Loved it! However for the wood finish, I would probably have giving it a light sanding after charring the wood, so only the grain had a brown/black colour. But NICE job, a small failure only means you’ve learned something NOT to do ;)

As a "journeyman" smith, I had to make my own hammer, with help and direction of course, but my teacher had a specific design for handles that was very interesting and honestly pretty helpful, and every time I see ordinary handles I can't help but feel disgusted by such bland design, all in all keep up the good work, I see good things ahead of you.

I like the video and especially your discussion about how you changed your model to make it more castable. I tried some casting, but had a problem getting the details to look decent because the sand always stuck to the side of my printed model. Would like to see you do another video on changing your model to get some good details (what works, what doesn't). Going from 3d design and fusion 360 to print to cast. Similar to this one, just with more info on your design decisions for castability, and how you do it

The next time you end up with a loose hammer head, just soak the head in a few inches of water overnight before you mess around with refitting and wedging the head. The wooden handle will soak up a bunch of the water and swell to fill the hammer head making for a super tight fit.

Very nice job. Some tips to make your life a bit easier next time. The rasps are indeed slow. Grab a spoke shave if you have the time and money. Blackening it with fire is fun, but not practical. Put a lot of oil on the handle, especially on the top of the hammer. Drown the wood there in oil, that will prevent the head from coming loose (it swells the fibers). Also, a polishing wheel could make that hammer stand out nice nothing.

Great job, the casting came out great and al-bronze is a good choice of materials for a hammer. How much does the head weigh? I'm surprised how well the petrobond core has worked for you and a few others I've seen recently in hammer casting videos.
@tobhomott6 жыл бұрын
Backyard Casting the stuff is much harder and tougher than other copper alloys, so it'll stand up to a lot more without the faces "mushrooming" with use. In fact it should get more and more durable the more you use it. That's why Paul from Paul's Garage and Swdweeb used it for their hammers, and also why I chose to purchase some "real" C954 aluminum bronze for the axe I cast this past summer, there is a 4-video series about that on my channel which I believe really shows off these alloys' strengths where making things to whack other things with is concerned. If you work harden the face and crosspeen on yours, they should be comparable to mild steel or maybe even a little harder. 90Cu-Al10 may even be heat treatable (C954 is, from what I have read - among the known copper alloys, certain al-bronzes are unique in this way), but I have had trouble figuring exactly how to do that. Al bronze isn't the easiest bronze to cast well, but it makes the best hammers and axes! Also It's a much better use of pop cans and extruded aluminum in the foundry, that stuff can be cast on its own but being relatively pure aluminim you'll be fighting shrink and hot tears etc.
@tobhomott6 жыл бұрын
Backyard Casting your hammer has one flat face on one side and a cross-peen on the other, that was what I was referring to... I used a ball peen to work harden my axe but I bet you could do yours just by whacking it on something hard and flat (another big hammer face maybe?). I'm not really sure, I had to make up my own peening technique on account of not finding much info about that when I was researching it.
@steffankaizer6 жыл бұрын
the hole in the head needs to have a kind of draft to, just like it would have if it were forged with a draft (not sure if thats where the word comes from). i dont think people nowedays understand what holds the head on the handle since the modern hammers are hotpunched instead of forged and dont fit for shit and come loose all the time. if you ever get sick of it falling of the handle or accidently crack the scull of someone standing behind you, you should file that draft in

Are you getting new crucible tongs? Those crucible tongs you have work but are sketchy i would like to know. Also your young right you have a long life ahead of you and need the right materials, so the casting is not so sketchy, I can ship tongs to you for free if I know: 1 your crucible size and 2 your mailing address to ship to. I know this is weird but I am young just like you and just do not want to see anyone get hurt. If you want some tongs I can help, cause I want to help.
