Making a BIG Hydraulic Cylinder Rod & Eye | Part 2

This video is part 2 of a job we did to make a new BIG hydraulic rod and eye for a Hitachi EX1200-6 Excavator bucket cylinder. The rod has a lot of scratches and the eye is completely torn off the rod and has fatigue so we are making a whole new cylinder rod and eye. This shows the step by step process to make the new cylinder rod including machining and welding. We start with a 170mm diameter piece of MnVS6 induction hardened chrome bar and turn it into the hydraulic cylinder rod before fitting and welding on the new eye that we made in Part 1! First we rough machine down one end of the rod before welding silicon bronze on the cushion. Once it’s cooled we continue machining the rod in the lathe by turning down the silicon bronze and finish machining the end for the piston and nut. We cut a 3mm thread pitch external thread for the nut before flipping the rod to machine the other end. We machine a spigot to fit the rod eye and a taper for weld prep before fitting and tack welding the new rod eye in position. The eye is welded on using metal cored wire before cryo freeze shrink fitting the new bushing using liquid nitrogen. We finish the job by cleaning, wrapping and strapping the new rod and send it on it’s way to the customer.

About 4 yrs ago I had an accident that left me with a serious brain injury. It ended my career as a machinist. I watch these videos and it reminds me of the fun I had taking metal stock and turning it into tools and industrial parts. I might not be able to do the job anymore, but this channel is lot of fun to watch and learn. The short breaks with your dog are a great. Thank you Kurtis for publishing all these videos. An old duffer like me really enjoys watching the process.

@@marieortiz698 I fell down a flight of stairs. It damaged parts of my brain that deal with balance and speech. I then had a stoke which did additional damage. I now have serious memory issues, major balance issue, speech issues, and get easily confused or distracted

As a former cargo van courier I really appreciate that you secure the item to the skid. Too many times I got things like that forked in that forced me to do a lot more lashing with the straps than I normally did. My fav was them wanting to load a 500lb steel ring into the van with no skid under it. I was like, "um no. You're not gonna fuck up my cargo bed with your forks. Put it on a pallet jackass"

If you own machinery in Australia, it's a no-brainer & cheaper to get this skilled Aussie to repair your machinery parts. The only mistake he could make is not passing on his skills to others. In his videos, he illustrates what can be achieved through experience and bloody hard work. In my past working years, I saw men using similar but antiquated machines in very large power plant machine shops. When I went with my Dad to watch a ship being launched he worked on as a boilermaker at the old Newcastle State Dockyard, I remember seeing gigantic lathes, borers, and shapers being used for shipbuilding. Watching Kurtis makes me feel young again.

I really appreciate that you subtitle information about tool inserts, speeds and welder settings, it really shows you respect us and provides interest as to what is going on. Thanks for speeding up some of the repetitive and boring turning activity. Your quick introduction is quite adequate. This is in contrast to other KZfaqrs who will not quit talking.

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering well, the subtitles are indeed appreciated extra info. Easy to ignore when you just want to relax, easy to get more information when you’re feeling curious about the process. Perfect balance. One question, phrased for Karen but either can presumably answer: do you know all these technical details, and so you can just subtitle at will, or do y’all have some sort of protocol (perhaps as easy as dictation that you cut out and replace with subtitles when you edit) set up for getting the right information to the right spot in the video, or what? I ask because it seems impressive the level of detail you’re sometimes getting. Regardless of how you two do it, good work!

It's not only the fabrication artistry, but also the deep knowledge of how these components are used - and what can contribute to their longevity. I have no idea how expensive it would be to buy an OEM replacement, but I am under the impression the CEE replacement is better than original. I also don't know how Kurtis does all this work without talking to himself. He never speaks unless a specific point requires narration. I would go nuts keeping to myself like that! 🤣 Fascinating stuff.

You saw what happened when he was making something before and the more he machined it, the worse it got right? It wasn't his fault of course, it was the end of the manufactured material. Meanwhile the manufacturer was trying to say he was being too rough on the material... Like that's only cause they didn't wanna be at fault. Kurtis does fucking beautiful work.

I was a Cat field mechanic and assembled and installed parts such as you do but NEVER saw anything done as well as you create. Your skills and craftsmanship are old world perfection. Our maintenance workshop had an old lathe with worn bed for metal spray and welding jobs. We protected the bed face with a glass fibre fire blanket but grit & sparks get everywhere.

Yeah this is why we don't video every job because it does take some extra time and stop/starting or waiting for the missus to get certain footage starts to do my head in a bit when I just want to get in and get it done!

Should try setting up some stationary cameras, and just let them run. might produce sufficient material to edit, that can be narrated later, without being in your way. Kind of like they do those wild kingdom or survival shows, just you happen to be the wild animal. 😆

I try to look beyond the work and see the man that does the work. I have determined that you are both a genius and an artist and your product is both a hydraulic rod and industrial jewelry. Down in your soul there is a standard that most people wouldn't understand, that is why you work alone, and prefer it that way. If you had a helper you would need to compromise your standards to accommodate them, something you would never do. If every friend you have worked for you for six months, in the end you would have no friends. I'm pretty sure I know what I am talking about. Art from Ohio

As a hobbyist, my favourite parts are the process selection, sequencing, and setups. It gives me some confidence to see that Kurtis uses similar setups to mine (although several sizes larger), and can consistently turn out world class work.

Kurtis a shop like yours is a necessity if a company wants to operate heavy equipment without having a huge stockpile of parts on the shelf. OEM's don't want to invest in spare parts beyond the minor stuff. With equipment going out of date in a 5 year cycle the only way to get a repair part is to have the OEM accept the order, place it with the original supplier, the supplier then orders material, schedules the part for the next opening in the orders and you wait the 90 days for the material, then another 90 days for manufacture, and then shipping. That is if they are shipping. 48 hour turn is stellar response time. Congratulations on having a good relationship with your supplier. Also you aren't milking the customer. I worked for a shop that would never ship in less than a weeks time. Every job took that long just to pad the bill for "rush delivery'.

I've done a fair amount of machining in my day, as I went to a school to become a Horologist and had a reasonably decent career out of it. However, I dont think I ever consumed as much raw material in my nearly decade in that profession as you pulled as waste from just this single part. It's bloody impressive. You do amazing work here Kurtis.

I think why this channel works is curtis gives a brief outline of the problem and solution and then it’s all visual so we all get to see the good stuff welding linnishing cutting milling and large scale fabrication it’s great to see…..and oddly therapeutic.

two very satisfying things that I take from this video, first, the skill behind the art, second, the involvement of the. artist in absolutely all the steps, from creating the piece, to handling, welding, packing, driving.....very nice, lad!

My sister @ X- mass present time 🤨 I had wrapped a box inside a box, in side a box... five times. Each box had a full roll of tape on it. Inside the last box was a pair of ear rings 😘

I am not a metal worker at all so i really appreciate that you explain and then show in detail. You and your partner make a great team. And my “favorite”part was to see the run-out when you first put it in the lathe. No movement on the thousands dial? Wow. Thank you for the time and effort of your videos, they are excellent.

Just gos to show you how ripped off you get at the dealers.... the fact that somebody can scratch build 2 new parts and have money left over that fast and still be cheaper then it costs to buy 1 part from the dealer shows how much the dealers over charge people

Spent my whole life working as a machinist. At 72 years old, retired since 65. I am so glad i don't have to work. It was so nerve wracking, working with such expensive pieces of metal. You know what you are doing. you make it look too easy.

Ceramic inserts, I use them every day. But then again I'm working with hardened steel on most of my jobs. The life of a last in line operator. :)

At 2:00 and within 27 seconds Kurtis serves up the perfect justification for his business and an eloquent expression of the free enterprise spirit: I can do it cheaper and faster. This is the spirit that creates value for trade, and is the best justification for living in a community of like minded and productive people. As someone who grew up in a tiny rural farming community in the USA but now lives in a giant city, I can say without hesitation that this is the kind of man I would be proud to have as a neighbor and as a friend. Such people seem to become more scarce as you move closer to larger population centers and I think this is an absolute shame. People in big cities seem to have no sense of their own value, nor do they take pride in the value they do create. They also have no sense of how they should treat other people. There are advantages to city life, but they are becoming more and more of an occasional treat amongst bitter fruit. I do not miss the rural setting I grew up in, but I do miss the character of its people. Good luck to you and your wife, Kurtis...you are the salt of the earth.

I honestly never would have thought to block the chips from going into the roller supports. Let alone to use duct tape to mask off the bulk of the area. That's ingenious.

Love these videos. Kurtis is an amazing machinist, and explains everything so well. But the editing is just on another level. This is pro level stuff, perfect cuts and love the restrained but perfectly times slow motion. Thanks to you both.

They go alright, probably the highest turnover insert we have they wear out quickest when cutting that super hard material

My favorite? Ahhh, the confidence in explaining the process is what captured my attention. You are not an old geezer yet have an experience that shines. Your descriptions of the goal then your methodology along with details such as installing a cutting bit or mounting an oblong piece that requires welding a block that is removed post build. Your knowledge is what I crave. I’m too old to start a new career so I live it thru you and your shop. Well done!
