencil, but a 6B works best!

@ItzJeff graphite (or commonly known as pencil lead) is a slightly conductive material, you may not be connected to Earth, though.

I would say that the pencil you used, may have not been the best. Also, make sure that the end of your pencil is not sharp, because you won't be able to get the thick layouts..
