I hand forged two blacksmith hammers with no power tools. I make the first hammer in my indoor blacksmith shop and use that hammer to make the other hammer in my outdoor blacksmiths shop. Open the full video description for more information.
Use a single piece of spring steel - big leaf spring.
The hammer design was common in the viking age used by blacksmiths as a basic blacksmith hammer. Doing the viking age was the hammers made by folding and welding - not like I do it in the video from one single piece of tool steel. Archaeologists have found lots of hammers from the viking age - mainly the cross peen design I show in this video and dog head.
----------------------------
A few quick questions:
1. Do you sell?
No. Don't sell any thing.
2. What is the function of the pointy ears on the hammer head?
Makes more surface contact to the handle and that makes the handle lees likely to get loose. Also makes it possible to use a very thick wedge without the handle splitting or rejecting the wedge.
3. what is the dust you use on the hot steel?
Char coal dust - helps the punch not to get stuck.
4. What "power hammer" is that?
Treadle hammer. Here is a video only about the hammer • TREADLE HAMMER - HOW M...

I love the pedal powered mechanical power hammer. Really a great way to keep things feeling natural and free up your hands at the same time. The modern electrical power hammers are great, but not nearly as cool.

I think the coolest parts of this video to me are the leg-power-hammer and the way you hammered the handle into the second hammer head. The mass of the head was enough that you didn't need to rest it against anything to drive the handle in, and seeing that unfold was awesome!

The most satisfying blacksmithing video on youtube. I've seen it a dozen times over 3 years. If i were to choose one Master to apprentice as a blacksmith, it would be Bertram. No power tools and you get a free work out in the process. This video is a classic.

Would you consider adding some comments through subtitles (CC) to your videos? I know you don't want to distract from the beauty of slow-paced workmanship, but a just a couple of comments throughout the video could really add to the enjoyment. Most people will keep them off by default, but people could turn them on if they wanted to. For example, at 6:45 you could say what the material you're adding is, and what it does. Just a few words like "Salt, adds flavor" for those who are curious. Love your videos, they're a great escape in this crazy world.
