Hi Mitch. Not sure how else to fix the moving end of the dro. I did look at drilling into the face of the tailstock tube but it is quite thin. I had to extend some of my MT2 inserts as a result. I drilled & tapped the ends & inserted a short screw in each. I think i drilled the 1mm holes in the milling machine without much trouble. Hope this helps. I do try when doing mods , to not drill into the machine , if at all possible. Steve.

Thanks, Thought so. I will start tomorrow! I have already extended some of my inserts as you suggest. Great resource this KZfaq with contributors like you. Thanks Mitch

@@mitchlees9622 No Mitch it is me who should be thanking you. Without that there would be no point posting anything. Good luck with your project & please let me know if it worked out well. One other thing is. If i did the project again. I would maybe buy a slightly better DRO. The problem with the Aldi item is that, every time you turn the tailstock handle , the DRO switches on. So if you did not notice it. The battery does not last long. Regards. Steve.

Nice result. You were lucky to have the existing threaded holes in the tailstock casting. No drilling😱

Yes I was lucky they were there. I hate drilling castings if it's possible not to. Thank you for the comment.

How did drilling the 1mm holes go? It must have worked but was it difficult? I am going to have a go at this design. You originally debated whether or not to use a clamping ring and obviously decided to go ahead with one and extend your tooling to allow them to be ejected. What would have been your potential solution had you not used the clamping ring? Thanks Mitch

I was origonaly going to drill the face of the extending MT2 tube. But decided to go with the design shown. It worked well & only a few items needed a extension to eject properly. Sorry for the late reply. Steve.

Nice ,but how often do you have to drill a blind hole with such accuracy ?

Frequently? I can't believe you are questioning the usefulness of a DRO.

It is very often. I want to say drill a hole 15mm down a bar. Touch off & zero. Drill to 15mm, done. It is definitely a useful feature to have for not much outlay.
