Making a D1-4 (and D1-3) adaptor so that I can transfer work from my lathe to the milling machine table and hold it vertically.
The starting point is an iron casting, and I also show the manufacture of the locking cams.
There seems to be a lot of interest in where I have the castings made, here is a direct link: ajd-foundries.business.site/

By the way would you consider selling one the raw castings?
@andypughtube
@andypughtube 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ballba365 I am out of raw castings. I do have a complete, finished item spare, as seen in the video, but I think I want real money for it. I could consider sending the pattern back to AJD foundry (who made mine) if you want to order a batch of them. I think that he would charge about £40 for each casting.

@@andypughtube Thanks for the quick reply Andy. As I'm based in Australia I guessing it will be easier to attempt this out of standard stock as dealing with the foundry and arranging shipping would take away any benefits gained.

Andy, an awesome project again. @@Ballba365 for the Aussies, George Weston will sell short lengths of grey cast iron. I bought some 30mm thick slices 190mm dia rounds @ $30 each a few years ago for a chuck mounting plate. It was a joy to machine and gave a beautiful finish even if it was messy!

I made a similar part in D1-3 some years back (using manual ops only) but have to say it's been sitting in the cupboard. Might be good to modify it to fit my 4th axis though so it actually gets some use. Sounds as if you have the ISO specs for Camlock so you get the definitive dims - I got mine from the late JS. 54:30 looks as if you tightened the cams the wrong direction? BTW, which GUI are you using here? I think you told me on the forum recently but it's gone already! Going for Probe Basic on my Bantam may have been a bit premature. Nice, meticulous work as ever!

Yes, I spotted my wrong-way cam turn watching it back. I thought that I would get away with it :-) The GUI I am using is "Touchy". I have got used to it, and I very much like the touch-MDI interface that it has.

Would you have considered casting them yourself or was it more cost effective to have a local foundry cast them?
@andypughtube
@andypughtube 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have the facilities for home casting iron, and even if I did I suspect that the quality of the iron and the integrity of the castings would not approach the commercial product without a lot more than just a basic casting setup.

would you trust a similar thing but mounted on a lathe? when I bought mine I didn't know that it didn't have a proper camlock spindle so changing chucks is a massive pain so I'm looking to make an adapter
@andypughtube
@andypughtube Жыл бұрын
Not made out of cast iron, no. But I made one out of EN24 steel (its the spindle adaptor on my 4th axis) and I would trust that on a lathe. bodgesoc.blogspot.com/2017/05/harmonic.html

Lovely bit of work. Does the foundry accept one-off jobs from the general public, or are they a place that you have tamed?

They will happily take work, especially one-offs, from anyone. (I think the guy finds production jobs boring) ajd-foundries.business.site/

Hi Andy, I would like to get blanks made locally (New Zealand). I have a local foundry, I wonder if there are any drawings or dimensions I can use to make a blank for them?
@andypughtube
@andypughtube 2 жыл бұрын
The model and a drawing are here: Drawing: a360.co/3HqPnPn 3D Model: a360.co/3fjEnJs If you are working in Fusion360 then there is a pair of Revolve features called D14 and D13. If you slide the timeline to before them you get the foundry pattern that I 3D printed. D14 is then the profile machining to make a D1-4, and D13 (suppressed) to make a D1-3 from the blank.

I'm quite curious if cost was a factor in deciding to have castings made, rather than machining from standard stock. I had once sought a quote from a nearby foundry, and could only conclude they added a couple zero's just to make sure I understood they did not want my business.
@andypughtube
@andypughtube 3 жыл бұрын
Starting from round stock would need a piece 50 x 185. That looks to be about £50 per lump on eBay in aluminium or mild steel. I haven't found a price for a plasma-cut square from 2" steel, which would be another option. The foundry I use charged me £36 for each casting. In either case there would have been a lot more to machine away to get the final shape.

@@andypughtube £36 ?? Sweet baby Jesus, it would be cheaper for me to get stuff made there even considering shipping. Wow, I guess I'll have to do more foundry shopping. Hopefully my one experience doesn't represent the market here like I thought it did.
