2.5 years into scientific glassblowing and I thought I'd document how to make a 1 Litre Round Bottom Flask with 5 sockets. (This is my first time making them). Hope you find it interesting :)

Watching this will make me feel ultra guilty every damn time I break a piece of glassware in the lab in the future 😂😂😂

I remember designing and ordering a unique piece of glassware for an experiment. We had three pieces made and it cost the institute a not-insignificant amount of money. I broke one of these pieces shortly before we had a chance to use it. I felt horribly guilty and I was not allowed near the other two until everything had been set up for use. :(

Stunning work. Anyone who has used custom or unusual pieces of glassware should appreciate the level of skill involved with the creation of pieces like this. You are an artist who creates items which are both beautiful and functional.

I was mesmerized by your work. I never heard of scientific glass blowing. What an amazing career it must be. I found your video when I was researching scientists who work with glass. I usually give my soaps names inspired by science and engineering. I often use the first name of scientists or the names of various chemical compounds. I have a new soap scented with a fragrance oil called, Sea Glass, and that's how I fell down the glass rabbit hole.

Hello 😁🤗👋nice to meet you Natalie-c I think it's was. Thank you 🙏very much. I've been an aspiring chemist (cause things get smaller so i keep learning) until if found something better of course. I love music🎶(reading/learning) in this wonderful stage of lifes space🌌 and chemicals is like a basic instrument 🎷🎸🎹🎺🎻to me which after my mother ironically remarried💍 a chemist who lost only chemist job ever had shortly after they married💍 few weeks after meeting. These videos📀📼 def. Help keep those dreams☁ alive.

Nice work! During my vocational training as a chemist, 1975-78 in a pharmaceutical company, I also learned how to deal with glass, as well as the production of some glass tools. In the meantime, these techniques are obsolete, and nobody needs today the associated tools. For example, we manufactured capillary columns made of a glass tube, on a device consisting of a gas burner, a fixture for the glass and a hand crank. The capillary columns were used for our gas chromatograph. After a while they broke and had to be replaced.

Maybe the techniques you learned or some tools you used are obsolete, but laboratory glass technician (especially who has such a great skills and tools like Natalie) is a very useful and rare job nowadays. E.G. in Hungary now are below 100 at the whole country. There are still many things with melted glass what you can't do with any robot. One expert I know works almost every days including sunday and he has time only the most important orders. He makes several things including big and complex glass reactors to pharmaceutical companies. But if you 've ever worked as a preparative chemist and knew the price for example a 6 l round bottom flask you wished to have a glass technician to repair it when it's broken instead to buy a new one even in ebay or aliexpress :). The other thing that is better to repair a fine glass than order a questionnable one via internet.

I was curious how such remarkably pricice vessels such as lab glassware were made. I had assumed the process had somehow been completely mechanised by now but I guess the manufacture engineering hasn't reached that far yet. This really explains the high cost of vessels like flask vs the cost of connectors and condensers.

It's strange to see that the people making the glass I've used for a decade now also get into the zone when creating. When I run a reaction, I sometimes get into that hyper-focused zone. Not so much for a simple reaction, but for something like dropwise addition at reflux under argon, I'm controlling multiple valves, flow rates, watching temperatures, pressures, and it's becomes this complex system that you're doing off muscle memory. It's a bit like a symphony

How is it that you stop glassware from cracking, when reworking a piece? Does it have to cool down slowly? Can this be achieved without a oven/furnace?
@TheExplosiveGuy
@TheExplosiveGuy 3 жыл бұрын
It's borosilicate glass so it's much less sensitive to thermal changes, and it goes through an initial stress relief annealing process after blowing it (oven). Reworking it is simple after that, so long as you anneal it afterwards.
