Getting a good start on building a wooden head for the wooden tripod. I will be going through the tripod build in a detailed website article fairly soon.

I like the aesthetic detail of the black PVC pipe running through the ply, the bigger version looking great.

Francis Barnett Works better too, and a bit easier to make.

For the rubber drum sander use finger nail polish remover. When servicing printers the rubber pinch rollers I can get about half life back out of them. Learned that from an old pro about 20 years ago. I still use it. Just wipe it with a rag lil bit at a time.

I like the idea of building your own tripod and now refining the design. It looks like your outside work table/bench has weathered the winter just fine. :) Thanks for the video and I'm looking forward to Part II.

KSFWG I had it covered with a tarp for most of it.

I think the ABS is a great idea!

Peter Brown Thanks Peter, it certainly works better with the pipe and it was a lot easier to make.

I had the same problem with the sander. I used electrical tape and that provides enough grip to keep the sleeve on the spindle.

Cool project. Some people use these wooden tripods as light stands in their homes.

Hi John. Swelling the sleeve with lacquer thinner might work, but it will probably be a temporary solution only. The thinner will go into the rubber because the partial pressure of lacquer thinner in the bowl is much greater than what it would be in regular air. Once it stays in normal air for a while the lacquer thinner should leave the rubber again, and make it shrink to it's original size. At least that's what chemistry tells me, but I've been wrong before.

neistridlar And then I'll do it again. It did work, by the way.

Good job... My new (old second hand) video cameras weigh 6 kg / 11 lbs so i need to make a solid tripod...

for the moving parts of the head you could use a plastic cutting board for smooth action, as for the drum head, i think plasti-dip makes a sprayable rubber you could use on the drum to give a thicker layer and if it wears down just spray again... just a thought...

Congrats for your 50th vid, the best so far in this channel... The spindle thing is very strange... The tape didn't help cause it wouldn't expand when you tighten, the thinner was really clever, I wanna try it with sonething as well...

Nice, looking forward to the rest. I have the same problem with the rubber being too small, I am thinking about heating it to ~300 degree F and letting it cool while compressed to see if it would reset fatter.
@IBuildIt9 жыл бұрын
The Nomadic Polywright Show I think that if anything, heating it up may make it even smaller in the long run. The lacquer thinner worked as predicted and the drum is now the perfect size for the sleeve.

excellent, good to know.

Mineral spirits will work also. The solvents evaporate out much slower so ill be longer between retreatments. A little safer to use also.

That looks like it came from the age of yore (sans PVC pipe). Maybe steam punk it up with brass hardware. I've got to get my spray gun out soon and practice. Looks fun.

***** Neat idea, maybe if I build another one that won't be a working one, but more of a decoration I could make it fancy. I think I'd use copper hardware, though.

John. My Ridgid spindle sander suffers from the same problem. I think its a common problem actually. And I bought the same aftermarket sanding sleeves you did. They're real loose on the drums. Shame. Great video btw.

que paisagem linda, parece o paraíso. Quanto aquela serragem, já vi alguns vídeos sobre como prensar aquele material para fazer tijolos, que depois abastecem lareiras.

Curious to see how long the thinner makes the spindles big enough to work. If I keep hitting the nut with the impact driver to get it tight enough I'm going to be getting a new sander..
@IBuildIt9 жыл бұрын
krtwood I figure worst case, I can just do it again every time it shrinks. It did work well, swelling it up so that it's a snug fit to start with, so that's a big improvement.

You do good video so this isn't a criticism but when I watch videos I'm thinking about how they were made. It cracks me up that you go outside to set up a camera and then go back inside so it can film you going outside again. Then you walk past the camera and have to go back and get it to set up the next shot. :)

John Heisz will you have plans to purchase? I have 2 tripods in the shop, always have to take it out when i go to the kids sports, would be nice to have dedicated ones for the shop. Thanks.

Miter Mike's Woodshop I will make plans, but I'm not sure how detailed they will be (low detail = free, high detail = paid) and don't know when I will get the time to get them together.
@BiglinesNL9 жыл бұрын
have you considered doing your own take on a fluid head? I'm asking because the real ones cost hundreds, so I've been trying to come up with my own design, but it's proving a bit of a precision engineering project
@IBuildIt9 жыл бұрын
BiglinesNL Just need a mechanism to attach to each axis that will restrict sudden movements. Maybe an oil soaked leather disk pushing and rotating against a steel disk, with adjustable tension. Since I will only be using this tripod for static shots, it's not really needed. Still, as shown in the opening, the original did work fairly smoothly and the new one is even better.

Are the sanding sleeves still loose when you tighten down the nut at the top of the spindle John?
@IBuildIt9 жыл бұрын
dbmakingstuff Well, yeah, otherwise it wouldn't be a problem.
