Making A Knife From Pruning Shears

The Small Workshop

I bet every man that ever held some pruning shears imagined them as a knife. I know I did! That's why, when we broke the handle on ours I decided to make a knife out of them.
The blade was of decent quality and basically it was designed to cut wood, so it should make a great shop knife. The chisel grind will prove useful while tracing a line after a straight edge and also should allow for more precise chip carving because of the zero angle on one side.
Since the "tang" is so short I doubled the handle with aluminum and also used the large hole as an oversized pin to take the pressure while chip carving. It's also great for hanging the knife tip up on the pegboard so it's easy to grab while working.
The wood scales are made from an olive wood cutting board that was thrown away since it's full of cracks. Since this is a shop project I saved the nice figured wood for better things and used the dull part on the side. The only fancy detail is that I tried to take advantage of the natural curvature of the wood to match the handle.

@@sakuraogami6885 It's not wrong, just not a great tool for knife making in general, because most functions u need for knife making can be achieved (even with better efficiency) using more compact, more simple and safer tools. Table saw is dangerous, uses lots of power, makes lots of noise, inconvenient to use, not too precise, making it one of the tools that should only be used when there is no other feasible option

when drilling the aluminum with the blade attached, you should put some sort of stop at either end of the knife, that way if the drill bit were to catch the material and swing it around, the blade would hit the stop, instead of swinging full circle and cutting your fingers off

seems like the bolt that was holding the aluminum to the blade acted as a stop against the wood though,, nice knife

Yes, in this case the bolts were used as stops while drilling. Sometimes I use the small vice clamped on the drill press table to act as a stop. Thanks for the tip tho, safety is always important!
@captainover-tighten6729
@captainover-tighten6729 5 жыл бұрын
No, the bolts not doing anything, and even if the knife was attached to the wood block, it’s not held down either - please use a vice or clamp to deck. It clamp a piece of wood as a stop on back side of bit. Like a 2x4. Love the projects - but when you use the drill press I cringe!

Projects like this was where it all began for me, a few years ago I made my first few knives out of old sheer blades, files and other general tools. I actually really like some of the steel used by garden tool manufacturers, I remember I think it might have been the 4th or 5th knife I made (can't remember) and it was an old extendable garden scissors, you know the long pruning sheers that are used to cut large bushes. And I have no idea what steel it was, but it was brilliant for a knife and ended up being one of the strongest edge retention blades I ever made. I even prefer it to some of the new better knives I make, don't know where I left it though probably rotting in a toolbox somewhere. Great video.

People who don't do any wood working would probably look at a piece of wood like that as clutter and want to get rid of it. Same reason why there are people who burn beautiful hardwoods as firewood. Luckily they're usually willing to part with the pieces for almost nothing (sometimes free if you're lucky), because to them it's nothing more than firewood
