I was in need of a new wet rack, so I thought I'd take you through how to build one and what improvements I've made since I made my first version.
If you're wondering what a wet rack is, it's a handy tray that's perfect for priming, airbrush basecoating and sealing terrain.

So, how do you handle your mass priming/sealing folks?

I built a small turntable using some compact discs and a fidget spinner glued to a bit of plywood. That sits in a spray booth made of cheap foamcore. I know you said "mass priming/sealing" but I just couldn't resist responding. Fantastic video!

You get a raised baking mess tray (the ones cooks use for letting cakes cool on, then you can pop your terrain on that and put a tray underneath it. You can get oven trays made out of tin foil here.

In the past I've done something similar with a big hunk of XPS with a bunch of push pins in it, but it was really a temporary solution. This is really great and I need to make a few. For those looking in North America roofing/shingle nails are what you want to be looking for if you're unfamiliar.
@billd.iniowa2263
@billd.iniowa2263 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they arnt as common as they used to be 30 years ago. Roofing is all done with an air operated staple gun. but you can still get them in hardware stores.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
You can still buy them easily though, and they are actually still used a fair bit along side pneumatics. I've worked with some guys that can out nail a guy on a gun using a hammer and pouch, and there are a lot of times it's not worth setting up an air gun for a few quick repairs. And most shingles (at least here) are NOT put on with staples when an airgun is used, they are put on using these same nails that come on a coil.
@billd.iniowa2263

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Oh that doesnt surprise me. The broad head has more surface area than a staple. It might depend on the application. Near roof edges and on the crown and eaves maybe.

Agree with Black Magic, roofing nails are very easy to come by, haven't been a home improvement store anywhere in the US that doesn't have them in everything from small boxes to large bulk/contractor boxes, they are good inexpensive nails.

Nice vid, as usual, mate. I use the same sort of rack for bulk painting minis (removable nails for 15mm, dowel pegs for 28mm and bigger dowels for larger stuff), starting with base-coating in place and then lifting each one out on its stand to do the different layers by hand, then finish with sealing coats back on the rack. For terrain, I have mostly used sheets of MDF or timber off-cuts, but recently I had the idea to use inverted plastic planter pot trays from the gardening centre inside cheap plastic trays on the bottom, which seems to work quite well - as most glues and paints won't bond well with the plastic and the inverted planter pots have a ridged pattern that holds the terrain pretty much straight with limited contact points. May be worth others trying, so I thought I would share. Keep up the content, always enjoyable and informative.

I built a small spray box, with a spinning surface. I used a Lazy Suzan rack for the rotating surface then built some walls around it on 3 sides, it’s big enough to spray paint and seal anything I build, and convenient enough to carry in and out of my apartment whenever I want to use it.

To prevent runoff, cheap window insulation tape (available in the dollar/Euro/pound shop) might be a reasonable alternative. It's normally about 5-10mm thick and it's waterproof. Alternately, simply go around the edge with a line of hot glue or caulking.
@TheTerrainTutor

I thought tape but don't want it unsticking and getting all flappy messy like, I think silicone caulking is the way to go

Stonking idea brother. I use a lazy susan style turntable specifically designed for my spray both. However if you go to one of my original videos from years ago you will find two different paint racks with custom built turntables. One uses a microwave spinner, the other marbles. Building one of them to place under the rack would allow you to spin it rather than lift it. Lot of work, but it's an option. I found the microwave spinner worked better than the marbles by the way.

I have seen posterboards with a 1 inch grid on them. I bet if you were to punch the nails through the posterboard and then glue down the whole thing to the foamboard it would be a success without having to draw the lines and glue each individual nail. I may try it when I make one.

I use Paint pyramids for my bigger railway stuff. The plastic ones can be fixed to a board if needed. They stack so are easy to store. The metal ones from Axminster are heavier and stay put. Great for in a spray booth or on a painting turntable the point support is small so if the item is to be coated on all sides the marks are small. Amacf

I use longer nails then what you do for one reason. I double my boards, what I do is have one board that is flat, the baseboard. The second board is my drainage board, I have it so I slightly angles to the middle and to the front, to where I have a cutout in my retaining wall as well as have this point jut out slightly so it can hang over a table so it all flows down to one small point without having to stop what I'm doing and drain if I'm doing a lot of stuff in a day. I have a bucket under the drainage opening for all the liquids to drain into, usually something with an attached handle that I can hang on a nail on my work bench, or if I'm in the house I can hang it under the opening with a hook made from an old coat hanger that is slightly squashed together and one end turned into a hook and just place my wetboard on top of it, just remember to have enough of a gap in between the two wires so it doesn't get into the flow. This is what I do for my mobile wetboard. For my static or bench wetboard, I have a retaining wall that goes all the way around without a cutout in the wall. What I do instead is have a hole in the middle of the board and have the drainage board slope slightly to the center. I have a tube that fits into the hole that reaches to just below the rim of the bucket where I have drilled the same size hole in the lid of the bucket so there's no runoff or splashing.
