Making a Bow: ILF Recurve Bow Riser made from scratch

International Limb Fit bows have been around a long time but have become popular in the hunting and 3D world this decade. Here is making an ILF riser with tools most people have access to. This homemade bow was fun and challenging. Everyone should build one of these for yourself.

When the piece is clamped down, laminated, glued together, it is also wrapped in plastic. Why is that? Great upload, thx!
@Makingitwild

I wrap everything in plastic to help contain the squeeze out. You don’t need to use plastic but smooth on gets everywhere and it’s hard to get off when it dries.

You did an incredible job, I honestly wanna buy one off you. Only difference I'd have is being cut past center so I can use a whisker biscuit. I like to incorporate elements of compound archery with my recurve like using vanes instead of arrows and the whiskey biscuit helps keep it nice and straight, but most importantly is that every bow riser I've ever bought was always warped and the limbs could never line up straight so that's why I'd like to hire someone with carpentry skills to make one for me.
@Makingitwild
@Makingitwild 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I’m not set up to sell bows but there are some bowyers making custom ilf risers that do a really good job. The bow in the video is cut 3/16” past center but if you use g10 or something else you can get away with going more. Stalker stick bows have a really good system for hiding I-beams and their bows look and shoot great. I’m sure you could get them to put a Berger button in so you could put a rest on it. There are some other companies as well that do a great job. Good luck

How did you make up the template to cut the rough shape? It seems really adjustable which is great but I'm worried about getting the angle of the grip all wrong
@Makingitwild
@Makingitwild Жыл бұрын
For the limbs I used a 17degree angle for that one if I remember correctly. For the grip I leave myself extra and keep carving and sanding until it feels right in the hand. It’s hard to show without making the video really long but there is a lot of shooting it and making adjustments over and over. If you’re worried about wasting material you can practice and get the angle right on a scrap 2x4 then when you start on your bow you’ll know what to expect. I do that every time I try something new. Good luck on yours.

What do you call the chamber that you put the riser into after you glued and saran wrapped it?.... It had a regulator. What was the purpose? Did the glue cure faster? What are you controlling?

Hey Ty, great job! What finish would you recommend going forward?
@Makingitwild
@Makingitwild 2 жыл бұрын
My favorite is Cambell Krystal because it’s really easy to work with but even spray polyurethane works pretty well. There are a couple good finishes like thunderbird epoxy and they work well but take a long time to cure.

I have a few questions about building a riser like this: Is there any structural benefit to using multiple woods like you did or is a solid chunk fine? Where can I get the hardware for the ilf fittings? How did you make your pattern? Do you think this would be possible with just hand tools and a cordless drill and sander? Thank you sir, this is an amazing video!
@Makingitwild
@Makingitwild Жыл бұрын
The only structural benefit to multiple wood species is you can use a harder species to stiffen up weaker woods but it is mostly for looks. A solid piece of dense wood will work fine. You can get the hardware from 3rivers archery or Lancaster’s. I’m sure other places carry them as well. I make my templates from other bows I’ve made and slowly tween them over time. For this one as long as the limb angles and length is correct you can change things as you go to make it better. You can also get away with way less tools than I use but it will take more time and patience to get everything right. Hope this helps. Good luck on yours.

Man, I can't believe you weren't thrilled with it. What pound test mono did you use to build that rest?
@Makingitwild
@Makingitwild 2 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t really thrilled with it at first but after getting it tuned and putting a couple hundred arrows through it I started liking it. I have some ideas to make it better so hopefully I’ll get around to making a better one soon. The fishing line is 25lb test but anything you have in that range will work. Trent wengerd didn’t come up with it but he’s the one making it popular. You should see how he does it.

@@Makingitwild Yes, I agree. I bought my first takedown bow a few weeks back after shooting one piece for 40 years. I am thinking about building a riser but, probably not ILF. I want to minimize riser length to build a short bow. Under 48. We shall see how it goes. I will probably break my limbs.

Thanks. I think the lighter wood is a variety of mahogany but it was on the off cut shelf and I’m not exactly sure. I thought it was something else when I got it. The darker wood is wenge. They aren’t the perfect woods for this but are plenty hard enough to hold up.
