Making a Knife out of an old Farriers Rasp

I found a couple of old Farriers rasps (used to file down horse hooves) at a local junk yard and decided to make a knife out of one of them. I started off by heating them up to anneal them to make it easier to work. Then I did a couple of tests for heat treating and found that the steel needed to be quenched in water instead of oil to harden.
I'm really happy with how this turned out!

Could I please ask ,I'm trying to do this but all I have is fire and a circular woolshead sander ,I can quench my blade ok ...I'm just wondering do you think to temper it I could put it on the outside of the fire where it will heat up but not to glowing do you think that would work ? I made a blade quenched it but didn't temper it and it broke

Well, that is a really graphically clear video. I have a couple of the rasps and maybe I'll try it. I see about the torch below----what the heck is that band grinder that can do steel and still do wood?? (I favor Guilds, myself!)

Had in my possession a well worn Nicolson rasp, me thinking what a great blade that Will make. Get the fire going, heat her up, pound and shape, pound and shape, file and shape. At this point I’m very happy with this blade. Heat her up to a nice bright orange, watch the colors run just right and into the water she go’s. My intention was to quench about a quarter of the edge but a brain fart occurs and the whole thing goes in. Now the Arkansas is put too work, good grief what an edge!! Then I dropped it.

I was showing my rasp file dagger to a machinist. Before grinding, I thought I did a good annealing. He did a file test and said I should anneal it and not quench it. The file is already so hard, quenching it will only make it brittle…Thanks for any input

It’s heat treating. I anneal the file by heating it up and letting it cool slowly, which makes it softer. Then after I have mostly shaped it I heat it up and quench it which hardens the steel. Then I temper it in the oven so it isn’t so hard that it’s brittle.

Bruce Jolly we don’t have harbour freight in New Zealand sorry, this is sold as a garden blowtorch for removing weeds etc! Hope that helps

Gerardo Garza I first annealed it to make the steel softer and easier to cut and grind away and then hardened it after the bulk of material had been removed. I could’ve easily ruined the heat treat of the file when grinding (which could heat the steel up to much) anyway so I figured I might as well anneal it and work with softer steel

Great video. I have a pile of old rasps I want to make seaxs out of. I do have a question. It looks like you quenched the blade which makes it hard, then put it in an oven to anneal it which makes it soft. Why do you do this? (yours isn't the only video I've seen this done)

You might want to google heat treating steel but the basic is that if you quench something properly it’s as hard as steel can get, but with that hardness comes brittleness, you don’t want your knife snapping or shattering if you drop it so you need to temper it back to a good compromise between super hard and resistance to shattering

kaskallokan ka cadela e miña after quenching it in water I tempered it in the oven, some steels need water quenching. It’s very common.

dear Sr. David Parker! en su country no sé.pero en el mio el temple se hace en un líquido: agua para aceros de bajo carbono (ferrallas.herraduras.etc) y aceite para aceros al alto carbono (limas escufinas.ballestas.espring coil etc) y con posterioridad se hace el revenido.éste si que se hace en un oven.

Ken Funke this was my first time quenching in water so I was quite worried but I think I left it thick enough to avoid it. It wouldn’t harden properly in oil.

@@DavidParker Thanks for the reply. I have had problems quenching in oil also with blades not hardening enough. My test pieces, although hard enough, warped in water so I was just wandering.

No idea, I’m not a metallurgist. I’d recommend buying a steel that you know what it’s composed of such as d2. But some of these old rasps are made of good steel and it’s a fun way to reuse them.
