Idk, the yellow bamboo thing would probably work on me. If the lady I was trying to mug started raising her arms in the air and chanting, standing still, completely confident she could take on a guy with a knife with nothing but her voodoo magic prowess, it would be fight or flight. Either I say, "oh hell nah I don't wanna be soul trapped and sent to the cairn", or "rush the spellcaster down before they finish the mantra". That's a 50% chance to work.

As a quick correction, electroshock therapy is NOT banned in the US. The specific article you brought up is relating to using an electroshock "treatment" (in quotes for the incredibly dubious nature of this) for behavioral modification, which is distinctively NOT electroshock therapy (ECT). ECT is an effective treatment for a number of mental health issues when other treatment options don't work. It isn't painful nor is it dangerous in the modern day.
