This video is from the Woodsmith Shop Episode 712: Craftsman Clock & Serving Tray which originally aired on PBS in December 2013. This mantel clock is a good example of the classic lines of the Arts & Crafts period. It incorporates a hand-made, ceramic tile that reflects the traditional use of stylized tile in Arts & Crafts design. The clock maintains a traditional look, but also takes advantage of more modern conveniences, like a quartz clock movement. And though screws are used for some of the joints, the screw holes are hidden by thin, end-grain plugs. Plus, the best part is that it's a great project to build in a weekend.

Way back when it first came out I made two dozen of these clocks out of qtr. sawn white oak. I gave them as gifts and donations to the senior center for raffles. I used Frank Lloyd Wright coasters in place of the expensive tiles suggested. Clock works came from Clock Kit.Great project.

Yeah, Don kept ownership of the Woodsmith Store when he sold the publishing side of the business, and he is starting to put out some videos for the store now too.

@@WoodsmithShowandmagazine I'm glad you put that out; I may be the only one who didn't know what happened to Don. Suddenly he was gone and most of the cast changed on the show. I'm glad he simply sold the business instead of, well, buying the farm or something. :-)

A great project - needs only a small about of wood, inexpensive clock mechanism and provides hours of woodworking!

A top with wide overhangs is a hallmark of the craftsman-style but you could definitely tone it down it you wanted.

@@WoodsmithShowandmagazine Not a good answer. Volume control is not rocket science. Little things like VU Meters work wonders when trying to balance volumes of voice vs over-dubbing of music or voice-overs. Call up other KZfaqrs and ask how they do it.

@@kevinshumaker3753 You might want to think about the CC to click on closed captions if you are having trouble hearing. I use them when I have problems hearing. Peace
