Another endeavor in the "sewing things in places you probably shouldn't be sewing in" adventures... (it's a working title). This time I decided that making a dress in a hotel room was a GREAT plan, and I doubled down on my efforts by making a cottagecore pinafore without a pattern. Just a borrowed sewing machine and a desire to MAKE!
One thing I will mention is that when making a pinafore from upcycled materials: make sure you have triple checked that the bedsheets you are about to make a dress from, do NOT have random discolorations that will inevitably end up at the back center of your dress.
Pattern: none
Materials: bedsheets from a thrift store

Really glad to see you channel your inner Samuel L. Jackson on camera… (for the record, she channels him often while not on camera, too!) 😆

About 10 years ago I sewed up a twin size quilt to in a hotel room while my sons were at ComicCon. Staff wondered why I brought a sewing machine at check in and it opened some interesting conversations about mothers and grandmothers who sewed/quilted in their past. Kind of an interesting ice breaker. That was a great weekend.

That's some mighty fine desperation sewing. I've done similar. I was in a Ronald McDonald house for 74 days. It was awkward. and not my best sewing. I'm feeling this!

I live in far south Texas (south of everything in the lower 48 except the Florida keys, so always hot), and I’d wear it over a tank top or thin tshirt - the loose skirt would make up for the polyester (maybe). Or as a beach coverup.

I love how swishy the skirt is! It's so full that you could fix and questionable sewing bits on the hem while wearing it! And don't be so hard on yourself. You made that thing in a hotel room, without a pattern, with limited and questionable tools, and it still came out wearable! That's an accomplishment!

Measure from the sewing machines needle over to your right hand side Mark your seam allowance with some gaffers tape.

I was going to say I could listen to you all day, but in reality I would probably need to lie down in a dark room after a couple of hours just to recover from the laugh aches.

I’m sitting here in central Florida hand sewing a pair of tap pants because I don’t have the energy to fight with my machine. But I’m actually sewing 🪡 I like the pinafore

YEAH YOU! You had LOTS of mountains to scale in that project, and you overcame! Interfacing tip: one can use just another layer of the same fabric. I salute you for using the hotel time with which you were stuck to DO something.

I'm just about to hit 'play'. You made a thing. In a hotel room. From thrifted fabric. And no (bleep) pattern...

As someone with a 1950's sewing machine, I have given up on good looking buttonholes (unless I sew them by hand, which I rarely have energy for). On the plus side this machine is built like a tank and has faithfully put up with my sewing shenanigans, no matter how many layers there are.

This was a fun project! As someone who services sewing machines about 3/4 of the machines I see have problems in the bobbin area with tension, or it eats the thread, or etc. so you are not alone in that. Your jumper turned out really cute considering what you were working with.

Turned out cute! And, bruh, I'd just be like "eh, I'll just toss on a decorative belt and call it a day" I refuse to dissect waistbands.

I can totally empathize with that. It's crazy how machines can get very temperamental with bobbins oh, that is usually 2/3 of what ends up being wrong with my machine. It even happens with nicer machines, or rather familiar ones.
