I liked the sort of more general sci fi aesthetic things had back then too. Of course you had your gothic elements, but a lot of it wouldn't have looked out of place in Star Wars or 2000AD.

A quick technique to cover the cardboard ends is to put on an old pair of gloves and spread hot glue across the surface prior to painting. Fast and super effective. Thank you Eric for all your inspiration.

@@skilledwarman I think spackle could be too wet. Cheap caulk could work. It would take longer to dry than hot glue.

@@trikepilot101 Oh im using hot glue for the structural bits like you showed for sure. Im just thinking of using spackle along the edges to try and make it look a bit less like cardboard. Maybe throw some paperclips in to look like rebar. Figured spackle, the rebar clips, and a flocking of a sand mix i use for bases before the painting step could look good without adding too much time to the build

While I wouldn't limit yourself to one hour...I have done something similar to this many moons ago. Shortly after college we decided to randomly play Mordheim - and no one had any of the terrain on hand. I cut and built a crazy 3'x3' Mordheim table out of cardboard, hot glue and popsicle sticks...dusted everything in 4-5 different grey/brown spray paints and we played a small campaign over the next few days. In the end it went straight into the trash. Not ideal, but it gave use the vertical/crazy/twisted Mordheim vibe we were looking for. For texture on simple buildings you can also try that chunky "rock finish" spray paint that some hobby shops carry. Easy, even if the cans gum up really quick.

The best thing about a project like this isn't just that it's quick, but that you can continuously improve the end result. You can set aside 60-90 mins to build a few buildings and call it good, then at a later time you can spent maybe half an hour to add details like windowsills and exterior trim, later you could add rubble, broken furniture and signage. over the course of weeks, months or even years you could go from a simple ruin like this to some genuinely impressive terrain, but at each step you still have perfectly usable terrain.

This is fantastic for the time put in! Such a good start to a game board in a ridiculously fast time. Tile grout smearing worked so well I thought Would you consider a part 2 of this video? "Upgrading a full table of 40k terrain in X hours" I'm thinking out loud here: 1.) Some way of covering up the corrugated cardboard edges, I see another commenter has mentioned hot glue, but also I guess there is spackle or maybe modelling compound or some kind of plaster? 2.) Window frames and some tiled floors to break up plain surfaces using chipboard 3.) Rebar and other construction things sticking out of the upper floor edges 4.) Scratch built details using various bits such as power boxes 5.) A little more rubble on the floor, similar to your excellent ruined skyscraper build where it was pink foam and that cracked effect of the bent foamcore board I think it was

You havent given us the best game table...youve given us the good enough game table. Thats what matters. Something to play on now versus 6 months from now. And cheap. just wish I had as much luck in using a hot glue gun as you. Mine is more like a hot "sticky" gun. Dollar Tree used to sell miniature milk crates (about 6" or so). They made great building frames to cut up. Sadly they dont sell them anymore.
