I dumped out some micro greens that didn't sprout in some non amended sand. I noticed raddishes starting to grow. When I pulled some out, I was shocked. One was 5lbs, 4lbs and 2 lbs. I have pictures or I probably wouldn't be believed. I used them in boiled greens like a turnip. Tasty.

Mark, For 12 years you hadn’t used fertilizers! That’s great! During the growing season, will you share more of what you’re growing commercially? One more question: I think I have mice in our home garden which is right next to the house. That puts me off edible gardening a bit. You said you don’t compost, what do you do with your garden ‘waste’?

This is new to me so thank you! To sum up....we plant that and leave it in the ground and it will decompose itself through the winter to help your soil for Spring/Summer planting? (In the mean time, pulling out some to cook/eat.)

We are 6b/7a....will use row covers....just ordered one pound. This has been a terrible summer for gardening, with the drought and the heat. Your optimism and reminder to keep it simple are inspiring.....hoping for improved conditions next year.

This isn't the first I've heard of a cover crop, but it is the first I've heard of radishes for that cover crop. I'll use that in my raised beds that have carrots, beets and salad greens where I didn't really think I wanted to plant winter rye. Thank you

Oh my gosh Mark. That is beautiful. Wish I had seen this when you posted it. Definitely on my list for next year. If I do the mixture of winter rye as you aluded to with these radishes, it seems to me the radish would probably sprout sooner than the rye and then kill off in the freezing weather leaving the green rye growing until spring for a second deposit of greens along with still more roots. You agree?

2:11 this is brilliant! what time of year do you sow them? I have a couple of pounds to plant. It’s end of August now. My first frost date is mid October. Last year it was beginning of December. Harvested the last cherry tomatoes on 13. December. When would you plant the daikon radish to harvest seeds?

Hi mark, I keep hearing you say that we need a living root in the ground, And to use cover crops to do that. Doesn't the crabgrass that grow all winter in my area attract Mycorrhizal? In other words, why doesn't the grass do the same thing that cover crops do?
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Жыл бұрын
THANK YOU for asking. it's a sedge (a flowering plant to resembles grass). It looks like grass until it grows tall enough to sprout a seed head. It also has a triangular shape. Unlike nutsedge, crabgrass is an annual plant. Crabgrass does not grow Mycorrhizal from it roots or host it just like all thing that are in the brassica family also.

You what to plant the radishes in soil not cover by leaves. But same the leaves else where for the spring as mulch after your plants and growing tall enough.

How do I terminate this crop? How long before it decomposes? What do I plant in its place and do I have to wait for the radishes to decompose before planting a spring crops there?
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Жыл бұрын
If you do not have a freezing winter that will kill it off than just cut it down with a lawn mower. It will decompose on it own in 30 days.

What about gophers?? We have a terrible gopher, vole problem. How do you control them with growing radishes or any other over crop for that matter?
@anneg8319
@anneg8319 Жыл бұрын
Arggg. Voles. Just found this: Junell Wentz, a cherry grower at Wenatchee Heights, said she uses a mixture of oats and plaster of Paris to kill voles. She attaches short sections of pipe to a PVC T-joint, and places a mixture made of three parts oats and one part dry plaster of Paris in the middle pipe with a cap on. Voles enter the open pipes and eat the mixture. The plaster of Paris moistens and hardens in their gut, killing them. Wentz said birds will not enter the pipe to eat the mixture, and birds of prey that eat the dead voles are unaffected because the mixture is nontoxic.

I love watching your vids. I do watch and listen w one earpiece in usually. Your voice comes in another channel that my workpiece is not in and then I basically can’t hear you at all. If you can figure out how to make your voice audio in mono instead of stereo that would great so I can hear ya with one AirPod in my ear. Mono audio usually projects into left and right.
