How I´m making a Brass Cuff Bracelet from a scrap Basket
The working process of making a Men´s Cuff bracelet.
I have found a broken brass basket, from which I cut some brass wires and cut them to the same length. Then I attach 6 of the wires to the vise and braid them in an old Nordic pattern. The brass wires are 4 mm thick and therefore it`s very hard to braid the wires by hand.
Once that is done, I tap the braided brass wires together at all the joints and edges so the wires come together. I cut the ends of the wires to fit the length when I have to shape the bracelet. I will use the cut ends later - so I will save them. I heat the Cuff then the brass will be more soften, so I can bend it later into the right shape.
When the Brass Cuff Bracelet has been heated, some of the wire surface burns black and to remove this, I deacidify it in a mixture of 3% nitrous oxide and white household vinegar. It is massive how strong foam development occurs during that process - it bubbles all over the place - I made sure to have really good ventilation in my workshop at the time.
When the Cuff is finished de-aciding, I sand it, so that the design fits and then I start to bend it. It's a very hard and solid brass bracelet, so I have to use the vise and a small arm bolt to tap it into the right shape. Beforehand, I screw a tension band at each end of the bracelet, so the wires do not become loose during the shaping process.
There needs to be a nice finish to the bracelet, so I cut 2 pieces of a brass tube, which I heat up and tap into an oval shape. Afterwards I grind both ends on the Cuff Bracelet, so that they fit the oval Brass ends. I then take 2 of the cutted wire ends from the previous process, heat them up and pound them flat so I can use them as a nice finish on the oval brass tube ends.
The 2 flattened wire ends, I choose to metal glue on the oval brass tube pieces, because a brass soldering will mean that I have to have the bracelet for deacidification again, and I would like to avoid that.
Then I take 1 of the wire ends and tap flat and scratch "Carpe Diem" on them.
These small plate is in memory of my recently deceased father, who was a very skilled craftsman and who had a long and good life. I put the 2 words in the middle of the Cuff ends.
Then I fine grind and polish the Brass Cuff so that it appears as shiny as gold. I am very satisfied with the result - a massive and very beautiful cuff Bracelet for the masculine man.
