Making a Bushcraft Knife: The Woodlore Clone
I’m super excited to have been able to spend a few days in the shop making this Bushcraft knife. This knife is a clone of Ray Mears’ design for the best all around bushcraft knife, the Woodlore. It’s made from 1/8” think O1 steel, black and “white” acrylic liners with Black walnut scales. The handle is fixed with 1/4” brass pins and lanyard tube. The handle is shaped coke bottle style, and the blade is Scandinavian ground. The over all length is 8 1/4” with a 4 1/2”handle. this knife will be my new go-to, and I will be using this as my personal bushcraft knife for the foreseeable future, that’s how happy I am with its outcome.

Some people live in a throwaway culture, and the thought of making and refurbishing tools is an anathema to them. I love this channel, and have tried many of the projects myself in an attempt to learn new skills.

Shoutout to Devon, the camera man. Most uTube videos, even the very good ones are shot with one camera on a tripod. If you are alone in your workshop what else can you do? That’s obviously not what we are dealing with here. The shots follow the action. Clearly there is someone who knows what he (and you ) are doing. I’ve been around photography for a long time. You can sometimes get a lucky photo. Right place, right time. But, nobody gets a lucky movie. It’s clear you put in a ton of time to deliver high quality content. Right on.

Everything is so right about this knife .. the size ...the shape...the looks ....the contours.. the quality of craftsmanship that you put in it..the liners ..the walnut....I could go on and on..... I want one just like it.... And the sheath you made for it in the other video was just as awesome...

love that you're using accessable tools like harbor freight stuff, many many channels use a $3000 grinder to make a $50 knife. Bravo!

I'd buy two more HF buffers and maybe a vise because those are hard to screw up. There's lots and lots of things that nobody should buy there - hit up flea markets or used tool shops instead and fix up an older tool of quality. Buy NOTHING from HF that uses brushes (ie; universal motors), fluids, batteries, or consumables. Don't even think of buying a machine tool, welder, or similar there. It will seem like a deal at first, but it will let you down sooner or later and you will regret it. Thus spake the bitter voice of experience. Used tools rock.

bit late at catching this video but your right those are fantastic little magnets. but you shouldn't go side to side on the quench keep it moving front to back along the length of the blade . going side to side can introduce a warp

I've commented on this before, and I'll say it again: your camera person is OUTSTANDING! They have a great eye for the kinds of shots that keep the viewer's interest... I WISH I had someone like that to help me take my channel to that level of production! On another note, I need to modify the table on my 1 inch belt sander like you did- I keep my table level and adjust the angle of my jig right now, but I think I'll get more consistent results doing it your way. Great video!

I am not sure if your channel is created just for Subs and likes but I find great pleasure and watching your videos and cannot help but notice that you are using a lot of Harbor Freight equipment which is how many of us have started out.. When I began playing around with knives I searched for many videos on how to use and modify this equipment ... you have created some masterpieces with it and I wish your videos had been around back then ... anyway I would love to see a video of you doing a shop tour and any tips you may have with your 1X 30 and your combo sander and any other tools that you use as I believe you could get more views if you had some of these tools mentioned in a video title as not everybody can afford the higher-end equipment ... very inspiring and I am proud to be a subscriber to this incredible Channel

When you are drilling through thin plate, it can screw its self up the spinning drill. Now you have a spinning knife, looking for some fresh meat to cut. A safer way is to clamp a piece of flat mild steel in the drill vise, and then clamp the blade to that block. This eliminates the jump as the drill pulls itself through the plate. I have survived fifty years of work as a toolmaker with no more than eight stitches at one time, but I never went back for seconds on any single mistake. The Red Cross needs your blood before it hits the shop floor. That is a very nice project. O1 is a great steel for lots of knife work projects.

Just one suggestion, when your open the valve for any type of compressed gas bottle that is a combustible gas only open 1/2 turn. Your will have plenty of supply and if anything in the pipe system starts to leak it is must faster to shut everything down in an emergency. My old welding instructor was a fanatic about that.

Your instructor was a fanatic that did not the school shop burned to the ground. You and I are here because of good teachers. Another point for everyone to understand is that propane is heavier than air. You can have a leak that your nose can’t smell. If it builds up to the level of a water heater or furnace pilot, BOOM! A man in my area was returning a propane grill to a friend’s house. There was a leak. He lit a cigarette and blew his van to the junkyard.
