Jay Diggs goes back to 1995! A time before recording music and audio production was as easy as pressing a key on a laptop. In this video you'll see Jay craft a New Jack Swing beat using his hardware drum machines and synthesizers and record them onto analog tape. If you've never watched Jay in the studio, well...you're in for a ride!

This is definitely more reminiscent of the late 80's to early 90's. There was a drastic change sonically by 95. I'm an elder millennial so I have a keen recollection of these nuances. Which I understand for someone born in the early 90's there is a generational overlap and different interpretation of what era certain music sounds were dominant in. With that said, this is still nostalgic and you have a great talent in recreating something that brought us back to a better time. Thanks for sharing this with us.

This is definitely pre 95. This is Late 80’s early 90’s new jack era. By the mid 90s there were acts like Jodeci, Faith Evans, and Monica to name a few and by then the sound was changing. With that being said, this is a great video and very accurate to what was made in the new jack era. Keep up the great work

I mean since he was born in 1992, he and the adults around him at the time would have still been listening to late 80s jams. So in a way I guess this is more of a slice of what people were already listening to in 1995 as opposed the latest sounds being created at the time.

Love your content bro, but this track sounds more like 1988-91. 95' was more the 'Hip-Hop Soul' era. For this era think more 'peak Jodeci', rather than 1988 Guy. MPC60 MKII for harder drums, EMU-Racks (Proteus FX), ASR-10 for the sampling, and more lush Sounds from boxes like the Roland JD-800/990 JV-1080, D-70, Korg Trinity, etc... for the R&B tracks.

Even though this sounds more accurately like a 88-91 record, still a well produced and very detailed instrumentation with great sonics! By 95, Boom Bap drums with with 70s soul samples/or chord progressions took over the east coast, while the west coast g funk scene had undertones of Zapp and Parliament , and other 80s funk samples/jazz progressions. The r&b music at the time adopted elements from both sides of the coasts but was mostly Smooth Jazz based with vocals in place of a saxophone and the current drum sounds of the era. 1995 Overall, mostly down to mid tempo beats, with the exception of the EDM genres (at the time) like techno, house, and Euro-Dance, etc. The only time we would still rarely hear music like the one in this video by 1995 was usually informercials, instructional videos, behind-the-scenes/documentaries, and some soft-core adult Spice Channel material. Still GREAT music and nobody else can recreate New Jack Swing as good as you.

This is really dope and 🔥. Im sure by now you know this isn’t ‘95 R&B. That year TLC was releasing most of their singles from Crazy Sexy Cool, R Kelly was making hits, Bad Boy was releasing great R&B with Faith and Total, Jodeci was Freek’n You and Xscape was asking who can I run to 😂. Real smooth and sexy music. However this track you made is 🔥 you should drop a remake and make it like that era. I know you would make some heat.

@@jaydiggsmusic true, but that's like making a boom bap track and calling it a "2000s" sound just because some artists were still making boom bap in the 2000s like MF DOOM. there will always be artists who don't "fit" their time period, whether they're ahead or behind, but each decade definitely has its own popular music tropes and for 1995, this ain't it. It's about as 80s as it gets haha, there's nothing wrong with that though, I can't get my head out of the 80s when I'm making music either

It was a v good urban musical period but it doesn't come close to the 80s soul and disco funk era or the 60s and 70s Funk and Disco era imo. If anything it was quite commercial and gimmicky and dated very rapidly, by the early 2000s swing beat sounded really old but I still like the sound compared with modern mainstream music which is mostly terrible.

My fave New Jack Swing song of that era has to be: Bobby Brown - Two Can Play That Game. As for synth bass, I'd say the Solid/Lately Bass patch from the 4-op Yamaha TX-81Z/DX-100/DX-21 was the king of late '80s/Mid-'90s bass sounds, along with percussion from the TR-909/HR-16 & SR-16.

Omg in 97 we used the Atari Falcon with Notator to sequence Juno 60, Prophecy Korg, Roland W30 sampler. I like the first Naughty by Nature album and Cypress Hills temple of boom album.

This sounds so authentic to the time. It would fit right in into a Sonic game. There may still have been tracks that sounded like this being made in 1995 in countries where they weren't up to date on the latest trend. It's still crazy how quickly music changed in a matter of years compared to now.

Man absolutely love this new Jack swing music of the early nineties! Was first introduced to it from sonic CD when I was younger which led me into finding new Jack swing. It so interesting to see how easily your able to construct a song!
