Making a Desk from Plywood - Built in Wireless Charger

My son asked for a desk for his birthday and he left it up to me to design it. I looked at heaps of desks on Google images for some inspiration and this is what I came up with. Hope you like it!

The best unspoken tip in this video is the bamboo skewer measuring trick. It begins at 17:00 so cool. Love this desk brother

I liked having the air hose on hand while routing. Never thought to do that, always just kept a brush nearby or pulled down my mask to blow off the chips

little tecniques like that one, the simple wood clamps at 2:05 and the little pieces of ply to hold the charger at 22:15 are so cool to me. Probably effective solutions he came up with experience.

You've done a stellar job. I found my desk downstairs in this apartment block. Someone had dumped it and put a note on it "Free". I took it in to my flat and made a bunch of modifications to it to make it suit my needs. I wish it was a bit wider but otherwise, it does the job.

If you don't have a router, use a coping saw. If you don't have a table saw, a circular saw can do the same thing - you can clamp a board down as a guide fence of necessary. Hell, you can use a hand saw, but it's going to be a workout. A round gouge can get you the hole for the charger. A forstner bit and router do make it easier, but they're not necessary. Just takes knowing how to work with what you have, or what you can get.

The angled surface edge looks really great! Plywood layers typically aren't very attractive, but you've managed to make them a highlight!! Well Done.

One thing I've come to over the years is that no one can see what you had in your mind when you started something, they only know what you came up with in the end. So it can't be judged by what you WANTED, it can only be judged by what it IS. And most of the time, that is more than enough, I find.

And it doesn’t have to be flawless to be perfect either. Another distinct that our ancestors knew and appreciated but we tend to forget about is that between pure beauty and dependent beauty. If something is fit for its purpose, it’s beautiful (dependent beauty), even if it’s not particularly aesthetically pleasing (pure beauty).

For some reason I had it in my head that a tapering jig *needs* a runner underneath, but I can see now that it really just needs the fence at the right spot. That should make my life easier next time I have to create a quick one like you did here. Thanks!

Gorgeous! I particularly love the way the bevel on the underside turned out even if it's not very visible in the finished desk. So glad your son likes it! There's just something special about things someone you love makes for you 😊

Skewer trick is most excellent. I've been using a variation of that for years. I made a slide rule like tool that operates the same way, just is a dedicated tool.

Looks very neat and smart to include a wireless charger. You could scratch a lightening bolt into the paint of the form ply to show where the charger is

Good choice for the top. It lasts a very long time. I have a couple of bench tops made from the more industrial grade one and they are not treated with care, and they've faired well under the abuse.

Sometimes a surprise source of that kind of thing is an old treadmill, usually gotten for free. The floors on those can be REALLY nice stuff. I got one that had a really nice piece of MDF coated 3/4" ply. I'm still not sure what to do with it, other than a glue table. It would be perfect, NOTHING sticks to that stuff, and it was free. Treadmills are a great source of all kinds of thing, and you look like a hero when you remove people's reminder of their failure and give them floor space back.

@@willmorrison1022 Yup. The coating is a plastic type (if memory serves me right) that's akin to teflon. And it has to be, if you think back to its intended use, i mean, concrete is one of the stickiest materials we can make, that's not directly glue. I've tools, that i had to dip in acid, to get the metal sheen back to them, after they were touched by concrete. So yeah, if you want a surface to work on, you cannot do better, short of spending the money on a teflon slab, which is infinitely more costly.

Liked the hot melt to apply the drawer fronts, 45 yrs in the trade and have never seen it. Plan on using it in the future. Nice job

I really appreciate the detail you put into your work, especially wiping off the excess glue with a damp rag to make clean-up and sanding easier. Small step, but it's really pleasing too look at being done as it shows the care you take throughout the entire building process.

This looks amazing - what a present! My four year old son and I love watching your videos - please don’t take this the wrong way but he finds your presentation very calming and it helps him go to sleep some nights... Might want to round over the bottom exposed edges/corner of the drawer section. I might be overly cautious but I reckon unless your son is super careful that might bite him at some point.
