What goes into creating a hit song? Are there formulas or tricks that will help you craft the next #1 smash? David Pogue talks with Neil Sedaka, Ashford & Simpson's Valerie Simpson, and author John Seabrook ("The Song Machine") about the genius of pop songs, and then collaborates with producer Oak Felder on a song that undoubtedly will be the Next Big Hit.

This is everything. It encapsulates the art and function of songwriting/producing which is hard to do in one space. Thanks for making my day with this feature.

Totally. Something has gone horribly wrong: where are the “songs”? Some of the new is clever but most lack soul and flair, sorry.

Notice Pharrell is the only guy who wrote and produced his own hit! I had a guy ask me to make whole album of songs like “Happy” one time. Hahaha let me get right on that.

Can someone ask the biggest pop producer Max Martin, infact not a producer but a machine, can someone catch that man and squeeze and extract his all his hit making juices that makes us additive all the times.

You can tell how much there is this force in the industry to cancel Michael Jackson, consider his legacy of creating hits that span the globe. Michael’s ability to create infections music speaks for itself and no one took moment to acknowledge that.

Sorry but that documentary properly changed a lot of perceptions of him. Some of us believed in the early 90s anyway. I still love his music but I hear it differently now.

DigitalPunk Diva Quincy produced, he hardly wrote any songs for Michael. Also, if you are gonna point out Quincy as being influential, then might as well point out others like Rod Temperton too.

there's truth to that, but it's an oversimplification; you still have to have a product... otherwise the lawyers and the accountants would make the music and take/keep _all_ the money...

I need an edge to get off this ledge. Get me some tools to track. Come on --- someone get my back. Gift me a lift --- I'm a thummin' a ride on an electric cebral ride --- can't let it slide any longer --- my love for music is much stronger - then it was when I was young. kbm

Would the formula songs be hits without the videos ? Will they still stand years from now or are they just flavor of the day? Corporate overkill / this Will be a hit aimed at target audience. Oh well Good is what you like. Bad , not so much. Keep on keepin on !

First buy a guitar, then start practicing, including hours of pain while you develop calluses, become real good, then watch people make hit songs on a computer.

Can you make a hit song on a computer? No. Why? Because it requires hours of practice and skill, just like your instrument. Just because you've chosen an instrument that hurts your fingers doesn't make you any more of a musician.

So you want to be a rock n roll star Then listen now to what I say Just get an electric guitar And take some time to learn how to play..... There’s an entire segment of people out there who have no idea what I just said, yet consume the garbage this “producer” pumps out of his computer on a daily basis.

Joe what are you talking about. Instruments are crazy important and people should play them, but you obviously don’t know what producing is if you’re talking like this. Music wouldn’t exist without producing and it takes incredible talent to produce

@@joe6096 ah ! I see you mentioned the legend... that still does not prove the point. producers back then were limited by the technology compared to this day and age its simply quite impractical... I could give you a list of modern day producer names who are legends but it does not really prove a point now does it? It's like there are people who sit and write down their ideas and then bring it to life in a DAW its quite simply the new industry standards even professional studios which use to have only analog gear are using hybrid setups between digital and analog. Sorry for any typos I couldn't possibly be bothered to correct them.

It is easy... make a good beat.. rappers dont even rap anymore, kids just like the beats and repeating popular slang words for party stuff, like sunshine in my pocket ..that is used a dozen times, thats slang for aka drugs.. i got that fire, is another... fire,thats weed, fire is slang, it means weed you dunces. Awards show win usually is not a hit talent, those are people who paid for fame.. lizzo, billie girl, gaga.. they are not talented clearly, no debate..its fake inspirational people not talented.. disney and hollywood pays to make them cult in the radio by blasting the people as popular.. mp3 downloads can be faked also. It is all for fake positivity

derty QWERTY a 1. You make literally no sense 2. Lizzo, Billie Eilish, and Lady Gaga are all extremely talented 3. You make everything to be bad when not everything is 4. It’s not easy to make beats 5. It’s even harder to produce

Oak Felder uses technology to so-called "produce", it's not him. I doubt that if you took his technology away, sat him down at a piano, he would be able to come up with a "hit."
@chrichrig
@chrichrig 4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, interesting. There's really no difference between a physical and electronic piano other than one is real and one is embedded in a computer. The technology has nothing to do with whether or not the song will be a hit.
