Making a Joiner's Mallet ver.2 with Hand Tools

Күн бұрынI wanted to try my new checkering tool set so I quickly made a new joiner's mallet. I know I failed making the checkering patterns on the handle but it was a good experience and now I want to do better!

I like your style of videos quite well. Can't speak for the others but I find the video is clear and well paced and the voice over describes your work well. I found that it depends on the work as to whether I prefer an angled or square mallet. Angled for close in work where I'm tapping the ends of chisels or gouges. Square for more open work or persuading joints to go together. Wood workers do not live by only one mallet.... :D

Thank you for sharing your opinion! I actually sensed that my videos kind of get to be like "Please look what I made!" rather than I share the information that I found useful from a project. On top of it, now I'm getting scared to say stupid jokes. Maybe I need to spend a little more time on composing videos so I can entertain my friends more!

@@YRTi A joke is great slipped in here and there. Even a good "groaner" will get a chuckle while responding with a groan! Some slight extra focus on technique would not hurt. But as a hobby wood worker myself I find that you give a pretty good rundown on the "how" of it already. But I'm only one subscriber that happens to enjoy your balanced presentation. Hopefully you get some ideas from the others too.

Do I love this project? YESSSSS!!! The first mallet was really nice but I really like the design of the second one. It looks like it could be used for timber framing. I'm surprised it is lighter than the other one. The square head is what you think you would need for harder woods. Excellent job...

Thank you. For a small project, I think walnut is good but if you need one to pound harder, maple has good density/weight so I think it’s better. Anyways, now I want 5-10lb white oak one just like a Japanese timber framing Kakeya! Haha

It seems like people originally call a big one Kakeya but now there are small ones, too (at least I see many brands sell a small kakaya on Amazon JP). I don't know, maybe I guess it's about the style? FYI, the general term of the wooden mallet is Kizuchi.

Thank you for finding me here, haha! Yeah, the checkering was good enough considering my woodworking level but the mallet turned out to be nicer than I expected so I ended up removing it. Hope you enjoy my other videos, too:)

Nicely done. I agree, I've had both angled and flat faces mallets, and I find I generally prefer flat for what I do. Good luck on the Rockler challenge! When you are mentioning it was too hot and your phone overheated, I chuckled because it was probably in the 30s or 40s here lol

Oh 30 - 40!? Well, I just finished the voice and video but the mallet was actually built in the mid OCT, haha. Things are getting busy now but I want to keep woodworking:)

@@YRTi you'll also have to eventually replace the leather if you use it a bunch. You could replace it with plastic, rubber, rawhide, etc. again, great looking tool

The checkering takes time to prefect and I do it on turned pieces sometimes

@@YRTi maybe try making a youtube shorts, or some shorter IG videos to drum up some interest. If you know a "satisfying" trick, or just something that touches on the whole ASMR thing (what I just call satisfying woodworking) I hope you can gather up some views. I wish you the best of luck :D
